Who: Justin and Ernie (and other Finch-Fletchleys)
What: Breakfast at Finch-Fletchley manor after Ernie's worse-than-usual nightmare
Where: FF Manor
When: November 14, 8AM
Rating: Bad language and sexytalks (this is Justin's family)

"For the last time, Sarah, I didn't steal your lipstick," Justin replied across the table to his sister. "I know I used the last one, but I swear, nothing since. And if you accuse me one more time, I'm going to hit you with this bloody roll."

"Please, no rolls," said Catherine, Justin's sister-in-law, as she covered up her mouth. "I had a craving for them last night, and I almost burst. Justin's brother Heneage rubbed her back soothingly, but rather than concern, he merely looked down devotedly at Catherine's heavily pregnant stomach.

"I used to crave rolls with Hen," Justin's mother Margaret broke in, sounding enthusiastic despite the bags under her eyes. "With Charles it was tapioca pudding, Sarah was curry, and Justin was pumpkin anything."

Justin snorted, thinking that must have been the earliest sign that he was to be born a wizard.

"Would you like some more tea, Margaret?" the cook asked as she came by with the teapot. "You don't look like you slept well again."

"It's nothing, Mags dear. Just another nightmare."

Justin's jovial mood immediately evaporated at the reminder of his mother's 'fate'. Had Charles been at the table, rather than at his flat in London (where he stayed when Parliament was in session), he would likely have made the same complaint.

"Hey, Mags?" Justin started as the cook passed by, and attempted to think of something positive to get his mind off of things he couldn't control. "I've a friend coming for dinner in my rooms this evening. Do we have any fresh strawberries for dessert? I was thinking of that lukewarm chocolate fondue of yours for dessert."

She giggled and shook her head, sounding decades younger than her 50 years, and kissed his forehead. "Of course, dear. And don't worry about the sheets. Between you and your sister, I always make sure to have enough of that cleaner around."

Ernie had gotten back from work the morning of the 13th and had spent the better part of that day sleeping after he had put every ward that he could think of and muster in his tired state around the Finch-Fletchley manor, before just falling asleep on top of the bed with his wand under his pillow. He had awoken the next day for a few hours, and had taken to cleaning up, applying a few more wards around the manor, and promptly falling asleep at 3:00am or something like that. He was rather serious when he said that he'd spend the next few days sleeping.

It was that night or that morning that he figured that maybe sleep was somewhat overrated. He had awoken with a start, at the same point, but realized something was different. He could've sworn he felt the actual pain up until now, and could've sworn that he had tasted blood in his own mouth--but he noticed his skin was still there upon very quick inspection. Or so he saw it by the light of the blazing candles... It took him a moment though, to realize that it wasn't quite candle light, but was the chair by the door. On fire. Startling again, he murmured a water spell to extinguish the fire with a shakey jet of water dousing the flames. His mouth was dry and his throat was hoarse. He also took note of the fact that he had been gripping his wand from under the soft down pillow prior to waking up.

He stood up and took note of the glass of the bedside lamp that was shattered on the floor, and the frame of that painting of a landscape with a hunting party that was twisted. (He was glad that it wasn't magical since its inhabitants would've completely freaked out at that point.) For a moment he just stood there taking in the fullness of the destruction...it has been awhile since he has performed any unintentional magic. He sighed, feeling his breath shakily escape his lips before realizing that he was feeling lightheaded. Of course, he hasn't really eaten yesterday since he spent so much time sleeping. He found a bathrobe on the trunk at the end of his bed, and pulling that on, he pulled open the bedroom door.

The smell of food hit him immediately, as he made his way to where he heard people talking and quietly entered the room where Justin and his family sat, still feeling somewhere between numb and completely on edge despite knowing that he was as safe as safe could be right then and there...

Justin was cutting into his waffles when he saw Ernie walk in, and stopped his utensils. Mum'd had the nightmare, so Ernie had as well. He shifted his head to glare warningly at his sister, having asked her not to hit on Ernie while he was staying with them (like asking the wind not to blow).

"What'll you have, Ern? Mags can make whatever you like. Here, you want some tea, or some juice?"

"Oh?" The sound left Ernie's mouth that indicated that he was snapping back into a reality that he had abandoned for the briefest moments. His mind had drifted to the need to disclose that he had set something on fire unintentionally and probably shouldn't be hanging around too long in case something else should happen.

