Entry tags:!status: complete, ^date: november 12 2003, character: anthony goldstein, character: michael corner

Characters: Michael Corner & Anthony Goldstein
Setting: Anthony's flat, 12 November 2003, 7:00pm
Rating: PG-13 for language and possible arguing
Summary: Big kid sleepover! Memory speculation, zombie invasion, muggle warning system, BFF arguing, & moaning about The Lavender Situation.

Michael was exhausted and it wasn't even really fulfilling considering that there was still a tremendous amount of work to be done in the streets of Diagon Alley and elsewhere in the Wizarding World. He'd spent most of the day at the Leaky Cauldron trying his best to keep the mindless bodies from destroying the place and whatever other nearby building he could help defend. It was grueling work, especially considering it took them ages to realise that so many of their spells weren't affecting them in any way. Michael could barely believe that just the night before he had been worried about such menial things like Lavender being in his flat and now there were mindless bodies roaming all over the place. With all the shite they already had to deal with, why would they get more added on top of it all?

Now he only wished that the situation with Lavender staying at his flat was one of his only problems. Really that problem had escalated tenfold just last night when she decided to say those words he could not handle hearing. None of it probably would have happened if he had just kept his intentions to himself but he never knew when to keep his mouth shut and leave things be. Michael was smart, but he never seemed to learn with Lavender - he was constantly tripping up because she was always throwing him for a loop.

And then there was Anthony Goldstein, his best mate he could always rely on, regardless of whether or not he said extremely stupid shite he knew he was going to regret later. Because unlike Lavender, Anthony had been with him for twelve years and knew him backward and forward even if Michael liked to pretend that he could still fool him. And even now knowing that there was a pretty good chance that Anthony was going to call him out on some of the things he'd said in the journals, Michael still wanted that comfort of being with him even if a row could be involved. Because even arguing with Anthony felt like something familiar and home to him, unlike how he had felt with Lavender invading his space the past few days and that was exactly what he needed right now. So he may not need to stay at Anthony's, but it was something he wanted to do anyway, since he wanted to consult with him about the memory obliviation idea that had crossed his mind when he was talking about the potions with Lavender. There was no one better to talk to about it with than Anthony. And of course with all the mindless bodies wandering the streets, he wanted to check in with his friend anyhow.

These were all valid reasons for him to show up at Anthony's flat around seven that evening. Rather than knock he just opened the door because it was essentially an extension of his own place in most ways and Anthony had learned to set his wards to include Michael if he did not want to deal with an incessant amount of whinging. Unlike at Michael's flat where he might actually be shagging someone, there was no need to worry about Anthony entertaining since he was still so adverse to such things. It was really rather sad and Michael had to get him a shag at some point. "Honey, I'm home! I hope you aren't wanking in here!" Michael called as he closed the door behind him and tossed his bag on the floor near the sofa.

Anthony decided to not even dignify the lie with a response, and continued to fix his notes.

"I don't know," he answered after a moment. He seriously hoped not, though, as he sincerely doubted his father needed another reason to not be all that fond of the "magic thing" as he had so eloquently put it once. Anthony could just see it now.

"As for Justin? Yeah, there's at least someone in his." Which, if it hadn't been Michael, he wouldn't have admitted such a thing to. It also helped that Michael seemed to have adopted his serious mode. "I've been looking into the idea of a protection-like charm coupled with either detecting or tracking. So I have ideas. Lots and lots of ideas of what could work if tweaked the right way..." Anthony took a spot on the sofa beside Michael, then, running a hand through his hair. "Or maybe even combining two together into something completely new."

Michael nodded at Anthony's answer. It wasn't a 'yes' but it wasn't a 'no' either. So he wasn't really sure if he should feel relieved or not. "Let me know when you find out, yeah?"

Michael rubbed his hand through his hair. "Shite," he replied. This was just what they needed. Not only themselves, but their Muggle family members were in danger now and it was like a never-ending carousel they couldn't get off of. Michael listened to Anthony's theory, nodding enthusiastically. If there was any time for experimentation, well now was it. Michael knew so himself, obviously. "Okay, that sounds good. I'm sure you will be able to come up with something, mate. Do you need me on this or are you good?" It's not as if he wouldn't want to help, but he did have a lot of shite going already and he still had his own idea to consider with Anthony which would add more on the plate. "I'll help, but I had something else in mind I wanted to run by you too so, y'know, there's more work to be done as is."

