MINISTRY BODY IDENTIFIED
By Betty Brathwaite
LONDON - While the Ministry of Magic remains quiet on the subject of the body found in the Department of Mysteries, a source has come forward with the name of the victim: Dmitri Zurlo.
The Zurlo name, while not common to the younger generations, is one no doubt remembered with great fear by older witches and wizards. Where You-Know-Who had Bellatrix Lestrange, Gellert Grindelwald had Pandora Zurlo, a witch of unspeakable cruelty that far surpassed anything Lestrange has ever done. For those who fell asleep in History of Magic class, Grindelwald was a dark wizard who rose to power in the 1930s and early 1940s, and according to Rita Skeeter's The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore, was a former lover of the late Headmaster, who had been forced to defeat him in 1945 for the protection of Europe.
Pandora Zurlo, as his second in command and greatest general, was personally responsible for the worst acts of cruelty during Grindelwald's rise to power. Her passion for torture bordered on obsessive, though as none of her victims ever lived to speak of their experiences, the tortures are only known through stories told by associates who spoke of them. Pandora Zurlo's whereabouts are unknown, as she seemed to have disappeared after the defeat of Grindelwald. She left behind a son, Leonid, who was but an infant at the time of her disappearance and was raised by her sister, Portia.
Portia, however, was as dark as Pandora, and Leonid was raised to be just as dark. He wed Althea Suvari at 18, a marriage that was arranged by the two families, and Dmitri was born shortly thereafter in 1964. Leonid and Althea were arrested in 1970 for performing dark magic and using Unforgivables.
Dmitri, then also raised by Portia, was predictably led into the same path. He attempted to release Grindelwald from Numengard Prison in 1991. He was extradited to Greece where he served ten years in prison before his escape in early 2002, wherein several wizards were injured in the course of his pursuit.
How Dmitri Zurlo came to be in the Ministry of Magic is still a question that remains unanswered, as is the cause of his death.
As a follow-up to yesterday's article about the strange visions and nightmares experienced by wizards and witches, the Daily Prophet has gathered information revealing that we were not the only ones who shared in the experiences. Vampires, werewolves, goblins, house-elves, and even select Muggles (who shared the commonality of regular exposure to magic either by location of their home or having family who are witches or wizards) have all reported similar nightmares and visions in the same time period as all the others.
The Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes, the department currently investigating the phenomenon, is claiming that the incidents are unique and not expected to continue. However, they have given no explanation for them, or concrete evidence that they will not be repeated.
