“Nope, you’re not.” It was all he could say before he saw one of them lunge at the would-be-meal from the corner of his eye. The woman’s scream pierced the night and his pulse quickened, his heart sped up and Chris was eager and inflamed at the same time. Fighting was one of those usually forbidden activities. It was something that he was only allowed to do if it was needed and there was nothing else to turn to. He play sparred with Clark in the fields when nobody but Lois was around to see them and Kara had once let him go with her to take care of a problem in Metropolis when his dad was away doing something else. His mom hadn’t been pleased with her for letting him play hero for a day and his dad had told Kara not to do it again unless they said it was okay.
He wasn’t a little kid anymore and he wanted to do what his dad did. He could have joined the Teen Titans. Diana had recommended it to both of his parents. He was certainly old enough now. They didn’t agree. They said he wasn’t ready. He was still too young. Even Bruce Wayne thought he could do it and if Bruce thought so Chris thought that Clark and Lois should think so too. They didn’t. Chris had an immense amount of power, power that he could control to an extent. It wasn’t enough. He needed to control it more than that. They wanted him to come close to mastering it. It was for everyone’s well being.
When Jack pulled out the weapon and opened fire Chris made his way to the woman and the vampire who had his fingers curled around her neck. Not listening to the creatures ‘go away or take her place’ remark, he ventured dangerously close, to the disbelief of the undead. The thing was ready to say something else but never got around to it. Steadily he took the back of it’s neck and yanked. His fingers tightened and under the pressure bones shattered, muscle collapsed and dust broke out and fell all around him in a fine layer that sunk to the ground. She was breathing hard and staring. She was grateful to be alive. She had not wanted to die. Nobody wanted to die.
“You should get out of here. Now.” He supervised her getting into the car and turned back to the fight at hand when he heard the engine start. Seeing the last two moving closer to the man with the laser, Chris inhaled sharply and let the breath out in a cold gust of wind that tore through the air and caught them straight on. The temperature attached itself to them and froze their bodies, which crumbled to the ground in shards of broken ice. He gave a haughty smirk of self satisfaction and dusted off the remainder of the filth that had marred the left arm of his orange jacket.
