Rated PG
Who: Justin Finch-Fletchley and Hannah Abbott
What: Talking about the night before
Where: Hannah's flat and the Leaky Cauldron
When: Thursday, October 30, 2003 - 10:45, then noonish

Justin rapped on the door to Hannah's flat for the fifth time in a row, and still there was no answer. He knew she must be gone, but he still felt like he had to try. Only when one of the neighbours stuck their head outside to glare at him did he decide to put a stop to his efforts. He tried to smile at them with his usual winning smile... but for the first time in nearly five years, his heart wasn't in it.

He was still shaken by the... whatever it was he'd seen last night. Vision? Waking nightmare? He had almost given in to the temptation to stay at home, cuddled with his Mum in front of the TV, but though he knew she understood, he couldn't do that to her.

And so he'd gone in search of Hannah and another motherly/sisterly cuddle.

She wasn't there, though, and while Justin had several current and former lovers and friends he could visit with, there were only a handful he could truly feel safe being vulnerable with, and two of the three were likely working today. Then again, Hannah would be working today as well, but Tom was more than used to Justin popping in and taking up her time. He'd tried complaining about it a few times, but every time he did, Justin simply tossed him a few galleons to compensate for her time.

With a nod, Justin decided to head to the Leaky, grab a snack, and wait for Hannah to arrive.

A short chat with Tom, who immediately noticed Justin's off-mood, and a basket of chips later had Justin tucked into a booth, his eye on the door, waiting for Hannah's arrival.

Hannah had been out with Bianca all morning. It had been nice to have something a bit light hearted to occupy her time even though the terror of the night before had been sitting on the edge of her consciousness all day. Being in the Muggle world where people weren't as keen to notice something wrong had been a bit of a blessing. Hannah was glad she had insisted on allowing Bianca to determine their location.

When the arrived at the Leaky once again, Hannah took a deep breath. She didn't know what kind of news faced her upon her arrival back to the wizarding world. Honestly, she didn't want to hear from anyone other than Ernie. Maybe she'd get lucky and he would be able to break away for lunch and alleviate some of her worry. She knew that if he were to have arrived he wouldn't be downstairs, he would be up in her flat. With all hope she didn't even take the time to look around down stairs she immediately headed up.

Justin looked up from his chips at the sound of the opening door, and felt a wash of relief as he saw it was Hannah. He moved his hand to wave her over... but she simply looked straight ahead, intent on her destination, which was apparently her flat upstairs.

He sighed. Her mind was obviously on something. She couldn't have seen something last night too... could she? No, that would be too weird, more than one person...

He shook his head and rose from the table, abandoning his leftover chips to follow Hannah upstairs.

Once there, he knocked on the door, knowing she would answer this time. If she didn't, he'd have to knock the door down, or... something.

Hannah flung the door of the flat open so hard that it immediately closed itself behind her. She sighed when she noticed the place was just as empty now as she had left it that morning. When the knock sounded on her door, she jumped. Hannah wasn't expecting anyone and Ernie would have just let himself in. Panic flashed through her mind as she remembered her dream. What if it was coming true, what if Ern was there with the Death Eaters come to make her watch him die?

No, that couldn't be. Bianca had told her that several others had dreams as well. If everyone was having dreams that showed their greatest fears then they couldn't have been premonitions. They just couldn't. "Who's there?" she demanded knowing that she'd not yet had time to cast the necessary security charms meaning whoever it was could storm in on her without warning now that she had let them know she was home.

Hannah asking who's there rather than opening the door? Something must really be wrong! But where Justin would normally put on a laughing smile and stroll into the flat, intent on grabbing her into a bear hug to take away whatever was bothering her, he now simply leaned against the door jamb.

"It's Justin," he said, his natural ebullience absent from his voice. "I was, um, waiting for you downstairs. You didn't see me when you got in."

When Justin announced himself, Hannah breathed a light sigh of relief. However, she wasn't quite ready to believe it was him. She remembered some of the precautions that had been in place during the war. Checking the identity of the person by asking a question only they would know had become almost second nature.

She opened the door but held her wand at the ready. "What did MacMillian say when he finally asked me out?" Justin was the only person she had told that information to and she doubted he'd shared it with anyone else.

Justin blinked as a wand was pointed in his direction. He instinctively raised his hands in a surrendering motion.

"Well, technically he didn't really ask you out, no matter how I bugged him about it. You asked him to dance, and he said yes, only if you'd agree to many more dances to come. Or something corny like that."

When he answered the question correctly she ushered him in. "Sorry about that, you wouldn't believe the night I had," she pulled him to her in a hug. "From what I've heard several people had similar experiences last night." She spoke as if it were common knowledge that just about everyone had experienced some sort of scare.

She backed up some but kept her hands on his shoulders. Since Ern wasn't there Hannah was more than happy to savor the physical closeness of Justin and knew that he wouldn't mind in the least bit. "I just wish I'd hear something from him," she released Justin long enough to go over to where she kept her journal so she could open it for a quick check.

