Theodore was probably the only one out of them all that really didn't see where the further socially awkward situation lies in this interaction. "Thank you for the invitation to such a lovely party--you're being too modest, I'm not particularly difficult to entertain," he said, returning the smile. He was far better behaved than usual, as it wasn't common for him to try to counteract anyone's self deprecation.
"My condolences for your loss though." His face sobered up for a moment when he did mention his condolences for her loss though. He couldn't quite imagine throwing or continuing with a birthday party the day after the death of his mother--and just wondered how she could handle this with such grace. He had to admit that was a bit odd, but perhaps she wasn't that close, or maybe it was just that he was a child back then.
