He let his hands drop from his face as he shook his head lightly as words failed him. One part of him wanted to back away from her, another part longed to collapse into her arms in floods of tears, but instead he was suspended between the two in complete inaction.
"I..." he started, shaking his head as his eyes filled with tears. "Oh God, I'm sorry... I can't..." he stuttered, unable to get the words out. "Come here..." he requested, motioning for her to come closer even as he stepped toward her and took her hand in his, moving it slowly, hesitantly toward his temple. He'd always hated letting someone just poke through his memories, put in this case it was the lesser of two evils. His words could never fully explain what had happened.
"I'm so sorry..." he repeated, a couple of tears making an escape down his cheek as he closed the space between them and pushed, with a great deal of effort, the memories of the war to the front of his mind.
