Rated PG
Who: Jayne Dough and Harry Potter
What: Answering a few questions
Where: Department of Mysteries
When: October 30, 2003 - 2:55
Rating:: Worksafe

The Department had been nothing but complete and utter chaos since Jayne had gotten to work that morning. She'd spoken with most of the administrative personnel, getting people calmed down and comforting Lisa Porter, who'd taken over as Thorntwaite's assistant after Jayne's promotion.

Eventually she'd begun getting to her own work - Merlin knew the Managers had no idea what to do around the department without their assistants - and was currently sorting through the items the cleaners had dropped by her desk to be sent down to Lost and Found.

She heard some footsteps and looked up. Of course, an Auror. She sighed, having expected someone to come down at some point. In fact, she'd counseled the assistants to answer what they could, but when in doubt or if they had trouble with the Auror, to send them to Jayne. Someone had to look after them.

"Can I help you?"

The Department of Mysteries was obviously the place to start. Harry took it upon himself to start talking to some of the assistants in the department. It was unlikely they'd seen anything, but the people who handled the minutia of the day were often the ones who had a better idea of what was going on.

He was halted by a voice, one that came form a slightly older woman with dark hair and a rather business-like expression. "Possibly," Harry responded. "I'm..." he hesitated a moment, and then just forged ahead, continuing as most any Auror would. "I'm Harry Potter and I'm here to ask some questions about what's happened. May I have some of your time, please?"

If he started out politely, there was a better chance of getting polite responses back, something he noticed not all Aurors did. He supposed it didn't matter if they all got results.

Her lips twisted into something between a smirk and a frown. Harry Potter, of course. Who else would be waltzing down here?

"I was wondering when one of you would be coming down here. The name's Jayne Dough, I'm the head Admin for the Research Division, but I've worked a bit of everything down here. What do you need to know? And for the record, I was at home last night, but I don't have an alibi, unless you count my cat."

Harry blinked at her response. He seemed a bit surprised that she'd volunteered that information before he'd asked it. He took the notes down dutifully but paused at her name. "May I have the spelling of your name?" Jane Doe? That couldn't be right.

"I'll come back to your whereabouts later. Right now I'd like to ask if you know anything about the man whose body was found. Was he familiar to you? Had you seen him before at all? Is there anything you can tell me about what's happened?"

"Jayne, J-A-Y-N-E, Dough, D-O-U-G-H."

Well, at least he had the courtesy to ask. Most would simply assume her name was spelled the way they thought it should, and leave it at that, however incorrect it was.

"I don't know anything about the man himself," she replied. "I don't think I've seen him before, and I've a pretty good memory, but it's not perfect." She shrugged. "He did have Mister Thorntwaite's wand, though. Eyelop fire-called Lisa, his assistant, this morning after he woke up. He was in a panic because he thought he'd left his wand at work. She checked the security logs to see if he'd left with it, and there was a record of it being presented last night."

Harry took down the spelling, relieved it wasn't as generic as he'd thought. Still it seemed a bit unusual to actually name someone that and he wondered whether that actually was her name. That however wasn't important at the moment.

That bit of news was also very interesting, Harry thought, making note. "Lisa? What's her surname?" If she'd spoken with Thorntwaite so close in time to the incident, maybe she'd have more to say about it. "Thorntwaite didn't have a habit of leaving his wand about, did he?" He doubted it, but best to ask for confirmation.

"Her name's Lisa Porter," she repeated, slowly enough so that he could get it down.

"Actually, Mister Thorntwaite was pretty anal about having his wand on him - but then, many of us are. But especially before leaving for home, because of his condition."

She took in a deep breath in advance of the explanation. "You see, his wife was Muggleborn, and worked at the Ministry several years ago. He was forced to watch as she was tortured and Kissed that year." That was how so many of them at the Ministry thought of it, for no other single year in recent memory could bring about such deep emotions from everyone, no matter their allegiences.

"He hasn't been able to sleep a night through since, not without a potion. It keeps him sound asleep for at least 8 hours."

Harry's face took on a sympathetic expression as he jotted down Lisa's name. He'd have a chat with her next. That year. For so long as they all lived, they'd remember that year, the culmination of years, decades of terror at the hands of Voldemort. The things that went on - at Hogwarts, at the Ministry, across the country - they were terrible and he didn't want to relive them.

Perhaps he might have to, to solve this case. His mind was working quickly though. The victim likely knew Thorntwaite's habits. It would have been easy, then, to get Thorntwaite's wand, and presumably a hair to disguise himself with Polyjuice, all secure in the knowledge Thorntwaite would be asleep for hours. Perhaps he even helped that along.

"Has he been in today? Thorntwaite?" It would help even more to talk to him directly.

She shook her head. "He's still at home - doesn't leave without his wand. After what he's been through, I can't blame him."

As she spoke, she continued her previous work of slipping items that the cleaners had left into an envelope to later be dropped at Lost and Found. A quill, a scarf, two keys, a strange medallion, and a necklace.

"Is there anything else you need?"

Well that wasn't helpful, not that wasn't Jayne's fault obviously. Thorntwaite was the one who hadn't come in. Maybe Harry could speak to him at home. As the person who was impersonated, his estimate could not be overlooked.

"Understandable," Harry commented, jotting down a few more things. he'd speak to this Lisa now, and if he had any further questions for Jayne, he could easily come back. "No, that should be all for now. If I've anything else, I'll just come round again. Thanks."

He moved to leave and look for Lisa, wondering what would be the break in this case that actually got him somewhere.
