Shopping trip.
Characters: Bianca and Hannah
Setting: The Leaky Cauldron, then various shops. Thursday October 30th, in the morning.
Rating: Worksafe
Summary: The girls go shopping for costumes for the Halloween gala

Bianca was almost habitually punctual. Too early or too late called too much attention and so she frequently arrived just on time. That day was no different. She dressed warmly, making sure to wear thick pantyhose under her dress, so she wouldn't have to rely on warming spell. Then she hurried out, checking the time more than necessary as she made her way to the Leaky Cauldron.

Luckily it was after breakfast and before lunch when she arrived, so the crowd was sparser than usual. She made her way over to the bar, looking to see where Hannah was. If she had to ask, she would, but she rather hoped the other woman would show without her having to do so. She might have just been in the back or upstairs, in which case Bianca was sure she wouldn't have to wait long at all.

Because Bianca was nervous and tired. She'd been awakened by a terrible nightmare and couldn't get back to sleep. Worse, she couldn't shake her feelings of dread or the worry that it wasn't just a dream, but that it was a vision of something to come.

Hannah had just barely taken the time to get ready that morning. She felt disheveled after the dream she'd had, a dream that had felt so real, Hannah had to fight the urge to beg Ernie not to go into work that morning. Worry tugged at the corners of her mind as they had separated to get ready for their individual days. She knew she was going out into the Muggle world, but she just felt the need to be close to Ern today so she put on her Hufflepuff quidditch tee that he had given her one year for Christmas. She also dawned a Muggle jacket that was long enough that it could serve the dual purpose of a wizarding robe.

At least she had shopping with Bianca to look forward to. Her friend could always be counted on for friendly conversation. Hannah forced a smile onto her face and bounded down the steps. The morning crowd was thinner than normal so she had not problem locating the young woman. "Ready to go," she forced her voice into a happy lilt.

Bianca was debating a warm and fortifying cup of tea when Hannah showed. It was a good thing, because Bianca wasn't at all certain that she'd have managed to keep anything in her stomach at all. She was saved from discovering that the hard way and turned to greet Hannah. "I'm ready as well. I like your shirt," she added, smiling just a little. Her smiles was as shaky as Hannah's voice though.

She made for the exit, consciously avoid other people as the made for the muggle side of London. "Hannah, can I ask a question? Did...did you sleep well last night?" It wasn't like Bianca to rush straight to the point, but when her visions if it had been) were concerned she rarely dilly-dallied.

Hannah's stomach growled as the scent of freshly fried eggs floated on the air. Normally, she would have had breakfast long before now. However, she hadn't much of an appetite this morning. She had made some tea in the hour or so just before dawn and had used it to try to calm her own nerves.

As they exited out onto the street Hannah noted that the dreariness of the sky matched her mood. "I didn't get as much sleep as I normally do," she said plainly not wanting to give voice to the fears that had plagued her all night. Each time she'd closed her eyes to try and sleep again the vivid image of the Dark Mark hovering over Ernie's lifeless body had flashed across her mind.

"It wasn't because of a nightmare, was it," Bianca asked in a rush, as though she were afraid that if she slowed down, she'd lose her nerve. "Terrible ones, dead frightening, I mean? Felt almost real?" She was actually hoping Hannah would say no, that this strange occurrence wasn't as wide-spread as she was beginning to fear it was.

She didn't want to be looking for frightening things around every corner. She was a timid person by nature, certainly, but it wasn't as though she delighted in being so nervous. Really, she wanted to just go home and bake something and not dwell on it at all.

Hannah stopped in her tracks. "You had them, too?" She looked at her friend and allowed a mixture of relief and fear flood onto her face. Knowing that others had experienced the dreams made her feel better and worse all at the same time. At least now Hannah knew she wasn't going crazy. However, what if someone or something had caused the phenomenon?

She looked ahead and noticed a bench a few feet ahead of them. Taking the necessary strides, Hannah sat down before her knees weakened underneath her. "I don't want to go back to the fear," her voice cracked. Why was it that just as everything was finally heading toward a beautiful future there had to be an incident that marred it all.

Bianca hurried behind Hannah and sat down next to her. "Yes," she said quietly. Hearing Hannah's response felt like someone had just reach in and twisted her stomach at both ends. It couldn't possibly be coincidence now. Something had to have been going on.

Bianca wrapped one arm around Hannah's shoulders, her own face lined with worry. "I don't either. But if something's happening I'd rather know that be in the dark about it all, wouldn't you? I don't know what's happening Hannah, but I'm sure something is. We're not the only ones who had crippling nightmares last night."

