"I sometimes wonder if I'm protecting Annie, or if Annie's protecting me." Rachel shook her head, gaze dropping to her wound and staying there as she admitted quietly, "When she went into that room, and the door slammed shut... I had this moment where I thought, 'This is what I've been looking for. Hoping for.'"
She cleared her throat a bit and glanced toward the gaping holes that had once been windows. Pieces of jagged glass remained, the window sill scattered with tiny shards. It was all over the carpet as well.
With a sigh, Rachel used her good hand to tuck some hair behind her ears then slowly looked back to Nathan. "And then she goes and does something like this and I wonder if allowing her to go, unchecked, in this type of environment is just begging for trouble." She gave an awkward half-shrug with her good shoulder.