Just allowed himself to be led in, unusually quiet. When she hugged him, he hugged back, but grew confused at her words.

Experiences that several people had? Maybe it was just him after all. In a way it was a relief, but it did nothing to dispel his unease. In fact, he began to wonder if he should really be bothering Hannah with it after all. She obviously had enough on her mind, no need to worry her about himself. Perhaps he should visit Cho, but she likely was busy at work, or something.

Perhaps he should just go back to his Mum.

"Hear from whom?" he asked, wondering if he'd missed something. "Ernie? Is he okay? Did something happen at work?"

His already frayed nerves were set on edge again at the thought that something may have happened to his best mate.

Hannah noticed the lack of typical Justin flare. She hadn't seen him so melancholy since the training incident. "He's fine," she said just as much for herself as for Justin. "We both had some awful nightmares last night and neither of us got much sleep after that." She hated the thought of his being at work with very little sleep and the world possibly beginning to fall apart. It was dangerous to say the least, at most fatal.

"You look like you could use some tea," she headed to the kitchen to put a kettle on. There was nothing else to clean up because she'd been at Ern's last night so she was able to quickly return to Justin.

Justin nodded, relieved that nothing bad had happened to Ernie, other than nightmares which were bad enough. And Hannah had them too - nightmares, not visions like whatever it was that happened to him last night...

He sat down on the couch, his eyes looking down to where his hands gripped each other between his knees. Perhaps he shouldn't have come, shouldn't have bothered her. It was all so fresh.

But he sure could use that cup of tea.

When Hannah used the word nightmares, it was a severe understatement. Ernie had been dead, he was lying on ground with the Dark Mark hovering over him just as surely as Justin was now sitting on the couch. She had watched him die. She had felt the horror of knowing that he would never hold her again. She had felt the arm of the Death Eater holding her, his breath hot on her skin as he reminded her that death was the only thing fitting for purebloods that chose to dirty their blood.

As she reached for the tea cups, she sighed and involuntarily closed her eyes as she did so. Again, the images were fresh in her mind and the cup dropped as she brought her hand up to cover the cry that tried to escape her throat again. Only when the sound of shattering glass pierced her mind was she pulled back into the kitchen.

"Damn it," she fumbled for her wand so she could clean up the mess. A few moments later she had two cups of tea prepared, one just the way her friend liked it. "Sorry, I've been shakey all morning."

Justin shot up at the sound of broken glass and began moving toward the kitchen, but stopped when she apologized. He hovered nearby in case she needed him, but she seemed to have everything in hand.

"From what you've said, I guess not many people are having a good day today."

He took his cup, then took her elbow with his spare hand. "Come on, you look like you need to sit down. Do you want to talk about it?"

Sure Justin, again worry about everyone else's problems why don't you. You don't have any, you're not supposed to, right?

Hannah allowed Justin to lead her to the couch. She wasn't going to tell him any specifics. He worried about Ernie just as much as she did and the last thing she wanted to do was cause Justin excess worry.

"How are you doing?" she asked. It wasn't often that one saw Justin prior to noon unless you were already in his bed. Seeing as that wasn't her case, there had to be something going on with him. "Did you have nightmares last night?" She lifted her cup to her mouth and waited for his answer.

He took her lack of answer as a distinct no, meaning it probably bothered her enough that she didn't want to worry Justin with it.

Something they obviously had in common.

"No nightmares," he said with a shake of his head, "but... something happened." He paused, and looked her in the eye. "I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours."

Never would anyone have thought he could say that phrase without a quirky grin or a waggling eyebrow.

Hannah slumped her shoulders. Even when he wasn't in the mood to joke around Justin was as persistent as ever.

"I've not had dreams like that since Mum died," she stated knowing he would be able to recall her sudden fear back then that everyone that was important to her would be killed. Of course, Justin hasn't been a victim in this dream. However, she was certain had it continued she would have eventually seen him paraded before her too as a nasty mudblood.

He reached out for her hand and held it tightly, lending her whatever little strength he had left - he would always have some to spare for her, no matter what.

"Tell me," he said softly, feeling she needed to get the words out to get it properly off her chest.

She'd held the details in all day. She'd not even told the full thing to Ernie, she'd just been so glad that he was alive that she didn't want to further mar the night.

"They killed him because of me," tears started to fall from her eyes. "Just like they killed Mum because of Pop."

He put down his cup of tea, then held her hand between both of his. He didn't need to ask who they'd killed, he knew. Ernie. In the dream, the 'they' had likely been Death Eaters. They'd been part of their nightmares for so long, and Hannah even longer after the death of her mother.

He'd tell her it was just a dream, but she knew that already.

"You watched it happen? They made you?" he guessed. After all, wasn't that often what made things the most terrifying?

She didn't answer his questions, she was certain that the look on her face and the tears were all the answer he needed. She reached over with her other hand and squeezed the one on top of hers.

