Check-up
Characters: Dean & Terry
Setting: St. Mungo's, general care ward, around 10:30 AM, Monday Nov. 17th
Summary: Dean's been moved to general care from intensive care and gets a check-in from Terry.
Rating: Worksafe

Dean was was a very patient person, but he wasn't a very good patient. His recovery, though magically aided was not going to be an overnight process, and all he wanted to do was get back home. Though part of him knew that being home would just throw into full view the thought that he hadn't wanted to face yet. He'd been told, gently as possible, that his right hand was going to take a very long time to heal. Worse, he'd been told there was a chance he wouldn't regain the full use of it. Considering that he could hardly feel his hand at all, and his fingers didn't respond when he moved them, that fear was very very real.

His bones had grown back. It had been an excruciating process, even with the medicated potion he'd been given to sleep, and it made him wonder how Harry had borne it in fourth year. But it was all the muscle and nerve damage that was the problem. He wasn't sure if the damage to them could be repaired and from the looks of the mediwizards and witches, they weren't sure either.

Dean looked down at his carefully bandage right hand and exhaled slowly doing his best to keep back the sudden feeling of futility that overcame him. What would he do if he couldn't use his hand again? He looked up then as someone came into the room.

Dean nodded in understanding. It wasn't as though Terry was at the stage of his career where he could take off a day or two when he wanted. Not that escapism was really a solution. The real solution, in Dean's opinion, was to find this witch and stop her from hurting anyone else. Then maybe life could go back to normal. He just wished he knew who she was.

"Wonder if this same murdering witch had something to do with it. Whoever it was surely wanted to cause fear and panic, maybe even create some upheaval in the ministry I just hope they figure it out sooner rather than later. Enough people have been hurt or worse."

Dean gave Terry a wan smile. "Sorry. Not exactly the most uplifting conversation, is it?"

"Yeah, I hope they figure it out soon too. It's hard to believe it's coming from one person though, but then again, You-Know-Who was one person," he said, realizing the automatic comparison and just suddenly wishing he didn't verbalize it. "Not that she would be comparable," he added quickly.

"And don't worry about that, there have been a lot of strange and terrible things going on lately. Unless you do want to talk about something a bit more positive," Terry said with a shrug. It was admittedly difficult at the moment considering the topics of conversation.

Dean looked up at Terry with a remote and serious expression on his face. "Why wouldn't she be comparable, Terry?" You-Know-Who killed countless people over the course of decades. Look how many this witch has killed over on a few weeks. If this is really all her, she kills what, every other day? And she did what You-Know-Who couldn't: she killed Harry Potter. How is she not comparable? We need to treat her as the dangerous witch she is. Better chance of survival and catching her."

Dean sighed and shook his head. "There isn't much positive to talk about, is there? I mean yes we can focus on the fact I'm alive, which is positive. but I can't bloody well use my right hand and when I get out of her I get to help Seamus plan his mother's funeral. And her murderer - everyone's murderer - is still out there. Hang it all Terry, I can't find the positive." Dean's voice shook a little as he spoke. This wasn't like him. He hadn't sounded or felt this negative in five years. That alone scared him.

"Oh no, it's not to say that she isn't dangerous. Far from that. If we compare her to You-Know-Who, we may miss something," Terry said in response to Dean's question. "As far as we know, she's a serial killer, she doesn't have any real purpose behind her killings. Except for the nightmare memories, which we don't truly understand. And as far as we know, she hasn't amassed any sort of following that would have eyes and ears everywhere. You never know, but we haven't seen evidence of that yet." Terry wasn't going to get into the nightmare-memories that he was having, since there was already enough stuff going on in Dean's mind.

"Well, there isn't much but there's something," Terry said as evenly as possible given the circumstances. "I don't know what we could've done for Seamus if you didn't make it back alive. Just focus on getting well and being there for him. He'll need you. And you're not alone in this either."

