"I'm gonna make damned sure she never has to again. But if I had to.. I'd let her and she knows it. Whether it be to save her life, or keep me from hurting someone."
When she smiled, Logan knew she got it. That his message was getting across loud and clear. "I've found certain people can bring that emotional part out of me. And to be balanced, sometimes you have to let it out. Or else that's when you get close to snapping. It's all about balance."
He watched the way she drank and nodded. "Hope that healing factor of yours is like mine and it takes a bit to get drunk." Okay, so Logan didn't get drunk. Period."
At the mention of Marie he smiled. "We're something closer than family and more meaningful than friends. I've saved her life twice. And whether she realizes she saved me too. She's a good kid with one of the most tender hearts I've ever come in contact with."
He puffed his cigar and sighed. "She ran away from home at about seventeen, her powers manifested. Her skin ya see, it's deadly. She can't touch without hurting or killing someone, absorbs their life force, unless you're a mutant, then she inherits your powers temporarily. Also has access to your thoughts, emotions, you get the picture."
Logan licked his lips and sipped his beer. "Used to be a loner, went from town to town doing caged bar fights. She saw me, in Laughlin City. After a fight that I took a damn good beating from and didn't have any evidence I'd had my ass kicked the guy approached me and it went downhill from there. She snuck in the trailer of my truck, I found her. Not long after we were attacked, I was knocked out in the process."
"We were rescued though, taken to a safe place, a school for people like us. Have these nightmares, glimpses of how I got the metal. Don't really remember it except for what I see in these dreams. She heard me one night, thought she'd come down and I don't know, comfort me or somethin'." Logan shook his head. "I woke up startled.. ran her through." He remembered that night as if it were yesterday. "First time in my life I could ever remember being scared." The look on his face was a sad one and he took a long pull from his cigar.
"That was the first coma she put me in. And every day I thank whatever higher power might be listening that she did it. Otherwise had that night not happened, we wouldn't be as close as we are now. She'll always carry a piece of me inside of her."
He smiled at that remark and looked over at Faith. "Never thought I was much more than an animal, that I never deserved to be loved, or that it'd ever happen for that matter. Marie showed me how wrong I was. Love doesn't always come in the form of passion, those are fine. But real connections, those everlasting bonds that form between two people that couldn't be severed by anything. Those are the ones to hold and cherish, because they don't come along often."
"It's comforting to know, that no matter where I am, how far gone I maybe up here," He tapped the side of his head. "or how long she goes without being in contact with me, that she loves me and always will. It's a powerful medicine to swallow when someone proves you wrong. But sometimes, it's worth it."