There wasn't really much he could do beside wait for his mother to find out and then notify him about it. He did hope that the answer would be no, however. Close or not, that was still his father, right? "First thing on my list." And he wasn't being sarcastic about that either.

Michael's confidence in him was good to have. Having yet to settle on an exact answer hadn't made him feel exactly hopeful. Not that he was going to give up. He highly suspected that Justin was counting on him to figure this all out. "Yeah, thanks. I think I'm good, actually. It'll be a good distraction. And I've got Justin doing stuff." Which, for the most part, seemed was going to be getting books and looking through a few as well. Not that Anthony minded. In the end, it still helped, right? And he was enthusiastic enough about it.

Marking the pages for where he last left off in both books, and then closing them both, he turned to face Michael. Frowning just slightly, he said, "Something else like what?"

Michael nodded, not really offering a smile but a tight pull of his lips. Michael may not have spent a whole lot of time with Anthony's family like he had spent with Michael's, but it didn't change the fact that he cared.

He considered things inside his head first, trying to decide how he would explain things. "So these are memories, yeah? But apparently not normal memories since Luna and I couldn't get them out like any other memory. Still, we should try and see if we can't obliviate them just in case. It would be a temporary solution, but it could help in the meantime maybe." That wasn't actually his real objective, but it was actually necessary that they try it if they hoped to consider his idea at all. "And we have you, so it would be safe to try." Obviously he couldn't guarantee that it would be safe, because they didn't know how the memory would react and seeing as these weren't normal memories, there could be other magic at work that would react negatively. "Anyway, I think we need to try that before we can really attempt my theory-"

It made sense to Anthony that Michael would come to him with this. Mostly because he happened to be an Obliviator, and obliviate was difficult to cast correctly without the proper training. There were so many ways casting a memory charm could definitely go wrong if not done right. Anthony nodded at the explanation, understanding the basic need for it.

"To try that out, though, we'd need a volunteer, right? I mean... I can't because I have to cast it." Anthony said in reply. Of course, he didn't imagine any of the DA members currently suffering would want to decline being the guinea pig, but he wouldn't exactly be surprised if any of them did. Memories, even with him casting, tricky business. And these memories that were causing all the nightmares were even trickier. "And what's your theory, pending we find out how obliviate works on the memory?"

Michael always got excited when he was talking about these sort of things. When he was considering theory and the possibilities it might bring, you could see it on his face how much he enjoyed learning and discovering things.

He nodded firmly. "Of course. I'm sure there would be plenty willing to try it, since they stepped up to take the potion." At this point he thought they'd try anything if it meant getting some relief. "Okay so here's what I was thinking. If you lot have a memory charm that works temporarily on a memory so that we could mix that magic with a potion and when you lot take that it'd get rid of the memory for the nights that they come and you'd actually be able to sleep instead of having the nightmares."

He knew it sounded fairly far-fetched and not to mention complicated, but at this point he was willing to attempt anything, no matter the complication, just to give his friends some relief. Of course there were other things they could also be working on. Like how to remove the nightmares altogether, but that was something he wasn't quite ready to get into just yet. They needed to go over that in the next meeting.

Anthony would have loved to point out that less than twenty-four hours ago, Michael had been pretty unsure about the potion's ability, but he decided that was another topic that could always come up later and instead only nodded as he took in Michael's explanation of his theory. It did sound a bit complicated, even more complicated than his other project that he'd only started the day before, but at the same time, Anthony could not do anything other but admit that he would be on board on any theory with the possible outcome of getting rid of the nightmares temporarily -- even if it was just a way to hold out for the hopefully permanent one.

"It could work. Maybe. Between the fact that there's more to messing with someone's memory than just casting an obliviate, and the fact that intent matters as well, there should be something. I mean, it would still likely be a heavy project to take on since we'd have to combine them both pretty much perfectly." Anthony finally replied. "But I don't think it's completely impossible. It's a sound theory."