"Tea would be alright," he said rather quietly due to his rather hoarse throat. He walked to a seat, taking care to position himself carefully, lest he just miss and fall over and look completely undone in front of Justin's family.

Justin looked away from his best made to trade glances with Mags, who noticed everything and immediately stepped forward to fill Ernie's cup with tea. "Now you just sit yourself right down and I'll get you some eggs and toast, just how you like them." She tenderly squeezed Ernie's shoulder before heading off to the kitchen.

"Ernie, dear, you look like you slept worse than I did," Justin's mother said sympathetically. "Justin told me you were having strange dreams, like myself."

Justin closed his eyes. He didn't want to hear this or any kind of confirmation that two of the most important people in his life could die. He stuffed a forkful of waffle into his mouth, but didn't taste them at all.

"Thank you," Ernie's voice was still quiet as he sat down.

"Oh--I'm alright, thank you Mrs. Finch-Fletchley," Ernie said, not quite being direct regarding the nightmares. Just thinking about it irked him. "I guess I've been working too hard the most recent week. I'm probably just a bit behind in my sleep. That's all." And...he had managed to destroy a bit of property in the bedroom...somehow.

"I'll try to get a few more things done this afternoon and you should be good to go. I should head back to my flat this afternoon to check if everything's alright." He'd rather not have excessive amounts of unintentional magic destroying everything in the Finch-Fletchley household after all.

Justin's mother nodded regally, giving Ernie a sympathetic half-smile. "Do what you can, dear, but don't push yourself too much. And for God's sake, call me Margaret. You're practically a fourth son to me."

Justin swallowed his food quickly. "You need someone to go with you, Ern? And you're not staying there tonight, are you? I know I've got a friend coming over, but you're still fine to stay here as long as you need to. And if you need me to stay with you, I can reschedule. You're way more important, you know that."

"Of course--Mrs--I mean, Margaret," Ernie said, trying to smile back.

"It--I think the things should be cleared up and alright. I shouldn't impose for too long--it's quite alright--things will be alright--I'll be alright, and in any case, I'd need to get my act together for Monday. I appreciate it, but I'm alright." Ernie was fairly sure that there was some sort of inverse relationship beween the number of times he said he was alright and his actual level of alright-edness...

Justin only kept from growling in response to Ernie's chain of "alright"s. Normally he wouldn't have a problem getting Ernie to see sense, but he knew his friend would be severely embarassed to have that aired in front of Justin's family - and while Justin enjoyed embarassing his mates, this wasn't his preferred method.

He caught his mother's eyes and she gave him a knowing look before shifting into a look of concern.

"Well, you might be 'all right' young man, but I certainly am not. Justin has told us about what's been happening, and the idea of some witch appearing in my home to kill either me or any of my family is far too much for my aging heart to bear."

Justin almost lost composure at that. For a woman in her sixties, his mother was extremely active in every sense of the word.

"Especially since Charles should be home later today. We absolutely cannot have a Member of Parliament being at risk. I'm certain, Ernie, that your superiors would be more than pleased if you were to continue staying with us. It would save us having to go through the Prime-Minister's office to speak with that magical liaison to acquire proper protection."

Oh, Justin was this close to coming completely undone in laughter. He loved watching his mother go formal in order to get someone to do whatever she wanted. The Prime-Minister himself had been hard-pressed to say no to her when she was in such fine form.

Ernie didn't want to admit it but Mrs. Finch-Fletchley did have a point. But it wouldn't do to have the nightmares get worse and have him burn down the manor or inadvertantly hurt anyone who may be in the way. This was the first time it happened as such, but he was afraid that he'd do it again. "I can see your point, Margaret," he said, pausing for a moment before saying her first name. "There just are some other issues."

"Justin, can you come here for a moment," he said, standing up and walking back towards the room. Once out of earshot of Justin's family, he continued to speak. "I'm sure we can arrange for something different. Just since--I'm a bit worried about a different set of problems."

Justin nodded to his family as he got up to follow Ernie - ignoring the kissy face his sister made at him (she'd done that ever since she'd found out Justin's old crush on his best mate) - and listened to his friend's concern.

