She was drifting in and out of consciousness by now, sometimes knowing what was going on around her and sometimes not. She'd somehow managed to move onto her back once again, her heavy eyes staring up at the ceiling during the few seconds every so often that they were open. She heard Nick and Joe's voices. She heard the words 'fine' and 'hospital' and 'ambulance.' It scared her, but she couldn't properly show it. She could barely move, and she certainly couldn't talk. When she tried, all she could really do was mumble incoherently.
Feeling Nick's hand wrapping around her own, her eyelids fluttered open and she forced herself to build up the energy to glance over at him. Her own hand was limp within his own, but she was able to give it a slight squeeze. That was all, but it was something. She wanted to reassure him, but she also wanted to reassure herself at the same time. She was petrified, but she wasn't alone.
Then there was a chilly feeling against her face, and she slowly dragged her gaze over to Joe. It was only another second before her eyes drooped shut again, but she hoped he saw the gratitude in them before that.
