Sam hadn't been too sure, really, when Cas offered to pray for him. While he had always believed in some higher power, and the presence of angels in his life had confirmed that there was a god, Sam really didn't know what to believe. He hadn't actively practiced religion, hadn't prayed, for some time. But Cas had offered to pray for him and with him, and Sam had embraced the idea.
Rather than slip out unseen and send the others into a panic, he pulled Dean aside and told him he was meeting Cas. That done, he went out to meet Cas, waiting long enough that Cas would be there already. He didn't want to stand around waiting, feeling like he had some kind of bullseye on his back.
"Hey, Cas." Sam tried to appear casual, though he felt anything but relaxed. He stuffed his hands in his pockets as he walked toward Cas, and his shoulders hunched slightly. He shuffled his feet, carried himself with the air of someone depressed.
