A moment's peace
Characters: Adrian and Theo
Setting: London, nearabouts the ministry, Wednesday November 5th around 9:30 AM
Summary: Adrian needs a jumpstart on Harry's case and take a short break where he runs into Theo
Rating: Worksafe

Adrian did not like the fact that Harry's case was not getting any closer to solved. Between the pressure from the media, from the populace, from the DMLE and from Adrian himself, every day that slipped by without an answer was like a slap in the face. He'd been given a chance to work on an extremely high profile case and he had no intention of letting it go unsolved. He owe that to himself, and to the people whose lives were torn apart by the death of someone they cared about. It was Harry Potter. How could he not get his murder solved, as soon as possible? It had only been days, certainly, but those days felt like weeks, especially since they had so little to go on.

They needed suspects. They needed interviews. They needed evidence. They needed a hell of a lot of things they did have. All Adrian had was speculation. He made a mental note to check in with Cade sooner rather than later and see how his case was going. Perhaps bouncing thoughts at him might help jumpstart his own. Adrian threw on his coat and grabbed his cigarettes. He needed a short break and so he headed outside. After surfacing from underground, Adrian chose a building several doors down from the one under which the ministry hid and leaned against it, lighting up. He watched muggles and wizards alike go by, the latter blending in seamlessly to the former, and wondered how many of them suffered from the nightmares that were going around.

"Right. And I'm sure there aren't many better ways of dealing with that. But then again, I suppose I am not your mother," Theodore said with a shrug. "Well speak for yourself, Pucey." He grinned at a thought or two of his own vices that he would think were not too obvious to most. "You obviously didn't get the memo that proclaimed my perfection and lack of vice."

"Hot, dry, but interesting, for awhile at least," he replied, returning from his previously sarcastic tone. "And, how is Potter's case going? I can't imagine that you will get little or any rest until it is solved. But congratulations on being assigned such a high-profile case. When you do solve it, I can imagine it'd be incredibly helpful for your career."

"Perhaps. But I like to do what works for me," Adrian replied simply. As for the comment about his mother, Adrian snorted. "thanks Merlin I've only got one of those, thought often I think the one is one too many." He smiled a little then at Theodore's claim to perfection. "There are some who would argue that perfection itself and the strive to maintain it is in and of itself a vice." Interesting school of thought.

He nodded at Theodore's description of Egypt. About what he was expecting, really. He sighed. "Potter's case is going more slowly than I'd like, but at least we're not at a complete standstill. We've a meeting with Gaskin tomorrow morning and hopefully we'll know some more then." He wouldn't go into much more detail than that, of course. "Thank you. I'd like to think so as well. It gives me multiple reasons to want to solve it as fast as possible."

"I see," Theodore said. "But I suppose the pressure is on now though too. Or it has been from the beginning. Seeing that the saviour of the world as we know it has been off-ed just like that. Right in front of the Ministry building, no less."

It had been less than a week since Potter had died, and the anxiety was palpable in most parts. Perhaps since the number of recent violent deaths had been steadily growing, without any solutions in sight.

"Is it linked to the other deaths?" He wasn't sure how much Pucey could disclose, but he would never know if he never asked. And this was important enough to know.

"Exactly," Adrian said flatly. "There was no wiggle room for him on this. If he somehow failed, it was unlikely he'd get another chance like this again. If he succeeded - no, when he told himself - it was uncertain how well the ministry was reward a job well done. "Not in front of the ministry," Adrian corrected. "Within. On a night when there was public access, meaning anyone could have been in the atrium." That much was public knowledge by now, so he wasn't revealing anything he had to keep close to the chest.

At Theo's question, Adrian took a moment to take another drag. "There's nothing to support that at the moment," he replied. It was a bit evasive, but completely true. There was nothing to support it, and Theo hadn't been clear as to which deaths. Adrian suspecting Harry's and Zurlo's were connected, but had no proof yet. As for the other murders, they could be as well, but again, no solid evidence to prove it.

That's what made the whole thing so bloody frustrating: the lack of anything concrete to go on.

Upon being corrected, Theodore replied. "Then all the more reason to resolve this case as quickly as possible. I'm sure it looks rather bad for the Ministry."

"I see," he said, looking at Adrian with the same curious expression on his face but letting the question slide. He knew he wanted to press for a bit more information, but knew that there will most certainly be a limit. "It just seemed rather unusual that such things would happen over a short period, and so close to one another. But I suppose it will be revealed in due time."

"I'm certain the Ministry doesn't want that," he said, slightly drily before inhaling one last time, and then stubbed out the end of the cigarette.

He watched that curious expression on Theo's face and his own lips twitched into a near smile. "It does. That's why every possibility is being explored, If they're connected, we'll find that out. If they're not, well, we'll make that clear too. I just hope to do it sooner rather than later."

Sighing, he pushed himself off the stone wall behind him. "So, where were you headed before you saw me and decided to subtly asked about the investigation?" Adrian's tone was actually amused, almost teasing.

Theodore looked back at Adrian calmly and unfazed by the auror making it clear that he was aware of his subtle questioning. "To answer your attempt to shift topics," he started.

"I was headed to one of my preferred suppliers of scones and coffee. It has been a week that treats of any shape or form are of necessity." A smile crossed his face for a brief moment when he thought about the rather good shag yesterday, which did manage to some extent overshadow the concerns he had about spots and nightmares. For now at least. He still wouldn't let his mind wander too far into the nightmares once more.

Adrian shrugged one shoulder at that comment, leaving it alone otherwise.

"Well please don't let me keep you further. In fact, it would behoove me to get back inside and search for a break in this case." His mind cleared, Adrian was actually quite prepared to get back to work. the conversation with Theodore, though brief, had actually helped clear his thoughts as much as the cigarette had.

"Of course. I wouldn't want to distract you too long from your case. It is quite important work." Theodore's mind wandered along the line of meaningful work before it returned to the conversation at hand. He had felt that for the past while he had a relatively meaningless existence. But that was something to ponder some other day.

"I wish you well in your investigation, Pucey," he said, before heading off towards the cafe.
