Shopping trip!
Characters: Angelina, Melinda, and Alicia (that work for posting order, I expect?)
Setting: Angie's place then out in shops to be determined. Thursday October 30, early afternoon.
Rating: Worksafe, possibly some language.
Summary: Angie needs a dress for the gala tomorrow night and she's enlisted the help of Alicia and Melinda. She's not exactly looking forward to it.

The best way to make sure Angelina Johnson was on time for something was to show up at her place and drag her out before she dawdled too long. Asking her to meet you somewhere was asking to be kept waiting, unless you were clever enough to tell her a time earlier than you really needed her to be there. To be honest, Angie wasn't even sure why she was so frequently late. She didn't take extra time to primp, charming her hair to behave didn't take long, and she didn't agonize over what to wear. She simply did a number of things at once, frequently distracted herself and lost track of time. She also tended to misjudged how long it took her to get someplace. Magical travel was near- if not completely instantaneous; she often waited until the last minute to leave and was inevitably held up doing something else.

On this occasion though, Alicia and Melinda were coming to get her, presumably so she didn't try to weasel out of a shopping trip. Angie didn't like shopping, but in the company of two women who did, she found it alternately exhausting and more tolerable. They made the experience more fun, but they also had a tendency to take their time, pick and choose, try on multiple things whereas Angie just wanted to get in, get something, and get it all over with. Angie had washed her hair that morning and was debating going curly and natural for once, but decided against it for now, charming her hair straight enough to tug into a ponytail. She got dressed, donning a purplish-grey t-shirt and tugging on blue jeans . She hadn't gotten her boots or her jumper on yet when she heard someone at the door.

Coming up the street, Alicia spotted Melinda at the door and shouted out, thinking she was about to be let in and not wanting Angie to get buzzed twice.

"Mel, hold up! I'm coming!"

Ally had dressed in her favourite jeans and jumper, and having seen the weather had grabbed her old House scarf to throw around her neck, as she always seemed to catch colds in her throat. She knew it didn't quite match the rest, and it was getting quite worn from over a decade of use, but it was still nice and fuzzy, and felt like home.

She playfully rolled her eyes as she looked Mel over. "I always feel so underdressed next to you," she teased.

Convenience made it so both women arrived at just about the same time, and Angie tugged open the door to see them both there. She was still shoeless, and felt the chill of the air from outside. "Perfect timing! I'm almost ready," Angie claimed and opened the door all the way to let them in. She disappeared into her own room to grab her boots and her jumper, tugged the latter on over her head and returning to sit to pull her boots on.

"Oh bother, where'd I drop my purse?" For Angie of course purse was literally a small wallet-sized money holder, one that most women then dropped in a handbag. Angie did no such thing. When she found said purse, she merely shoved it into her pocket. By the time all was said and done Angie was only close to ten minutes late, which wasn't really that bad, for her. "All right I'm ready. I'd ask where we're going but I should tell you what I'm looking for first, right? Well, I'll need a red or gold dress with some kind of feathers. I'm going as a phoenix and I've no idea what would look...well not foolish. This isn't a terrible idea, is it?"

Melinda grinned at Ally's gripe. "Well, if you were running in an out of meetings all day," she was just saying as the door opened, and the rest of the sentence was lost in favor of greeting Angie. "You, almost ready?" Melinda teased as she made her way inside. "But we're not even running late yet."

Melinda settled into a chair in the living room as Angie ran off. Melinda didn't mind waiting a bit, honestly. It gave her enough time to warm up a bit and take a breather after the hectic morning she'd had. Ten minutes was time enough to relax and chat a bit with Ally before Angie returned. Melinda stood then and smoothed down her skirt, a little surprised they were actually heading out so soon. "You really do want to get this over with don't you? I've never known you to get ready so quickly. Not that I'm complaining." Melinda's brows rose at Angie's costume idea, but she was smiling. "A phoenix? No, that's not terrible at all. I'd say it suits you. Right, Ally?"

"Of course our timing's perfect," Ally muttered to Mel as Angie disappeared. "We're not the ones always running late."

