"Al..." Sam was getting impatient. And that was uncommon for him. He was usually so calm and composed. But seeing an android wandering around the streets of the year 2005 was going a little too far. "I know my mind has been swiss-cheesed for a good number of years, but I'm pretty sure we don't have androids in the future."
"Heh. Well, who knows what they can come up with, right?" Al smacked the handlink. It bleeped. "Oh, this is interesting, Sam. Ziggy calculates a 96.4% chance that if you either go to the Riverside Shelter or seek out this Obi-Wan Kebab-- er, whatever his name is, that you'll be able to get Douglas a job at the shelter. So you should be pretty much done here, I think!"
Sam didn't want to be patronizing, especially to his best friend, but he wasn't convinced.
"Then why haven't I leaped?"
"Er, well, give me a second on that..."
Sam sighed and looked back over at Annie. He was tired, but at least this leap wasn't so bad. It seemed pretty straightforward for once.
"You live here?" He asked. "In the hotel?"
He hadn't given the hotel much consideration until that moment. It looked like a nice place. And if Annie lived there then he had to assume it was good and safe, because that was the kind of impression she gave. And he usually wasn't wrong when it came to judging people's goodness.
"Maybe someday I'll get to come back here and see you again, Anni--"
"Whoa, whoa, Sam. This is weird. Really weird."
"What is it?"
"I don't know! Ziggy's suddenly going haywire. Reminds me of my third, fourth, no, third wife. She had this crazy way of just losing her mind whenever--"
"Al."
"Right. Well, according to Ziggy, and man, these odds are astronomical. According to her calculations, there's a 99.98% that you're going to run into Annie again. In fact, Ziggy calculates that there's a 89.6% chance that you're going to run into her multiple times in the future."
"Al, how is that possible? When I leap out of here I'll leap into another time and another place. That doesn't make any sense."
"Yeah, but neither does this place! There's something wrong about this city. Something about a temporal flux or quantum fl-- Oh, I never did understand all this mumbo-jumbo. But you're not the only time traveler here, Sam! In fact, there's a lot more!"
Sam looked back at Annie. He wished he could understand her better. Did she know what was going on? Maybe she could explain this to him. It would be nice to get a clear answer from someone for once.
