“Lex told me that you’re his wife, that you’re pregnant with his children, and that he wants you to be safe. Being out in this city isn’t exactly a nice walk down a country road on a sunny day. And don’t you think that he— as your husband— has a right to know that you his unborn babies are safe?” He held the steering wheel in a loose grip and talked to her in a cool, collected tone. Eddie leaned back, looked at her from the corner of his eye and wondered if she hadn’t wanted to marry Lex in the first place.
He didn’t know the details of their marriage, didn’t know what mutual history the two of them shared. He didn’t know about 33.1, didn’t know about what his boss enjoyed doing with people who had unordinary abilities, much like he did. Lex’s little projects— if presented to Eddie— would not be looked at with approval. To be honest, he would feel threatened by the truth, would feel like a cornered animal in the slaughterhouse, tricked into believing that he was a pet when the humans were going to cut him up in the end, just like all the other sheep in the pen.
It would not turn out well, if somebody stood him in front of reality, where he’d be able to see everything for what it had always been. Eddie had the potential to go for Lex’s throat if he was displeased with what he was really doing. Venom would slash and swipe with claws and that could not— would not— end on a favorable note. Not for Lex and not for Eddie either. They would both get hurt but he would probably take a greater fall. Lex was a powerful man. Lex could hurt him if he had a reason to.
They were getting closer. Buildings were becoming smaller, occupying less space and the trees were growing and outnumbering the signs, the advertisements that wanted you to try this or buy that.
“Are you afraid of him?” The question came out and he wasn’t sure where it had come from. It was at the back of his throat and before he could think about it, he was saying it out loud.