She flopped down onto the sofa and chatted with Mel while they waited, Ally playfully swinging her feet over the arm of the sofa. When Angie came back only a handful of minutes later, she made a great show of shock, looking at her watch and covering her open mouth with her hand.

"Oh, I can definitely see her in feathers," Ally said enthusiastically. "Maybe a nice red boa, and maybe one of those neat bandana feather things they used to wear in the 20s, or like those dancing girls in Las Vegas! I'm sure whatever we can't buy we can transfigure if we need to."

She tightened her scarf around her neck. "So, you feel like paying full price, or should we hit some of the consignment stores? That's where I got my costume."

Angie frowned at them both. "You know if you keep making such a show of complete shock that I'm only a few minutes late, I'll stop bothering to try," she said slightly sourly, the comment directed more at Alicia than Melinda, though she'd caught the surprise on Melinda's face as well. She looked back and forth between the two of them, wondering if this was really a bad idea after all.

She narrowed her eyes at Alicia her lips twisting minutely. "A boa, Ally? That's pushing things a bit. But I'm not above transfiguring something that isn't quite right." At Alicia's question, Angie shrugged. "I don't mind spending money, so long as it's not completely unreasonable. I've no need for fashionable name brands; I just want a dress that fits well enough. How abut something in between? Mid-range prices for ordinary dresses? You know I don't care about brand names."

Boots on, she stood, brushing down her jeans and heading for the door. "Mel, any suggestions where we might go?" Despite her frowns and complaints, it was obvious Angie was ready to get going.

"We're only teasing, Angie." Melinda was grinning at Ally's display, but she toned it down some when she saw the look on Angelina's face. Angelina looked about ready to call the whole things off and that just wouldn't do.

Trailing after Angelina, Melinda pursed her lips at the mention of a consignment shop, but only shook her head mildly. "We'll find you something wonderful, don't worry. Between the three of us, you'll be turning heads tomorrow night. Well, more than usual." She was glad when Angelina decided to go for something new rather than secondhand. "Well, you two would probably have more of an idea of where to go than I if you're looking for a simple muggle dress." Melinda shrugged. "The only place I can think to suggest for something suitable for a party at the Ministry - without going overboard - is perhaps Madam Malkin's." Their higher-end items were of good quality, but still off the rack so Angelina wouldn't have to be poked at by a seamstress.

"Don't listen to her, Mel - she complains, but I think she secretly likes the whole girly thing," Ally teased.

"Malkin's would be a nice place to start," she agreed. "If we can't find anything there, we can always apparate to Hogsmeade - I hear Gladrags is having a sale." Her eyes momentarily went dreamy. "I could use some new boots. Nice leather, oooh, maybe dragon-hide..."

He slid her arm into Angie's. "And no covering up the 'girls' this time either. Hallowe'en's for showing your assets, not hiding them."

Angie refrained from sticking her tongue out at Alicia, instead reaching out to sock her somewhat lightly on the arm. "Malkin's is fine with me," she replied eyeing, Ally as she went a bit dreamy. "No, don't start that. You want to spend all day shopping, you can count me right out." She fervently hoped they could find something right away and not have to go to multiple shops.

She rolled her eyes at that last bit. "I'm not putting them out on display, Ally. Merlin knows they just get in my way all the time. Turning heads is one thing," she nodded at Melinda, "but I don't want to be ogled." Not that that argument would hold. Ally and Melinda had gotten her into dresses before that flaunted her curves, even if she had grumbled about it.

Now that they had a destination, Angie didn't want to hesitate.

Melinda had to laugh at Alicia's suspicions. "Oh, I'm sure she enjoys it. So deep down she doesn't even realize it," she added with a roll of her eyes. The day Angelina actually enjoyed being girly was the day Melinda tried out for the Harpies.

Melinda was quick to join Angelina in curbing Alicia's consumer impulses. she nudged Alicia lightly with an elbow. "We actually want her to come along, remember?" She gave Ally a sideways glance and lowered her voice some. "However, if you spot anything particularly nice I will be quite interested in having a look. I could use a pair of new shoes myself."

