The way Mack was looking at her caused a twist of pain in Kira's chest. She knew what he was doing. He was sizing her up, trying to decide if he could trust her, to meet her all alone when no one knew exactly where he was. Or at least that's what she'd be doing if she were in his position.
In a way, she was right. Mack didn't know much about what had been happening with Kira, but he knew enough. She'd been having some rough times lately, even before the Apocalypse hit. Her boyfriend, who he knew she must love very deeply, had cheated on her with a woman who she obviously didn't care for. To tell the truth, he wasn't all that sure what to think of Charlie, either. She had betrayed Earth and obviously thought herself better than the others just because of her former position at S.P.D. Even if she turned out to be trustworthy, Mack didn't like her supremacist attitude one bit.
"So..." Kira started, trying to keep from looking as nervous and ashamed as she felt. "Is this the part where you try to piss me off and see if I come at you?"
Mack almost laughed at that. Almost. He set the box he carried on a nearby table. It contained all of Kira's non-Ranger weaponry, which from what he could tell were all knives aside from the stakes, including her Miracle Blade set and several sets of daggers. What she needed it all for was beyond him, but she'd mentioned living with demon hunters. Maybe that had something to do with it.
"I think after all you've been through, you deserve more than that." He held out her silver cuff, the one that held her yellow Dino Gem and transformed into her morpher when she called for it. "If you trust you, I trust you."
She was surprised at how easy this was. Not interrogation, no test, he just handed them over, just like that. She look the cuff, looking at it for a few moments before looking back at him. "Are you sure?"
Mack nodded with a small little grin. "I know you well enough to know you wouldn't ask unless you were sure."
She looked back at her cuff before putting it on her wrist again. It almost brought a smile to her face. She would make Jo, wherever she was, proud of her.
"So, what's this I hear about you and Dawn?"
Mack's eyes darted to the side. He and Dawn? Who was spreading rumors about him? "Uh...nothing. It's nothing." He started toward the door, quickly thinking of a way to excuse himself. "Hey, I should go. I promised Kat I would help her with something."
Kira actually grinned a little as she watched him go out the door. Buffy was going to be giving him some trouble, but his crush was just too cute.
