Convincing James that, for the moment, splitting up to use both their Patronuses to search for Harry was the best plan had been almost impossible once they had learned they were in an American Muggle city in the future, but it had been necessary. The city was huge and if they hoped to find their son, they needed to cover more ground. She had done it, with a great deal of rationalization, cajoling and even tears, and though he hadn't been happy, they had agreed to part briefly. For Harry's sake.
Those details – half a world away, over twenty years in the future – weren't ones she could focus on right now, even though she couldn't walk for long without having a moment of confusion and worry. She had to concentrate on her search. Harry was alive, a gut-level maternal instinct said he was, but she had no idea if he was truly here or not.
And so she followed her Patronus through the streets, unaware of the dangers that lurked in the night in this city and uncaring if Muggles spotted the ethereal animal, as it was a price she would pay to find her child. The progress was slow and the longer it took, the greater Lily's anxiety and fear grew to be.
Finally, the doe stopped, her head sharply raised as if testing the air, and then she turned and bounded around a corner, out of Lily's sight. Without hesitating, Lily took off at a run after it.
