The voice in his head paused Nathan, guilt welling up even more fiercely. The apologies cut into him the most, because he often felt as though he should be apologizing constantly to Peter, to try and bandage wounds he might not have inflicted himself but felt just as responsible for their existence. Hearing that 'I'm sorry, Nate' made the idea of who was right and wrong about being outside the hotel moot, at least for Nathan. And even had he been retreating to a far corner of the hotel, and not just searching for a broom, that 'come back' would have brought him straight back.
He turned, looking briefly at Peter, unable to hide the regret. No, I am. He's your best friend, don't apologize. And I'm just cleaning up the glass so no one else gets hurt.
Not that the glass had hurt anyone. The 'else' had come from his own actions. If only a broom made everything so easy to clean up.
And then there was a tug on his arm and, for the barest second after he looked down and saw it was Annie, he was afraid something he had just said to Peter had been heard and not approved of.
It was what made her next actions completely and totally surprising. He stared down dumbly at the cookie, looked up to her, looked down again and finally settled on her. He wasn't prepared for how the smile and offering made him feel, to apparently not have her angry at him anymore. Swallow hard, he bent and hugged her gently, the gesture brief and tentative. When he let go, he crouched completely and, after a moment's deliberation, broke the cookie in two and offered her half with a smile just as tentative as the hug, hoping it was not the wrong thing to do.
"I think we can all manage that, Hiro," he said quietly, though he didn't look up at the man right away, waiting on Annie's reaction. He also didn't look at Luke as he continued, though the words were now directed at him. "And the only one who upset Peter and made Annie mad was me."