Shopping was supposed to be something that would get her mind off the nightmare. "I suppose your right," she nodded. She looked at Bianca when she said others had experienced the night mares as well. She had only spoken so far to Seamus and of course she knew that Ernie had experienced them as well.

Taking a deep breath she stood, "I'm sure it's something that will pass in the next few days. Perhaps someone just pulled some regional prank in honor of Halloween. "So, where would you like to look first?" She stood now that she had a slightly better grip on her nerves.

Bianca nodded, her face filled with concern. But then Hannah stood and did her best to shake it off. Bianca tried the same. Maybe focusing on shopping would help distract them both. "Well...I was thinking of going as something. You know not just a fancy dress or robe because I can't quite afford that at the moment. But I can put together enough red and black and polka dots to go as a ladybug!"

She glanced down the street at some of the places boasting muggle costumes and selected one at random. "Let's start with here. If I find what I like quickly, we might even have time to have lunch." Assuming they could eat by then.

Hannah was a natural worrier. However, one of the things she had been working on was trying her best to hide that worry. She knew that the more upset she was about things the more distracted Ernie would be on the job, and that could be dangerous.

"That sounds cute," Hannah forced a smile trying her best to make it genuine. She loved cute costumes and would have tried to come up with something as equally cute herself were it not for the fact that Ernie wanted to go in traditional wizarding garb.

"I just thought, well, I do like ladybugs and it's probably the only way I'll wear something red." Red was too flashy a color, not just because Bianca was shy. Her hair was red and she didn't think it wise for a redhead to wear red and have the various shades be in competition. "I'm a bit nervous about going, but I'll have my camera so it should be too- oh! Look at these wings1" Bianca immediately found a cute pair of ladybug wings and went right for them.

It was helping. Focusing on shopping for a costume was helping her to not think about the terrible dream. Nightmare. Because now that she knew other people had had them, she'd begun to discount the possibility that it was a vision instead. Just a terrible nightmare.

"Those are pretty," Hannah cooed over the wings. Nearby she noticed a bumblebee costume that would have been absolutely adorable. Of course she would have made the skirt a bit longer. "Too bad Ern wants to go in traditional garb." She ran her fingers lightly against the fabric of the costume and was amazed at how soft it was. Usually Muggle costumes were more coarse.

However, it did give her inspiration for the dress. She also pondered whether she should grab up this cute little outfit for later. Besides, changing into something fun after being at a stuffy Ministry event might help alleviate some of the tension she was certain would be around after the event. Even though Ern was supposedly not working, she knew that after last night (and events she had yet to learn about) they would both need something light hearted to focus on.

The bumblebee costume was adorable, and Bianca said as much to Hannah. Suddenly she wished she'd thought of having someone else dress as another bug - a bee or butterfly - and attend with her. It was too bad Hannah had other plans; Bianca didn't have an enormous pool of friends to choose from to ask that sort of thing.

She ventured forth the thought shyly anyhow, "It would have been nice if you could have gone as the bee and me the ladybug, yeah? Well, maybe some other time," she conceded. She passed up two different ladybug costumes for being far too sexy for her comfort level. However, she noticed a dress further towards the back that caught her eye. "I think I'll try on this one," she said, holding it up.

Hannah put down the bumblebee costume. The idea of getting that on top of a dress was simply silly. If she had a Muggle engagement to attend to she would have definitely bought it. But as it was she only had the Ministry gala to think of since Constance had obviously taken on trick-or-treater duties at her childhood home.

"That will make a very classy ladybug along with these," she picked up a pair of black tights that were sure to fit Bianca. "What color shoes will you wear?"

Bianca gestured to the black tights she was already wearing. "Thanks but I've got these and another pair at home; I won't need to buy another, but It's a good idea to wear them. I'd be chilly and feel a little under-dressed without them." She lay the dress she'd chosen over her arm, liking it even more as she held it. "Shoes...I don't know. Maybe black or red flats? Or, if I can't find a pair already in existence, I could charm them spotted like a ladybug! Little spots though, I wouldn't want to over do it."

The effort to keep up conversation was less straining now; Bianca was feeling quite a bit better, and even starting to get a bit hungry. She'd probably be able to eat lunch after all.

Hannah completely understood using what you had rather than buying something new. She didn't have much money herself for purchasing a dress and probably would have just pulled something out of the closet were tomorrow's event a generic party. However, this was the first time Ernie was taking her to an event at his job and she wanted to look nice.

