wandering around
Who: Ginny and...?
What: Wandering around these hallowed halls
When: After the funeral, before the quidditch game
Where: Hogwarts

Ginny honestly didn't listen to most of what had been said at the funeral. Important people giving speeches, people crying, still expressing shock, and whatever, she had done that all before. Been there. Done that.

What could she even say?

She ended up wandering the hallways of the school. People who might actually speak to her were outside. Inside milled students whose names she didn't know, whose stories she didn't have to care or think about.

Inside the school, she could just forget.

After the funeral, Luna had headed to the Room of Requirement. That it had survived the battle hadn't surprised her all that much. She spent a few minutes with it just as it was the day she'd returned to fight at the Battle of Hogwarts. Then it was the Malfoy dungeon where she'd greeted Harry and Ron as they'd been brought down to join the others in the basement. The room shifted according to her whims, her memory, offering her moments when she'd been with Harry or been inspired by him.

It settled on the room as it had been during DA practice. She moved around, fingertips caressing the scorched walls from where spells had hit, skipping carefully around the figures of Death Eater mannequins that had taken far more abuse than most of the actual Death Eaters had faced at their hands. When she'd circled it fully, Luna stopped, glancing around and nodding. The room changed again.

She was standing alone, the room became a dedication. A portrait of each of her friends was there on the round walls surrounding her. She stepped towards Harry's portrait and smiled sadly. "I'll miss you. Watch over those who love you still. I think we may need it."

With that, she headed toward the door, the room not changing. The portrait of Harry nodded, his glasses slightly askew but he seemed not to notice. The other portraits were there; all of the painted eyes focused on Harry who waved at her as he had once from Platform 9 3/4.

Running across Ginny hadn't been intentional, but then perhaps her feet knew the way, knew to find one of her closest friends, and the one who needed the most watching after. Stepping up to keep step with her she glanced at her sideways then looked to see where they were heading.

"I'm sorry I didn't come by yesterday, but I suppose you were pretty busy anyway."

"Excuse me," said a voice next to the girls, "but would either of you have a sherbet lemon?"

There against the wall was a painting of a unicorn, and right next to it, running a long-fingered hand along its mane, was Albus Dumbledore.

For a moment, Ginny's mind went blank. She was about to say something stupid, maybe even dig into her pocket and look for a sherbet lemon. Not that she ever carried them, but it seemed like the thing to do when the Headmaster was asking for a sweet.

The dead Headmaster.

Because Albus Dumbledore was, in fact, dead.

"Uh." She looked at Luna. She was usually good at explaining the inexplicable.

Luna blinked, digging into her pockets and pulling out a gobstone. She shook her head, replying before her brain caught up completely. "No, I haven't got--" She tilted her head. "Good afternoon, Professor Dumbledore. I didn't remember you having a portrait here." Somewhere in her mind she believed he should have had one but then again, her memories of the Headmaster's office were limited to Umbridge's and Snape's reigns. Well, if he didn't then perhaps she just needed more sleep.

"I'm not entirely sure I could give you one either way."

Dumbledore's face was momentarily clouded with disappointment, but this was quickly replaced by a smile. "Perhaps so, but the desire remains. Perhaps one day someone shall paint a portrait of them so that I may have one."

The unicorn snorted and shook off the wizard's hand, then took a few steps away so that it could nibble on a nearby patch of clover. Dumbledore's hands folded behind his back.

"My condolences to the both of you. It is unfortunate, but Harry Potter accomplished his purpose in this life, and for that we must all be thankful. After all, there are greater threats afoot."

Once Ginny regained her senses, she had a brief, intense urge to rip the damn portrait off the wall and hex it into oblivion. It would solve absolutely nothing, of course, and it wouldn't have even made her feel better, but...

Well, it would have made her feel better for a moment.

Maybe it was petty, but she was suddenly glad she had no sherbet lemons to offer. A childish voice in the back of her head whispered 'so there,' and then she shoved it aside to focus on the portrait.

"Yep, greater threats. I can only guess you're going to tell us what they are?"

It would have taken someone far less aware of the world than Luna pretended to be to not notice Ginny's mood. She reached over to hold her friend's hand. It wasn't to hold her back, though that would work if necessary. Ginny did need someone though, someone to be there without judging. At least, that's what Luna decided.

"Thank you, Headmaster, though perhaps your perspective is different but I'm not sure I'd agree that his sole purpose was to defeat Voldemort. It seems that one can have many purposes, or at least several." She glanced at her friend and smiled warmly, "Well, at least he brought friends closer together."

Turning back to the painting of the headmaster and the unicorn, she tilted her head, frowning slightly in an almost pout before chewing on her bottom lip. "And this threat is greater than Voldemort?"
