WHO: Annie Wheaton, Kathy McAvera, appearances by Anakin and Padmé Skywalker
WHAT: Saying goodbye.
WHEN: Late evening
WHERE: The Sanctuary
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress
WARNINGS: CHARACTER DEATH
It wasn't going to be long now, Padmé thought. Annie's health had been declining at an alarming rate, especially this past week, and it wouldn't be long now before the girl was gone. It was such a heartbreaking thought, yet it was reality and she had to face it, as terrible as it may be.
She was, though, in her own way. She hadn't left Annie alone for the last few days. If she wasn't sitting with the girl, then Anakin was. If not him, then Kathy. Even Threepio had been at her bedside. Anything to keep her happy. Anything to ensure she wasn't alone.
Right now, Kathy was in the room. She, too, had been ill although her illness was different. She'd become sickly. Annie... she was starving to death. Nothing was giving her the nutrients she needed to live. Nothing was keeping the weight from simply falling off of her. It was a horrible thing to witness, watching her cheeks cave in. Her stomach follow suit. Able to count her ribs without effort.
She was too weak to get out of bed, now. She could manage sitting up, from time to time, but the past six hours or so she hadn't even done that much. She'd mostly been asleep when Padmé was in the room, but as the woman glanced up from her magazine across the room she realized Annie was awake now. Awake, and staring solomnly at Kathy with large, brown eyes that looked simply haunted with hunger.
Rising silently to her feet, she cleared her throat and looked at the tiny Irish girl holding vigil beside the bed. "I'm going to check on the other children. I'll be back in a few moments," she stated, then exited the room.
Some people might think it wrong of her to allow Kathy to be there, with Annie so close to perishing. She didn't think that was the case, though. The little girl had been through a lot in her short lifetime, and if she wanted to say goodbye to a friend at that pivotal moment between life and death, if she wanted to see it through with her own two eyes... well, Padmé was hardly going to begrudge her the request.
