It would figure the first time Claire attempted to go out for a short while on her own, to stretch this new independence further than she had yet, she would get herself lost. She had been doing well and had managed to find her way back along the streets from the closest store, right until she'd taken a different turn to avoid a group of rowdy teenagers and gotten herself turned around.
Stubbornly, she wanted to figure it out and find her way back herself, rather than call for Peter or call Sarah and ask for the directions. She'd stayed close to Peter or Sarah since arriving here, with a few exceptions, working on her hesitancy with doing as she wanted, her plans sounding like requests each time instead of simply informing someone what she intended to do. Being free to be herself and do as she wished was still an enormous thing to adjust to after five years that lacked all of that. But, she was an adult, it was time to finally get to be one completely instead of stuck forever in some weird place in between.
She wasn't due for another check in yet and she thought she had time before the sun set or the ice cream melted, though it would soon prove to be the former long before the latter. Knowing she couldn't be that far off, she retraced her steps, arriving back at the original turn just as dusk set in. The group of teenagers were gone and she wasn't bothered by the dark or what was in it – her concern was only that it would worry the others if she was out alone in it too long.
