Anthony Goldstein ([info]ex_goldenrul25) wrote in [info]pandorarpg,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:^date: november 03 2003, character: anthony goldstein, character: justin finch-fletchley

Characters: Justin Finch-Finely and Anthony Goldstein
Setting: The stands of Hogwarts’ Quidditch Pitch, during the memorial alumni game
Summary: Even those who don’t ride brooms need something to after the memorial service. Two old acquaintances meet again.
Rating: Probably work safe

There were a million things Anthony should be doing with an afternoon off. He had promised Penelope he would investigate he hand. He should be heading to the library. While he was there, he should be looking into the nightmares that had been plaguing everyone’s sleep. In fact, that had been Anthony’s intention after the service. Surprisingly, he couldn’t bring himself to do any of that just yet.

He hadn’t been particularly close to Harry Potter. Even when Anthony was a member of the DA, they hadn’t interacted much. They were in different houses, had different interests and few close friends in common.

Yet, Anthony morned for the loss of Harry. More than he would have expected. Of course Anthony would feel sorrow over the death of a schoolmate. Of course, he would feel something for the death of an important historical figure. Anthony couldn’t figure out why it should effect him beyond that.

So it was that Anthony found himself sitting in the stands while the players suited up. Even after the charms cleared the seats of water, mud managed to gather around the hem of his dress robes. If he couldn’t focus on work, he could at least make himself useful if someone took a stray bludger. He stared out over the overcast field and tried to clear him mind.

Justin loved watching quidditch. He thought it was one of the most wonderful activities one could possibly be involved in - if only the sports part of it weren't a requirement. Unfortunately most people seemed to like that part, so Justin often contented himself with pretending to enjoy a good play as he watched the players and imagined altogether different types of play.

Which all, in essence, meant that he wouldn't have missed this game for the world. Not only did he know a couple of the players - in various states of dress/undress - but it was to honour Harry.

He made his way up into the stands and looked around for familiar faces to sit with. He spotted Anthony Goldstein, and smirked. He almost hadn't recognized him without his medi-wizard robes on! They hadn't really socialized much, even when they'd been in the DA together, but Justin had seen him a few times at St. Mungo's, and had immediately respected his old classmate's professionalism.

He did, however, think the bloke needed to smile a little ever now and then. Then again, for all Justin knew, the moment Anthony left St. Mungo's, he threw his clothes off and laughed madly, throwing his arms in the air and dancing to club music. Though even if he didn't, he should.

"Hey, Healer Goldstein, mind if I join you?" he said as he made his way down the aisle toward where Anthony sat. Justin rarely took no for an answer, after all.

At the words 'Healer Goldstein,' Anthony was halfway to standing. He was ready to sprint across the stands if there was someone in need. The rest of the sentence caused Anthony's momentum to awkwardly shift. He then recognized the voice.

"Oh. Mr. Finch-Finely. I didn't see you there." Anthony tried to act as if there wasn't anything awkward about him suddenly bolting up. The pink creeping up his pale neck to his cheeks betrayed him. In an attempt to cover himself, he drew his wand. "Let me dry a seat for you."

Justin rolled his eyes. "It's Justin. Only the butler's allowed to call me Mr. Finch-Fletchley, and that's because he won't stop no matter how often we ask him to call us by name. Sorry if I startled you, by the way," he added, thinking it to be the reason Anthony had stood up. He knew that he'd jumped a bit earlier when Ernie had come up behind him.

"Ooh, a gentleman," he teased with a smile. "Please do, kind sir."

He waited for Anthony to spell the seat dry and then sat down next to him and took a glance out at the pitch. "I haven't missed anything, have I?"

"Justin it is," Anthony said before casting the spell. "Please, feel free to call me Anthony. We're not at St Mungo's."

The pink from Anthony's face receded a little as he took his own seat; his back was upright as usual. It didn't go away completely though. He's never been particularly good at small talk. Mentally, he reviewed what little he knew about Justin.

"The game hasn't started just yet. The players must still be changing out of their robes." Anthony squinted back at the sky. Weather was usually a safe topic, or so Anthony had been led to believe. "At least the rain's no coming down hard. I'd hate for anyone to lose grip of their broom."

"It's times like this I wish I were an animagus - imagine being a fly on the wall of one of the changing rooms right about now?" he asked with a waggle of his eyebrows. "The best part about quidditch - the players."

He looked up when Anthony did and nodded. It was definitely misty, but thankfully nowhere near a downpour. "Well, if they did, we've someone here who can fix them right up again, now don't we. I almost didn't recognize you, to be honest. I don't think I've seen you out of the hospital since we were in school!"

