"I do absorb them," Peter explained, adding to Nathan's support of him, "but at a closer range. That's why I'm trying to stay back."
Too late, was his reply to Nathan, before he could stop it. It was much easier to hold one's tongue than hold one's thoughts. It was there, he had it, Peter could tell, but moving closer would make it active. If he could stay away a bit longer, he could force it down, deep into that well in his mind.
He did relax a bit as Sarah settled against him, slipping his hand into hers.
I'm alright, Nate. I just need to keep back for a bit longer. Though the thought of escaping now did seem like a good idea, it just didn't seem right.