Michael never really knew all the little nuances of memories - they seemed far too complicated for him to ever get involved with. So he would obviously trust Anthony's assessment of the situation when it came to this sort of thing. And obviously they were asking a lot for just a simple relief from some nightmares a few hours a night every other day but in the end it felt like it was worth it for all of them.

"Yeah, yeah." Michael lifted his right hand automatically to run it through his hair, forgetting that it was still bandaged from last night seeing as he had yet to have the time to visit a healer because of the chaos that had erupted that afternoon. It was still hurting him some, but he'd taken some pain potions that day and had some more with him in his bag. "It'll be complicated, I figured as much. But it should be worth it. I mean, if we don't know how long this is going to be, I just can't deal with you lot not sleeping. And until we know of a way to get rid of the memories besides Pandora's way, well, we've got to try something, yeah? I'll look into it more, we don't need to get started right now. I had to find out if it'd even be possible before I bothered..." Michael trailed off, looking down at the back of his bandaged hand thoughtfully.

Most magic having to deal with memories fell under charms, and if there was one thing Anthony had always excelled at without much effort in his part, it most definitely was charms. That was part of the reason for why he'd looking into becoming Obliviator after he finished at Hogwarts. It was almost as if killing two birds with one stone; he was doing something he was good at, while also doing something that fell under the category of being something he'd love.

Anthony may have been about to say something to Michael regarding when it would be a good time to work on this new idea, and possibly also mention that Anthony had never had exactly stellar sleeping habits to begin with, but he was distracted by the bandage. "What... exactly happened to your hand?" he asked then, having forgotten all about theory and temporary memory charms and the like. There was a good chance it had been caused by the chaos that was outside, but part of Anthony highly doubted it.

Michael loved to tell stories and battle wounds usually gave the best stories to tell. Unfortunately he did not have a battle wound this go round even though he'd love to say that this was how he'd got the injured hand, he was never very skilled at lying to his two best friends. It wasn't that he couldn't do it, more that he just didn't want to so if he ever even attempted it, it was always half-hearted and with the knowledge that they were going to see right through it anyhow. So Michael really had no intentions of lying to Anthony about this now, but that didn't mean he wouldn't attempt to downplay it like he did most things.

"What, this old thing? I've had it for ages," he said, like he was talking about a piece of clothing. "Besides, you should see the other bloke, he looks much worse!" Which alright, he should probably not be joking about punching people seeing as he really had just punched someone not that long ago so saying that might be actually kind of believable. He sighed and finally said, "I may have exchanged a few words last night...with the walls of my flat."

Anthony only raised an eyebrow at Michael at his first attempt to pretend as if it wasn't a big deal, leaning back against the arm of his sofa and waiting Michael out to actually tell him the truth of the situation. It was the sort of knowledge that came with years of friendship, and Anthony was pretty patient about most things.

"Well, I'm really sure they must have offended you in some way, so that's all right." It literally wasn't possible for Anthony to shove any more sarcasm into his tone than there was already. Maybe it was the fact that he had a tiny inkling of where this was going to eventually lead. Except he really, sincerely hoped not because he had had quite enough of it the first time around, thank you very much.

Michael rolled his eyes and raised his arm to shove Anthony in annoyance, but when you kept attempting to do these things with your dominant hand which was - at the present time - quite injured, it was really rather annoying to say the least. "Sod off, will you? Had I known there would be a rampaging mob of inferi at eleven I would have gone to the healers early. I got a bit busy though so I haven't had the time, thanks. Would you just look at it, you arse?"

He began to pull the bandage off of his hand. It was no longer bleeding which was good, but his hand was bruised blue and purple and he couldn't really move his fingers without pain shooting up and down his hand and wrist so he had a feeling he may have done some major damage inside that he wasn't really capable of fixing himself. "I had a rough night, alright?" Michael added unbidden, because that explained everything he needed to know.

Anthony just continued to give Michael that same look for a moment before reaching over to grab his wand from under a stack of parchment on his coffee table. "You know what I hear works best for injuries? Not getting them." Anthony then sighed when he saw the actual state of Michael's hand and gave into the sudden urge to shove him hard in the shoulder. He sort of wished Michael had been sitting somewhere higher, so that he could have pushed him on the floor.

