Characters: Hannah Abbott and Ernie Macmillan
Setting: Hannah's place; October 31, 01:20
Content: Worksafe. Just a bit violent though.
Summary: Another bad night.

It hadn't taken long for Ernie to drift off to sleep once he put his head down onto his pillow. It wasn't long after he'd come upstairs to Hann's place, which wasn't too long after he had left work. He was a bit worried about the festivities tomorrow, but it was in his nature to worry--that was what made him good at what he did.

At one point though, the usual non-sensical, non-memorable dreams formed into something more real. He had no idea of how he had gotten there, but he was on the ground, his breathing was rapid and hoarse, and as he struggled to get onto his feet, he noticed a spray of blood on the ground. And then it hit him, a curse from a figure in shadow in the corner of the room that had deeply gouged his flesh of his chest. "What are you--?" It became apparent then, he saw a mean-hearted smile from the corner where the witch was. He moved quickly to draw his wand with his right hand, when a curse had hit that too, and his skin was slowly flayed from this arm. His wand made a clear clatter on the cold floor. "Merlin," he gasped in a terror that wasn't usual for Ern. He had never lacked control as he had here. He saw the witch raise her wand again. He turned and tried to run in the other direction but something bit his heel so that he fell into a heap forward.

He wondered whether anyone knew where he was right now, and wondered how he had gotten here. It must've been a mission gone wrong. Maybe his squad had gone to get help--or maybe they had suffered a similar fate. For a brief moment he wondered whether Hann knew where he was, he probably wouldn't have alerted her of his fieldwork, so she wouldn't.

He looked up to see a shaded figure, a menacing grin, a raised wand. "No, no, no," he pleaded with himself, with the witch, trying to raise himself up--but dropping when another curse hit him, tearing flesh from his bones.

At Hann's mention of her mum, Ern looked at her with concern but decided against pursuing it any further. He suspected that she'd probably feel frustrated with him changing the subject once more.

"I--I'm better now that I know that it was just a dream," Ernie said, starting to feel his heart rate going down. He reached over to smooth Hannah's hair from her face with his fingers. "I just need to remember it's just a dream. It's probably something I ate, being too stressed out, or some memory from work." The latter part was something of a lie as this wasn't something he could actually say he remembered. "I'm alright though. So don't worry."

Even the most gruesome cases he had faced weren't as disturbing as this. The killing curse was typically not as gruesome as this.

Hannah could feel that he was still trembling slightly when he reached out to brush the hair away from her face. "It was more than a dream," she insisted. No regular nightmare would upset a person as much as whatever Ernie had seen in his sleep. "You used the something we ate excuse last night and you're always stressed from work." She crossed her arms and stared at him. Why wouldn't he trust her? "You are not alright," she told him point blank as she climbed out of the bed.

"I'm going to get some tea. Do you want some?" She headed out of the bedroom without another word. Her heart breaking and she didn't think she could handle being lied to anymore at the moment. She knew Ernie thought he was protecting her from things when in reality it hurt her to know he wouldn't share everything with her. Not that she thought he should, but this, whatever it was, was something important.

"I'm alright," Ernie said, after Hannah. "I probably should try to get back to sleep. I need to be up bright and early tomorrow for work. Just don't stay up too late--or worry about me. I'll be alright. It's just a dream."

He watched her as she left the room, feeling at least somewhat guilty about not telling her, but feeling terrified of what he had actually dreamt of overrid the more subtle sensation of guilt. Maybe I'll let her know if I find out a bit more about this, he thought to himself. He made a mental note to contact Pucey when he had the time to do so, and reclined back onto his pillow. He couldn't sleep though, and had taken to thinking about details of the dream...

Hannah could have smacked herself for leaving her wand on the bedside table. She really hadn't wanted a glass of tea, it had been an excuse to step away. An excuse that she'd hoped he'd have taken as an opportunity to come away from a less intimate setting where they could actually have a real conversation. However, he made it obvious that he didn't care to tell her the truth. In response she wanted to yell and scream and break things, but she wouldn't because she had no wand to cast a silencing charm and he needed to sleep.

Instead, she walked over to the couch and buried her face in one of the throw pillows and began to sob.
