Domino was sleeping when she heard an all too familiar noise. It had been a while since she'd heard it, but the sound was not one that could be mistaken for any other. It was a whooshing noise, like a very small jet engine. The next thing she heard was someone laughing loudly, then yelling after the noise. "Slow down, Sammy! It's only mistletoe!"
Domino groaned, sitting up slowly. She didn't like these dreams. Proper dreams ended when the dreamer woke up. This was too much like being down the rabbit hole for her. Still, it was better to bear it out. X-Force's first Christmas without Cable. What a treat that had been. Domino slid out of bed, not caring if she woke Nathan up, since he was probably awake anyway. The previous night's hallucination had made her realize that carrying her gun was a bad idea. She'd had to buy a new microwave and explain to the landlord how a 'nail gun' had gone off so loudly at four am.
When she opened the bedroom door it wasn't their living room she saw. Rather it was the lounge of the old headquarters, with a large, real tree, and the cheap ornaments that you find at discount stores everywhere glittering gaudily on it.
The reason for the cheap ornaments was clear as she watched Cannonball barrel past it, knocking two of three off, Meltdown in hot pursuit. She sighed, shaking her head. She missed the kids, even if she didn't miss being their teacher. She watched Rictor explain the tree to Shatterstar, though the alien didn't seem to completely get it.
At least the couch was in the same place. She sat down softly, watching the only children she would ever mother enjoy their last Christmas together. In six months Domino would be gone, and they would break up before another four had gone by. She watched as these kids (they would always be kids to her), relaxed for the first time in a long time, reliving it again in glorious technicolor. It seemed more substantial than the night she'd spent on a mission with G.W. and a much younger Cable. She wondered if that would keep being the case.
