The sky had already darkened when Elaine reached the park, of course she couldn’t really see the sun setting; the drop of temperature and the sounds of animals, cars and people that could only be found during the night and she had noticed all of them. There were less children’s voices, for instance, that was a significant change from the juvenile giggles during the hours of daylight. And there were those vampires who inclined to avoid her. Probably because, for them, she would look like a walking cross; they would figure out her blood would be just about as tasty as gulping holy water.
Elaine had come to the square in the old fashioned way – using her feet to walk. It helped her with her normal façade. She sat on an empty bench, sweeping of the remnants of bread on the surface to give a late dinner dessert for the pigeons. There she waited; enjoying the breeze moving the thin branches of the trees, pretending to the outside world to be nothing but a teenage girl, wearing little make-up, a short dress, and a color-changing gemstone around her neck.
Was she late? Was she early? Elaine hardly ever thought in those terms when speaking to the Endless family or hers anymore. Everything transpired in a frightening timely fashion.
And she hated that.
