"Mom? Mom, where are you?" Madison called out. "Kaa-san?" she called again, this time in Japanese. It was cold here, she noted while hugging her arms around herself, looking around with wide and hopeful, yet slightly scared, eyes. "Kaa-san!" No answer. Where was her mother? Not five minutes ago they'd been sitting together in the car, talking and laughing. Then everything went silent before fading to black. Next thing she knew, Madison was standing in the middle of a sidewalk in some city. People looked at her as if she was the strangest thing in the world and whispered to each other in English. They probably thought she couldn't understand just because she'd spoken in Japanese before. Not true.
Scared now, Madison checked the bag she'd brought with her in the car. All of the money her mother had given her was in there as well as her videocamera, her sewing kit and her cell phone. A few other things were strewn about in the bag as well, but those didn't concern her as much. She had to find her mother or at least someone that could help her. Taking out the phone, she dialed her mother's cell phone number, waiting patiently for a ring. But there was none. No ringing or anything, but the phone itself seemed to be working fine.
Letting out a sigh, Madison tucked some hair behind her ear. Her mother had brought her to America before. She knew how things worked...at least enough not to be completely helpless. So, she tucked her phone away and started walking. This was certainly going to be an experience, especially without Sakura with her. And still she couldn't help but say quietly to herself, "I want Sakura-chan..."
