Heidi wasn't a fortress of moral righteousness. She had lied her share over the years, ranging all over the chart in size and importance, but on the by and large, she had stuck to honesty as being the best policy. If you didn't lie, especially about the important things, you didn't have to hide anything. After the truth about the events of the past year had been revealed, Heidi had developed an even greater reluctance to outright lying outside of absolute necessity.
Which was why the epidemic of honesty had left her feeling only the need to be more direct, and less delicate in the delivery of her opinions to others. It left her, despite the panic and klaxon that had erupted and her public clash with Nathan, feeling strangely, and strangely fittingly, calm. There was also a twinge of guilty satisfaction knowing that, for once, she couldn't be lied to, but it took a comfortable back seat to the former.
The boys were in bed, having been unnaturally quiet and compliant all day in fear that they, too, would be forced to tell the truth; a power over them that would reveal the hiding places they had found around the hotel, and whether or not they had brushed their teeth. They would no doubt puzzle out if they, too, were effected before barraging every adult with every question they could think of. Heidi had snuck a pair of Dr Pepper from her secret stash on the top shelf of the closet while they whispered under the covers, and, after kissing them both and telling them she would soon be back, made her way to the hotel lobby.
Going out after dark was something she had refrained from doing at Peter, Nathan, and her own common sense's insistance. She missed it, but it was better to feel a bit deprived than wind up being ambused by a vampire, or worse. Observing the after-hours through windows and doors was a poor substitute, but it sufficed. Setting one can aside, she popped open the other, took a sip, and watched the night-life creep by.