"What about you?" she simply inquired. She didn't ask whether or not he had been alone at the time because it was none of her business. She was just grateful that Ernie had been there and that he was indeed alive.

Justin nodded at her silence, understanding.

He shrugged at her question, trying to avoid her prying and seeing if she would forget his promise to tell his own story. "I told you, I didn't have a nightmare. Nightmare-free am I."

He tried quirking up his lips into a smirk, but failed miserably.

"But something happened," she pressed the issue. From what she had gathered so far most of the incidents, nightmares or not, had involved a link to another person. "Who was it?"

She hated when they did this to her. Both he and Ernie kept the full truth from her thinking they were protecting her when in all honesty they were simply infuriating her. Perhaps if she needed to open up a bit more to Justin to get him to speak up himself. "You've got to promise me you won't tell Ernie. He knows I thought he was dead, but he doesn't know why. I didn't tell him it was my fault."

"It doesn't matter what they said in your dream," Justin said emphatically, squeezing her hand too tightly by accident. "It was not your fault."

A tear escaped his own eye as he tried to drive that into her. "Not your fault, no matter what they say."

He was so insistent in his reiteration of the statement that Hannah knew it had to do something with his.... Hell, she didn't know what he'd experienced because he wouldn't tell her.

"Damn it Justin," she was getting frustrated. She pulled her hands from his. "Will you just bloody tell me!"

Her hands pulling away felt like a slap in the face. He hung his head, unable to look at her. He knew now she wouldn't let it go - he wouldn't either. That was the good thing, and the annoying thing, about good friends like Hannah. That didn't mean it was easy, though.

"I wasn't asleep," he began, his shoulders hunched around his chin. "I had a bloke over, and we were in the middle of what was some pretty fantastic sex, actually... Then I hear this voice, and I look up, and... there's my Dad, standing right next to the bed, asking how could I cause him to die like that. I... I thought I was going crazy, seeing things. I'm still not sure, actually."

When he spoke, Hannah immediately felt guilty for pulling away. What he'd experienced had been worse than hers. At least in her dream Ernie hadn't blamed her.

"You're right," she reached out and took his hands into hers once again. "No matter what was said, it wasn't your fault."

Justin shrugged again, but welcomed her touch when it returned. "It doesn't matter. What matters is... my dad was standing next to my bed. Watching me shag no less!" he added, trying for humour, and at least managing a little bit.

"Bloke took off - probably thought I was off my rocker. I stayed with Mum all night, told her I missed dad. I was afraid to tell her what happened."

He finally looked up to meet Hannah's eyes. "You think... there are others who saw stuff when they were awake too? Like everyone who had nightmares?"

God, he hoped the answer was yes.

Hannah wished her dream had featured her mother again. Those dreams, while still rather painful even seven years later, were feelings she was used to. But this had''t been just a dream, she had felt every bit of the panic and fear. She had watched the events unfold and knew in her core that they were true. Yes, Ernie had been there when she'd awaken. Still something about the reality of it all still nagged at her.

She didn't comment further as he spoke. She could have asked if his father had really been there the way the Death Eater had actually held her back from going to Ernie's aid. Hannah knew by the way he was shaken that whether it was so or not, Justin likely believed that he would have actually been able to touch his father had he reached out.

"I don't know," she answered truthfully. "We were both asleep. Ernie didn't talk much about his. Just that it was a very bad dream, but he was rather shaken. But neither of us went back to sleep. At least not for any decent amount of time." She shuddered involuntarily as she realized that the dream seemed more and more like a vision as Bianca had alluded. The original had scared her, let her feel each and every moment. Even now, when she closed her eyes it was there, that was what made this different the nightmares about her mother. Those usually faded within the hour after she awoke.

Justin nodded and sighed, not receiving the confirmation he'd hoped to get. Maybe he was the only person who'd seen something while awake. Maybe he was going a little crazy. Honestly, if it was going to happen, this wasn't the way he'd imagined it.

"You know... I don't think I'm going crazy," he said decisively. "If I were, then dad would have been praising my technique, not blaming me for his death."

This time, his smile succeeded because it was genuine.

When his smile crept onto his face, Hannah released Justin's hands. She had been able to forget for a bit this morning when she and Bianca had shopped for dresses. Now, she had to get downstairs as her shift was starting in a little while.

"Why don't you come down stairs with me?" she offered. "Perhaps someone down there can let us know if you were the only on to have a waking vision." Then again perhaps he didn't want to know for sure. "If not, I insist you stay up here. Go lie down and try to get some sleep. I'm sure Ernie will want you here when he comes over tonight."

She hated that today was her late shift. However, she would be able to come back up whenever things were slow and during her quick breaks. She hated even more knowing that if something had indeed gone down throughout their world that it was very likely Ernie would not be coming home tonight.

Justin nodded. "I could do with a room full of people. Not really in the mood to be alone right now, I guess."

He stood up and started for the door, then paused and looked over at her. "Who knows, there might be someone fit downstairs looking for a distraction from their nightmares," he added with a wink.
