"I'm okay," Kathy told Sarah, though it was and obvious effort to be brave at a time when that much was necessary. She toyed with the fabric of the blanket, finding comfort in the soft material. As she spoke, the emotion in her voice brought forth a little of the Irish lilt that had nearly faded out entirely. "I just wish...if I'd never gone with that man who pretended to be my brother...then he'd never've had to come for me...an' Liam--Angel--would be safe an' Cordelia would be safe, too."
The little girl felt responsibility. The way she saw it, that one moment of poor judgment, that one error had set the chain of events into action. Maybe she could even go further as to say that it would have been better for everyone if the law firm had just left her in peace.
When Sarah's hand touched her shoulder, Kathy allowed herself to rest her head against the other woman's shoulder, thoroughly mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted. "I know." And she tried her hardest to believe it, too. "I just wish there was some way I could take it all back."