When Angelina already started protesting the cut of a dress she didn't even have yet, Melinda gave a very unladylike snort. "Angie, I have to agree with Ally on this one. This is the one night you're supposed to pretend to be something you're not. Live a little. Besides, who's to say to can't do some ogling yourself?" It wasn't much of an argument, but Melinda knew that if they found the right dress, she and Ally would be able to talk Angelina into it.

Ally touched her finger to her nose to let Mel know she'd heard her loud and clear - her eyes would be on the lookout for shoe sales.

"Oh, I love it when some of the Scottish - or even the non-Scottish - blokes wear kilts. I always wonder if they're going regimental underneath," she added with a grin.

Within moments, they had traveled from Angie's place to Diagon Alley, and the bell at Madame Malkin's rang cheerily as they entered. Ally's eyes opened pleasantly at all the choices. She saw something soft and red and immediately gravittated to it. "Oooh, velour. You could be a fuzzy phoenix, Ang!"

Angie couldn't help smiling, just a little at first. She couldn't really pretend to be irritable for long - especially since when she actually was irritated, it was bloody obvious. With both women insisting that she let go just a bit, she found she couldn't argue. "Oh all right then, I expect I'll be doing a fair bit of ogling myself. It is only fair."

In slightly better spirits, she grinned wider at Ally's comment. "I've only managed to discover that for myself once or twice, but it was a resounding yes. I couldn't complain." She raised an eyebrow at Melinda, who actually was Scottish by nationality. "Anything to add on that?"

She glanced at the dress Ally picked out. "Definitely the right color, but that material's..." She ran a hand down it and wondered if she could manage to wear that all night. "Not really what I was thinking. I guess it's hard to describe. I want it to flow. Not be restricting, I mean."

"'If'? There's no question if you're talking about a true Scot," Melinda said with an arch smile and maybe just a hint of pride, then wasted no time in making a beeline towards the racks of dresses.

She was just wading through yards and yards of material when she glanced over at Ally's suggestion. "Velour? Oh, Ally, no! Velvet at the very least. Silk, maybe. But I was thinking maybe feathers or sequins." Melinda went back to search through the racks. "Something flashy and attention-grabbing like a phoenix should be. Oh, maybe something like this?" She held up a red gown with a plunging neckline.

Ally gasped in pleasure at the dress Mel held up. "Oh, that's just stunning. I love the neckline! Ang, if you don't take this one, I might be forced to try it on myself."

She traced a finger along the neckline, imagining how it could be made more phoenix-like. "Maybe some gold sequins, some faux-jewels... and of course a slit up the side. Gotta show off them legs, luv."

She looked at Mel with an evil look. "I'm sure we can slip some feathers in there too, huh?"

Angie grinned widely at Melinda, and nearly felt the rush of air as Melinda made a beeline for the dresses. The first one Ally had held up had been a no, but Melinda's nearly made Angelina go for the door. "You're mad. I'd fall right out of that one. Feel free to claim it, Ally, I won't fight you for it." She pursed her lips and then conceded, "It's pretty enough, I'll grant, but I'll be horribly uncomfortable in it all night long."

She considered Ally's suggestions. "Right, I don't mind a slit up the side, but not on this dress, that isn't happening." She stepped forward and began to rifle through dresses herself, pausing at ones with out quite so daring necklines as Melinda's suggestion.

Melinda huffed at Angie's protest, but she knew before she opened her mouth that it would be a lost cause. Even if she reassured Angie that magic could make sure things stayed where they were supposed to, the dress was a bit daring for Angelina's tastes. So, instead, Melinda handed off the dress to Ally. "Here, Ally, you have a go at it, since our Harpy here is so prudish." She was only half-teasing as she went pack to scouring the racks.

She was finding plenty of dresses that were a better cut, but only barely, and completely the wrong color. Color was fixable with magic, but she preferred exhausting all their options before going that route. "Is this better?" she asked, holding up a shimmery gold dress.