"What problems are you worried about? If you've a date, you can bring her here - the place is rather well soundproofed, and nobody would mind. This is my family, after all."

"No it's not that. I'm really sorry but I was going to fix it up before leaving this morning, just since it'd be a non-issue, but I think it's enough reason to make it a bad idea," Ernie said as he pushed the door to his room open to show the damage.

"I'm more afraid of what I'd do," he said. "I had absolutely no idea what I was doing last night--this all happened while I was asleep, after all. Thank goodness I didn't hurt anyone, it could've happened though."

Justin's initial reaction was to ask if Ernie'd had a party last night, but rightfully judged the timing to be rather bad for that. Instead, he put his hand on his friend's shoulder and squeezed comfortingly.

"I wouldn't worry about it, mate. You had the nightmare last night, didn't you? You can't control what happens when it upsets you. But if it'll make you feel any better, we can look up some impenetrable and fireproof charms. Anything else and I doubt it'll be any worse than what used to happen before I turned 11. And Mum wasn't kidding about considering you an extra son."

With the reassurance done, however, concern crept in. "So you've been reacting this way every time you've had the dream? I'm so sorry, mate. I should've been with you ever time."

"No, it never happened until last night," Ernie said with a sigh.

"It was much worse though last night though. Worse than ever--and I'm afraid of it being worse if the dreams get worse. The fire is troubling, but I'm afraid to think that there is a possibility that it could get worse, involving something we couldn't have fathomed or prevent."

"But you've had it several times, and it's been the same until now, right?"

The fear was creeping back again, but he fought to push it down. He had to be positive, for Ernie's sake.

"That's it, mate, you're staying here. If you're at home and something happens, you're the only one there, and I won't have you burn yourself down in your sleep. Here we've fire alarms and tons of other people in the house. Remember, you don't have to do this alone."

"It was the same this time--what happened was the same, but it was different in a way--it was worse." It was true though, Ern still had a hard time pushing it out of his head.

He considered Justin's reasoning for a moment, knowing that his friend was right. Well he wasn't going to be the only one there though either--he lived in a larger building, so he'd be the only one in a flat, but surrounded by other flats.

"Well if your mum would feel that much better about having me around, I guess I can't say no," Ernie said with a smile. "But you're right--it's not the best idea to be alone at times like these."

"Look at it this way, Ern," Justin said, sliding his arm fully over his best mate's shoulders and leading him back to the dining room. "You're going through something awful, so why shouldn't you stay someplace where your cleaning and laundry and cooking are all done for you? Mags adores you, and I promise, I'll make sure Sarah stays out of your room."

He paused. "For that matter, I'll have that little chat with Charles and Emily too when they get here."

Ernie allowed himself to be led back to the dining room, realizing once more how tired he was. He had spent the last several days with little to no sleep whether it be for work or for the dreams. And he wouldn't admit it aloud to Justin at this point but every death he read of in the paper deepened his own fear that his number would be up next...

Since he was a bit lost in thought he didn't quite hear some of what Justin said about the laundry and cooking. "Why would she want to be in my room?" He asked, quite unaware that such a factor came into play around here.

Justin shook his head, as always amazed at how a bloke who could skillfully handle bad guys on a regular basis could be so clueless when it came to women.

"One, because you're a good-looking bloke, two, because she's as big of a slut as I am, and three, because she's been dying to shag a wizard for ages now."

He tsked affectionately as they re-entered the dining room. "Ernie, luv, have I taught you nothing?"

"Oh, I bet you've taught him a thing or two, brother dear," Sarah teased from her seat, giving them a wink for good measure.

"Oh--" He said, wishing he didn't really bother to ask that question since he now felt awkward. Ernie didn't really have time to ask the other question regarding whether there was any real difference between wizards and muggle blokes when they had gotten back the dining room. Actually he was fairly sure that Justin would've answered in far more detail than he'd ever really wish to know.

He couldn't really help himself but in his own quiet ways, flush slightly at the comment and wink Sarah gave them before making his way back to his seat. "I reckon that I'll stay a bit longer, Margaret. Until the trouble has cleared up; I anticipate that it would be over soon enough since law enforcement is working overtime to solve the cases," he said, still finding it odd that Justin's mother would insist that he call her that. He was fairly certain that his parents would (if he ever really would bring his friends over to visit) insist on the more formal version...
