"I..." Katara paused, then sighed and slowly lowered her attention to her lap. She felt like a coward - incapable of even looking the girl in the eye as she gave her this news - but she couldn't help it. It was just so hard to say something like this. "It's about your brother."
Another pause and the waterbender summoned as much courage as she could find within herself, returning her gaze to Kathy. There was sadness in her blue eyes now that she didn't even bother trying to hide. Pain, sorrow, loss. Since learning of Angel's demise, she'd yet to really take the time to feel any of those emotions, yet they were all coming to her now in one large wave of intensity. She felt as though she might drown in them.
"Angel went to meet the man who took Cordelia away from us. He..." Her voice broke, tears blurring her vision although she refused to let them fall. "Oh, Kathy, I'm so sorry, but he didn't survive. We've just received the word."
A tear did escape then, but Katara paid it very little attention. She was still trying to hold herself together as best she could, still trying to be the adult, even though the girl was only a few years younger than she was.
