The surprise had been blown but it didn't mean that Ernie was going to do a lesser job at the party, nor did it mean that it wasn't going to be a great time. What his goal in the end was to celebrate his best friend, of course. Ernie tried his best to forgive Zacharias during these trying times, but the man was getting on his nerves. He felt bad for Smith, and had accompanied Heather to the funeral that morning, but steered clear of his former classmate, just since he wasn't sure what he'd do if he had heard another smart remark.

He shook his head as if in an effort to dislodge his former classmate from his mind. Ernie had ordered enough pizza, and put out enough crisps and other snacks to feed a small army. He would rather have too much than too little, and had similarly erred on the side of caution when it came to drink. He was aware that Bianca was going to bring in some cake, and all was well in the world. For now, at least.

Jasper didn't notice the commotion at the front door at first, having finally had enough to drink to engage Bianca in conversation without Justin as a buffer. Distracted by the pink flush of Bianca's cheeks, she'd just convinced Jasper to play his cello for her some time when Zacharias's voice filled the room and demanded attention.

Jasper had already been flushed from drink and Bianca's company, but Zacharias's brutal rant made him go pale before the blood returned to his face in an angry rush. With every word, Zacharias flayed everyone within earshot and beyond - even poor Justin, his one defender. And as Justin ran off, the devastation on his face plain, Jasper started moving before he realized.

It was only because Jasper was farther away that Michael got to Zacharias first, and the rush of vindictive delight Jasper felt when Michael's fist made contact with Zacharias's face was wholly foreign to him. But it was heady and it was with great satisfaction that he reached the brewing fray in time to catch Zacharias's arm in a surprisingly steely grip. Years of playing bass and cello would do that. "The only sad little man I see is you, Smith," Jasper grit out through clenched jaw. "You need to make everyone hate you just so they know you exist."

Ern's initial reaction was absolute shock and absolute terror at Zacharias' opinions being voiced in such a way. He spilled the contents of his glass over himself when the bag of galleons had flown towards his chest. He didn't need anymore alcohol for a situation like this. He dropped the bag on the floor with a thud and a clatter as the contents managed to disperse across the room. He was furthest across the room, but he made it to the doorway with relative haste. The years of training weren't for nothing, after all.

"Bloody hell," he muttered to himself as in a way he did wish that he was there earlier to smack Zacharias upside the head, but at the same time he was sober enough to realize the potential implications of attacking his former classmate. But he wasn't sober enough to remember right at this moment that he had his wand on him. Instead he grabbed Michael's arms from behind in an attempt to lock them from further punches to the man before him. "Michael," he said in a reprimanding tone. "You can't just do that even if he is the biggest arse in the world."

Michael was going to try to land another punch in that smug little bastard's gut but something was hindering him now. His arm wasn't moving, but he still kept trying to propel it at Smith's body anyhow. Finally he looked over when he heard Ernie saying his name.

He gave Ernie a look as though he'd lost his mind because clearly he had if he was willing to stop Michael from doing this. Justin was his best mate, for Merlin's sake, didn't he want to smear that stupid prat's face against the wall? "Oh I bloody well can, Ernie, if you let go of my sodding arm!" Michael tugged against Ernie's grip, forgetting the fact that Ernie was probably much stronger than he was considering the training he'd had in his line of work.

"Don't touch me you bloody wanker." Because that was the only plausible reason as to why Jasper Dorny could have stopped him. Zacharias struggled against Jasper, eventually shaking his arm free. Only by that point he didn't want to punch Michael. That had just been instinct anyway. It was the sort of thing you were supposed to do when someone hit you - you hit them back, preferably harder.

But there was something to be said about seeing Ernie Macmillan jump to his defense, so true to form it was almost pathetic. "Well, isn't that just classic Macmillan right here." Okay, so maybe it was pathetic and the sort of thing he wanted to see, confusing as his head was right now. Not that he was going to ever admit he actually liked having one person that might sometimes be on his side.

"Ernie, what are you doing?" It was Jasper's absolute disbelief at Ernie's reaction that loosened his grip enough for Zacharias to shake him free. How could Ernie come to this bastard's defense after all he'd said and done? Not just now but for years! No, Jasper was completely with Michael on this one.