Anthony had almost forgotten about Justin. Justin had frequently flirted with any witch that crossed his path even when at a friend's bedside. "Yes, some of them are rather fit," Anthony murmured almost inaudibly and hoped it would be left at that. He seized on the subject change.

"I do get out some, but I'm most at the hospital. It's a demanding job. Still, I find it very rewarding. And fascinating. Just the other day, I had the opportunity to trace an outbreak of Dragon Pox. It's amazing the way magical pathogens adapt."

"Well, if you're going to be married to a job, it might as well be one you love, right?" he said. Not that he knew anything about actually working for a living, but he believed that anything done should be enjoyed immensely, and applied this to work as well as anything else. "Just make sure you play every now and then, because all work and no play makes Anthony Percy Weasley."

Justin turned his head at a sound on the pitch, and was just in time to watch the players begin making their way onto the field. He watched to see who had decided to join, other than those that had replied to Alicia's journal entry.

"Looks like a few House Team players down there. Angelina, Alicia... oh, and that looks like Roger Davies!" He bit his bottom lip as he checked the bloke out from afar (of the three, he was the only one Justin hadn't shagged).

"What's wrong with Percy Weasley?" Anthony had never understood why people seemed to delight in mocking the man. "He did an admirable job keeping focus as Head Boy under difficult conditions."

He was distracted by the players' entrance as well. He tried to identify everyone from the distance of the stands. He spotted the group that Justin was watching. Anthony didn't know who exactly Justin was looking at, he assumed on of the ladies mentioned, but something about Justin's gaze made Anthony shift uncomfortably. He had the impression he was missing something. "You're correct. That is Davies."

Had he not been distracted, Justin would definitely have enjoyed the fact that Anthony had defended Weasley rather than balking at the comparison. He personally had nothing against the bloke, he just thought Percy was the perfect example of what happened when a person became so consumed in their work that they forgot that life had to be lived, too.

"And a couple of other fit blokes I don't remember seeing before," he said, momentarily caught up in his thoughts. "The more the merrier, I say. Nice to see Roger all grown up, though. I had such a" crush "admiration for him back in school. Too bad he was on Ravenclaw."

Speaking of which, he suddenly remembered the bloke sitting next to him and had the grace to look sheepish at his deviation. "Not that there's anything wrong with Ravenclaw," he added with a grin.

For a moment, Anthony became distracted by his own past 'admiration' of Davies. Much of his confusion around his fifth year was the direct result of Roger Davies and others like him. Popular, handsome boys that stirred something in Anthony he didn't have a name for at the time. For a moment, Anthony was transported back to Fifth year and all the confusion and excitement.

"What? Right. Ravenclaw." Anthony's words practically tripped over themselves falling out of his mouth. "A noble house. All of them, noble houses. Hufflepuff too, of course." Snapped back to the present, Anthony kept his gaze firmly forward. Again, his body betrayed him. If he had been pink before he was practically red now.

Justin noticed the flush to Anthony's cheeks and grinned, seeing someone that would be easy to embarass. As Bianca, Jasper and Ernie could attest, Justin loved saying or doing things to bring that flush to the fore, however, he couldn't quite figure out what it was he'd said that would have done so. He was being rather tame and civil, for Justin that was.

He spotted a flash of red hair joining the others and smiled, though it trained his mind on why they were there. "Good girl, Ginny. Poor thing must be heartbroken. I bet Harry would have loved to be here for this, get on his broom and play for old time's sake. He was brilliant on the pitch."

For a moment, the flash of red hair disturbed Anthony. He let the feeling go. Ginny Weasley was hardly the figure Anthony had seen only out of the corner of his eye during a nightmare. He refused to let it affect him in the light of day.

Besides, Justin was right. Harry would have loved this. Anthony realized that this was probably a more fitting memorial. It wasn't for The Boy Who Lived, but rather for a boy who lived. What could be more fitting than celebrating life?

"Do you remember Harry's first game? I didn't have any hope for him at first. Being the youngest player is impressive, but when he lost control of the broom and it seemed like his Quidditch career was over before it could begin." Anthony grinned. "I thought Slytherin would riot after he caught the snitch in his mouth."

Justin felt a thrill of victory at the grin on Anthony's face. He'd always loved putting smiles on people's faces, especially those who were too shy or serious to do so as often as he felt they should.

"He was a fighter even then," he said with a nod. "And don't mention him catching the snitch that way - I can still feel Ernie smacking me for saying something about balls in his mouth, or some such thing." He unconsciously rubbed at his shoulder where he'd been hit all those years ago.