Dean shook his head. "I don't mean it that way. You have a point but I mean..." He pursed his lips trying to word what he was trying to say. "You-Know-Who inspired so much fear, followers or not, that there was no one who would be foolish enough to underestimate him. What makes you think she doesn't have a purpose behind her killings? You don't know how she thinks or why she's doing what she does. She revels in torture, in pain, I know that firsthand, and I also know she does have a reason. She came after Seamus's mum because of that mark, those nightmares. I don't know exactly what they are to her, how she does what she does with them, but that's her reasoning. She knows who has them, somehow. Seamus's mum never told either of us she was having the nightmares, but now it's clear she was."

Dean looked away from terry then, remembering his failed efforts in the alley to save Fiona Finnigan's life. "I don't think she's amassed followers either, not to any degree like You-Know-Who did. Which is why she needs to be stopped before that can happen. Because Terry, I think she's fully capable of it."

He looked down at his right hand and unclenched his left. "I'm sorry. You're right. It is something. I'm alive. I'm alive and Seamus isn't alone. If I hadn't-" No, no sense thinking that. "Merlin, you come in to check on me and I unleash a load of depressive talk on you. How's that for a thank you?" He gave Terry a halfhearted smile.

"Well maybe not purposeless, but not as clear of a distinction or method to what has been going on. There doesn't seem to be much of a clear rationale as to why or how people had become marked. And we don't really understand what is going on beyond killing those who have nightmares or marks--is that the only purpose or is there more to it?"

"If she is that powerful, there are certainly those who would do her bidding out of fear," Terry agreed. "At least we have an idea of what she looks like now though. Something to work with. Much thanks to you and Ron."

"And don't worry, it's part of the job. I'd be more worried if you didn't say anything at all."

Dean nodded slowly. "It's extremely personal with her. Everything she does is because she wants to do it, that's the bottom line of it. She wants those memories because they're hers. She tortures because she likes it, and maybe because it also gets her information. I could...see it in her eyes. She's completely mental." But there had been something really of about her. Like she was of two minds. Her mannerisms, expression, even voice had changed at one part. It wasn't like she was imperiused exactly. It was something else.

Dean looked away for a moment. "I just hope that it gets her caught. I don't want her coming after me or Ron because we know what she looks like. I told her I'd seen her face in someone's memory, but not whose. I wouldn't tell her it was Ron's, but she might put two and two together and figure it out. I hope she doesn't. I just...want all this to be over."

He exhaled. "Well, at least I can go home soon. It's something anyway."

"They're hers?" Terry said, somewhat surprised at that thought about the memories. "Or you mean something she collects from other people since these memories aren't hers in that way? But to have made the situations in which such things were produced--she would've had to been quite mental."

"Same here. I think it would make it much easier to catch her. Well you are probably safer now in the sense that the entire wizarding world would know her face and it isn't only you and Ron that would recognize what she looks like now."

Dean rubbed his forehead trying to remember what he'd seen, what he'd gleaned from the woman. "I...I don't know for sure. I do know I watched her take a spot off Seamus's mum as she..." Dean swallowed over the word 'died' and kept going, "and put it in that box of hers. I remember her seeming reluctant to torture information out of me, screaming that she was trying to go easy on me or something...and then she just went mad. Different. The best way I could explain it is as though there was someone else in there with her. That's the one we need to worry about. That's..."

Suddenly everything fell into place at once. What Lavender had been accusing Bianca of, what the DA had mentioned about the box, about Pandora, about the nightmare memories - it all clicked. "Pandora. Pandora's in that woman's head. I don't know how, but it's her doing this. She wants her memories back. They're all memories of torture right? Pandora was probably the one doing it. She was famous for it. And somewhere her memories got free. I don't know why they attached to certain people but that's why she's hunting them down. To get them back."

Why couldn't he have figured this out sooner? And all of that didn't help because he still didn't know who the woman with the dark hair was.

Terry looked away from Dean for a moment as he spoke of Seamus' mum, knowing what he meant as he spoke, but his eyes made their way back to Dean when he mentioned the two different-seeming personalities.

"It sounds like Pandora possessed that woman. Do you think that would be possible?" He asked, as the symptoms did sound like that was the case. "As in she speaks, behaves and may even look one way at one point--and then at the next moment she becomes something else?"