Especially when Zacharias opened his mouth again and Jasper whirled on him. "Don't you start. Don't you fucking start, Smith," Jasper snarled, the alcohol he'd had making the more ferocious of his Hufflepuff tendencies come to the fore. "Because right now Ernie is the only one - God knows why - who doesn't want to knock your teeth in right now." He shoved a finger in Zacharias's chest. "The best thing you can do right now is get your sorry arse out of here."

"Stop, Michael," Ernie said his tone of voice getting more firm and controlled as time went on and he settled into a firmer hold. "Just stop," he repeated. He ignored the comments from Smith as they were to be expected. He's had to deal with those for years.

"First," he said, trying to reason it out in a way that would make them stop. "He's drunk as heck. He's probably been drunk the whole day--his father's just been buried."

"Second, this is my flat, and we're not going to have any fights in here. And third--in any case, it's my fault he's been invited. It's just as easily my fault that this happened."

Michael wished that Jasper would have punched that git while he was not being held back, since Michael was currently not able to do so. He was being more rational and talking, though, which was not what Michael wanted to do. He wouldn't stand for his mates being bullied like this, especially if he could do something about it and knocking Smith in the face quite a few times was certainly doing something about it in his book.

Michael was listening to Ernie, but he was staring at Smith, considering where he could lunge at next when he finally figured out a way to free himself from Ernie's grasp. But he heard Ernie's second point and that was what made Michael stop struggling where nothing else would have. He wasn't going to trash Ernie's place, especially not when he was currently holding him back and telling him not to do so. He sighed, saying, "Fuckin' hell, Ern, did you listen to that prat? This is no one's fault but his for being such a bloody wanker."

Michael turned to Smith whom he was still pointing at and said, "Just get the fuck out of here, Smith. You've said your piece, ruined the party, mission complete. Now sod off." His heart wasn't really in the words; all he could really think of now was checking on Justin and going to bed.

"Fuck you, Corner. People get treated exactly how they treat others." It was rather circular logic that didn't quite work, but he had said his piece. Hell, he probably would have left sooner if not for the outburst he somehow got caught up in. And while he was still planning to leave, it certainly didn't want to just go out with his tail between his legs.

While the other men might have forgot their wands, Zacharias Smith hadn't. He pulled out his wand, mind spinning with spells he could use that would allow him a more fitting exit. Zacharias quickly settled on a well aimed spell that made every cup and bottle explode sending a rain of beverages upon the guests. "Have a fantastic night, ladies."

Unlike before, this time he didn't linger around for their reaction. They wanted him gone and he wanted to go, he had nothing left here. Zacharias Smith just backed up and out of the door, with the intent to apparate away once in the hallway again.

When Ernie spoke, Jasper's attention left Zacharias's - long enough for him to draw his wand. Whatever stirrings of sympathy Ernie might have caused in Jasper for Zacharias was squashed completely when that explosive spell was cast.

Jasper jumped in surprise along with everyone else, Zacharias's last remark ringing in his ears. He watched Zacharias go for the door, but didn't follow, instead calling after him, "Once a coward, always a coward, eh, Smith? You get treated exactly how you deserve." And Jasper was done with him. He had more important things to worry about - like seeing if Justin and Bianca were okay.

As he started back to wear he'd left Bianca, Jasper cast Ernie a look. "Stop making excuses for him. He's the last person who deserves it."

The explosions startled Ernie and in an almost automatically programmed response he had pushed Michael towards the floor and drew his wand, and pointed it to Smith. It took him a few seconds to get past the initial reaction to the noise. But when he realized what it really was he could still feel his heart pounding in his ears. He let out a sigh. And he let his arms drop to his side. Casting Zacharias one glance that really did speak of the mix of confusion, frustration (and anger, although he wouldn't really admit that right away), and pity, he wordlessly turned away. He couldn't even say whether he would prefer to have Michael and Jasper to have at Zacharias at this point. He just had enough of that for now.

What he needed to do was to see whether Justin was alright. He remembered seeing Dean follow him, but still wanted to ensure that he was alright.