"Was more terrifying in third year, though. Remember the Dementors? Watching him fall off his broom and all. And those Slytherin arses trying to scare him down below. They really knew how to take things too far, didn't they."

"Why would he smack you for...? Oh. Right." Anthony was clearly out of practice dealing with innuendo. Of course he had heard worse before, but had emerged from his professional world so rarely in recent months that it took him of guard. At least he managed to not turn red this time.

"The Dementors were horrible. It's a wonder with everything that happened that anyone could remain childish enough to care about house rivalries. Of course, Harry showed those Slytherins something. They fell over themselves when Harry cast the Patronus Charm.

"Well, many of us have fallen back on House rivalries and regretted it later," he said with a shake of his head. "I still feel bad about turning on Harry in fourth year. It's just, we were so proud of Cedric for showing that Puffs aren't all a bunch of duffers, you know?"

He lifted his feet and rested them on the bench in front - which thankfully wasn't presently occupied.

"Didn't mean we should have been mad at Harry. Made up for it the next year, though." He playfully and lightly poked his elbow into Anthony's arm. "Join the DA, get beaten up by girls!" he said as if quoting an advertising slogan.

"I can understand that. I was convinced that Harry had put his name in the goblet myself." It seemed the most reasonable explanation at the time. He hadn't actively campaigned against Harry like some, but he did vocally support Cedric Diggory. The more he reflected on it, the more the whole thing seemed juvenile.

Anthony raised an eyebrow when Justin poked him. Very dryly, but with a trace of humor, he said, "I suppose most of us were confused what being hit on by the girls would entail."

Justin nodded, glad he wasn't the only one who wasn't proud of his actions that year. Though in the end, they'd all overcome their differences and worked on the same side. That had to account for something.

He grinned and put on a smug look. "Speak for yourself - I was perfectly willing to get beat up by girls if it meant I could get a peek at their knickers when lying on the floor." He laughed and patted Anthony on the back. "You know, you're alright Goldstein."

And with that, it was decided in Justin's mind that he'd acquired a new friend - which frankly meant that Anthony would probably never be rid of him. It also meant that whatever guard he put up was going down quickly.

"So, did you? Get hit on by the girls, I mean. Or any of the blokes, for that matter?" he asked with a wink.

Anthony blinked at the sudden hand on his back. He had never been a physical person and close contact was reserved for close friends. It's not Anthony minded. He simply didn't know what to do with himself. He opted to keep sitting with his back straight.

"No, girls never took much interest in me. Well, Lisa Turpin did for a time, but that worked itself out. As for boys, I never had much luck. For a bit during sixth year I had was seeing a younger Ravenclaw, but that ended when his parents took him away at the end of the year."

Anthony's tone was casual. Well, casual for Anthony. He was a private person, and didn't often talk about his romantic interests. Still, he never led about them either.

Justin nodded, taking the words in stride, only making note of the genders so that his mind was reassured that he would not have his bollocks hexed off for being more 'open' with his personal options.

"Sorry to hear that it didn't work out," he replied genuinely. "I've never been one for relationships, probably because I've seen what a toll they can take. Better to just have some fun for a bit of time, rather than get my heart broken by someone who tries to change me."

He shrugged. "It must've been a fun one, though. Two Ravenclaws, seekers of knowledge... bet you snuck into the Restricted Section from time to time, eh? I've always wondered if there was some sort of wizard version of the Kama Sutra."

"Yes. Well, there was a bit of experimentation." The statement was true, but deliberately vague. The reality was more awkward exploration than titillating adventure. They had even compared notes at the end. The whole affair hadn't lasted long enough to be a proper relationship anyway.

Anthony shifted his weight nervously. He had no idea how the conversation had taken this turn. He turned his attention back to the pitch. "Look, they're forming up. I think the game is about to get started."

Still, something Justin said peeked Anthony's curiosity. There was a bit of knowledge to be gained, and Anthony hadn't been a Ravenclaw for no reason. "Kama Sutra? Obviously it's a muggle text, but what is it?"

Justin's mind latched on readily to the idea of experimentation, but was brought back to reality when Anthony mentioned activity on the pitch. He watched as Alicia grabbed up a quaffle and took off into the air. "Good girl, Ally. Back in the saddle... she hasn't played in ages, but I think she'll be all right."

A slow, lascivious smile came over his face at Anthony's question. He kept his eyes trained on the quidditch players as he answered. "The whole Sutra is a Hindu guide to living, but most people forget that and concentrate on one chapter that's dedicated to sex and the various possible possitions and techniques one can use to please a partner." An unconscious lick to his lip. "Some versions even come with pictures, too, to help 'visualize' better, or some such thing."