"And, also? Rough night or not, you're an idiot. Do you know that?" He very intentionally did not ask what that meant, and instead concentrated on the best charms he knew of to fix the mess that was Michael's hand -- for a small amount of time before taking his NEWTs, he had considered the career of being a Healer and it had only made sense at the time to learn as many as he could... even if it hadn't worked out that way in the end. Michael having had a rough night would be Very Much About Lavender, and Anthony did not want to talk about Lavender because Anthony had no advise to give regarding The Lavender Situation Part II, as this was. "The next time you feel like punching a wall, throw something. That way you'll shatter something that isn't your hand."

"Oh, you're just a brilliant one, aren't you?" Michael couldn't help but respond to the sarcasm, because he felt like he was being attacked for something he could not have stopped if he tried. If Anthony had been put in his position last night, he doubted he'd have acted any better. "Oi! Cheers, mate, but I'm already injured!" Michael protested when Anthony shoved him.

Michael felt like this was an excuse for Anthony to try and make him feel worse than he already had last night and he didn't really need that. Granted he was helping him with the hand, but Merlin. "Alright, I don't think I need to be mentally bruised as well, Ant." He knew that Anthony didn't want to hear about his problems with Lavender and he didn't necessarily blame him. Michael had never really bothered Terry and Anthony with talk about birds before because he never had problems with them; mostly because he ended the relationships whenever they got difficult. So all this new drama he was experiencing with Lavender was something entirely new that neither of his friends were quite used to dealing with seeing as Michael had never stuck with anyone who caused him this much strife before. And really, he wasn't even technically with her to begin with, which was probably where half of the drama came from.

"Sorry mate, but that is generally Lavender's favourite thing to do so I try to avoid it altogether if possible. It was the better alternative to running so..." he shrugged, trailing his words off purposefully as he knew that Anthony didn't want to really hear about it anyway.

"I'm incredibly brilliant, where have you been for the past twelve years?" Anthony stated, more as a rhetorical reply than anything else. It was incredibly easy for Anthony to be the one healing a hand and passing judgment on how the injury came to be because Anthony's life didn't leave him open to very many situations with people like Michael's with Lavender. It was a blessing. A blessing that no one really understood was a blessing, but that was all right with Anthony.

Anthony only smirked a bit then, not responding to the claim of being mentally bruised as he silently worked to repair Michael's hand to top shape. Personally, he thought he could have said much worse.

"The better alternative, yeah? Better in what way, exactly?" Anthony had a very feeling that he was going to regret asking the question, but it wasn't his fault that the logic hadn't added up, was it? It was Michael's, for putting that statement in a way that required clarification, right? Right.

Michael shook his head, careful not to move his hand while Anthony was working on it. "Apparently not with any mates who are humble," he pretended to mumble, but truthfully Michael knew how smart Anthony was and he'd be one of the first to admit it to anyone but Anthony.

He shrugged his left shoulder. "I mean, technically you should be proud of me, yeah? Usually if things get intense I just run from birds. And y'know, Lav and I might not exactly be in a normal sort of...situation, but at least I stayed. I could have very well transformed and went to the forest, which believe me was what I wanted to do - or just let her leave which she had been going to do there for a bit but I didn't do either. I think that shows real maturity on my part, thank you very much." Minus the punching walls, but that couldn't have been helped; he had to release the pressure somewhere.

Anthony felt that Michael was very lucky that he only received a dark look for that remark and that Anthony wasn't the sort to shove him yet again.

"Oh, I see." Anthony stated, nodding in approval as Michael's hand started to look a bit better with his charms. "I should be proud that you chose what might have been the least dysfunctional route -- which I highly doubt, actually -- of all dysfunctional routes, even though the route you did actually take was extremely dysfunctional in itself. Right." He was sure that Michael was possibly looking for him to be more understanding of the situation, but Anthony didn't exactly have it in him. And not just because of his own lack of relationships, either. But because the entire thing didn't make sense to him.

"You know, what? I don't think I'm actually seeing it."