Ally tried not to make a great show of grabbing the daring red dress and laying it over her arm to try on later.

She quirked her head as she looked at the gold dress. "It's gorgeous, but we'd need enough red to balance out the gold." She gasped as she spotted a pair of shoes. "Oh, ladies, are these phoenix shoes or what?!"

Angie actually reached for the gold dress, her eyes widening. "Now this one's gorgeous," she replied. It was definitely a possibility. She even forgave Melinda for the prude comment because of that find, but then Ally held up a pair of shoes that actually had Angie shrinking back in near-horror. "Are you mad? You're taking the piss with me right?"

She wouldn't even touch them. "Why would anyone even make those? Put them down before they bite you," she added. She had to smirk though at how eagerly Ally took the red dress. "Well, someone's really glad I said no to that one, huh?"

Ally's selection of a shoe did serve a decent purpose however: Angie hadn't even thought about footwear and now was reminded she needed that as well. "I forgot about shoes entirely," she admitted.

Melinda was fairly certain she couldn't actually look directly at the shoes Ally was holding up and there was no hiding the naked distaste on her face. "Whoever designed those shoes should be punished for crimes against humanity," she said flatly. "Though, you are right. She definitely needs more red in her outfit. As for shoes..." She was about to suggest Ally take care of that, but after that first selection, Melinda wasn't so sure. "We'll worry about those after we find you a proper dress."

"But-" Ally began to protest, but stopped when she realized Mel had a point. If she got started on shoes now, she'd get completely side-tracked - and the shoes had to go with the dress, after all.

A tuft of feathers brushed against her ankle as she passed a display rack, and upon closer inspection, she saw something that might fit more with Angie's idea. "How about this?" She held out the red, feathered gown for their perusal.

Angie actually felt relieved that Melinda's reaction to those shoes wasn't too far off her own. She was even more pleased though that Ally redeemed herself entirely with the next dress she pulled. "Now we're getting closer," she replied reaching for that one as well. The red was perfect and she liked the way it flowed. She'd have to try it on, but it was pretty high up on the list. She just wasn't sure hoe the drape of it would fit her frame. "All right, pick one more ladies, and I'll go try these on and see what's the winner.

She looked through racks herself, but didn't really expect to find much on her own.

Melinda 'ooh'-ed at Ally's next dress selection. "Oh, that's lovely!" Even better, Angie seemed to like it which was one of the biggest hurdles of this whole process. Not to be outdone, Melinda went back to searching. A few moments later, she spotted a bit of red peeking out from between an orange and a blue dress on an overstuffed rack near the rear of the shop.

Pulling the dress out carefully, Melinda only managed not to crow her success. The color was incredibly, as was the cut, but it was the feathery hem that truly made the dress. Now, if only Angie thought so. Returning to the others, she held out the dress to Angie. "Here. You must try this one on and I won't take no for an answer."

Ally 'ooohed' over the new dress, loving the neckline immediately. "Oh, it's just perfect! If you don't try it on, we'll have to force it on you," she teased.

Once Angie had the newest dress in hand, Ally started playfully pulling Angie toward the dressing rooms. "Now to try them on - you have to model them for us, of course. And put a little attitude into your walk, eh?"

Angie stared at the dress Melinda had pulled. The feathery bottom was exactly what she'd been looking for, though she was slightly dubious about the top. She didn't get a chance to voice her opinion though, not when neither of them seemed ready to accept a no. Well, fine, she'd try it one and judge for herself.

The gold dress went on first, and, despite Ally's request, there was not exactly much attitude when she came out. The dress looked fine - more than - in her opinion, but she wasn't sure it was quite right.

The red one Ally pulled was next and Angie liked it more than the gold. The bottom was very nice, but the top draped on her in a strange way. She thought it would suit someone with a smaller chest.

That left that last dress. Angie slipped it on, and was surprised that it fit perfectly. It had more support in the top than had she expected, and when she stepped out this time, there was attitude in her walk, albeit unconscious. Her body language, more so than she herself, made it clear she like the way it fit, low neckline or not.