"I think you ought to wear black flats," she offered. "That way you look like you have ladybug legs." She couldn't remember seeing a ladybug with red feet.

Bianca considered that and then nodded. "I've a pair of black flats at home I could wear." She could always charm them a bit, test out how they'd look red or with polka dots, just in case the all black legs were too stark for her. "Let me try this on and then we can leave and look for something for you, yeah?"

Bianca wouldn't take long, getting into the dress. It fit rather well actually; it actually suited her ear-shape quite well. Enamoured, Bianca decided definitively to purchase it.

While Bianca tried on the dress, Hannah did a bit of browsing. The shop was definitely all costumes and had nothing that she could consider traditional witches wear for a formal event.

"So, you've found your attire for tomorrow?" Hannah inquired knowing from the look on her friend's face that indeed she had. "Did you see that dress shop we passed?" Hannah inquired while they headed toward the register. With the exchange rate Hannah knew she would likely have a better chance of purchasing something fancy on this side of the Leaky. "Let's stop in there before we head back."

Bianca was positively beaming. "definitely," she nodded going to have it rung up. As Hannah mentioned the other store, Bianca nodded again, remembering which she meant. "Yes, let's. It looked like there might be some nice things there."

Her dress carefully wrapped and paid for, Bianca exited the shop with a smile, heading back towards the one Hannah wanted. The thought of nightmares had been pushed to the corners of her mind now, her smile genuine.

Hannah was rather enjoying her morning. She was glad there was something on her schedule as the dreams would likely have driven her mad if Hannah had been home alone all morning.

Once they were out the door, the two women made quick work of their trip to the Muggle boutique. "Oh these are all so pretty," she cooed looking over a rack near the door. However none of them seemed to yell at her to buy them. That was until her eyes landed on the perfect dress.

The dresses Hannah stopped to look at were gorgeous. Bianca wasn't as fond of the pink one, but the blue was stunning. The green, however, she very nearly fell in love with then and there.

"Hannah these are all so pretty! Which one will you try on?" She hadn't yet noticed her friend's attention had wandered to yet another dress.

The dress that had caught Hannah's eye was on the next rack over. She could only see a bit of the full skirt hanging out from between the others, but something about it just screamed that it was her dress. Most likely it was the draw of the colors. Hannah had always found that her house colors suited her well. Not to mention that the dress she was headed toward fit the bumblebee theme from the other store.

She reached out and took the dress from where it hung and held it against her front. "Isn't it beautiful?" she swished it back and forth while scanning the shop for a dressing room.

Bianca finally realised where Hannah's attention had gone and she let out a sound of appreciation. "Oh. Oh Hannah, that's perfect. You have to try it on, straightaway." She looked around and saw some curtained off areas that had to be dressing rooms. "Over there, I think."

Eager to see what the dress looked like on her friend, Bianca hurried them both over to the dressing rooms. "Let's see it then."

Hannah headed in the direction Bianca led. Moments later she walked out wearing the dress.

"Do you think Ernie will like it?" she asked as she twirled. Hannah thought it was absolutely gorgeous but wasn't sure if it was something that would turn Ern's head.

Bianca reached out to trail fingers along the soft material. "the more important question is, do you like it?" Bianca returned the question with her own. It was clear Bianca herself liked it on Hannah.

"If you do, then you should get it. You'll look wonderful at the gala." Bianca didn't doubt Ernie would like it, especially if Hannah herself did.

The dress felt smooth against Hannah's skin. She knew it would be just as comfortable to wear as it was lovely. She also knew that Ernie would likely not care what it was she wore to the event. She could charm a burlap bag into the shape of a dress and he would likely tell her she was beautiful. Okay, so it wasn't Ernie she was looking to impress, it was his co-workers. She knew how much importance he put on his job and she so wanted to convey that sentiment to his bosses.

"I do think it is marvelous," she beamed and for the first time looked at the price. She gave a sharp intake of breath when she saw how much it would put her back. Still, it was worth every penny and she could only imagine how much such a dress would have cost were she to try to get one of similar quality in Diagon Alley.

Bianca saw Hanna wince at the price tag and twisted her lips. "Oh, its not terribly expensive it it?" Bianca had had that sort of heartbreak before. Falling in love with a beautiful dress, only to then see the price tag and not be able to go home with it.

The worst part was that once you fell in love, sometimes there was no such thing as a runner-up. Bianca fervently hoped that wasn't the case here.

Hannah had gone back into the dressing room and changed. She did love the dress and knew that no matter how hard she might look she would not find another that she would want after having tried this one on.

"I've got enough to cover it," she assured her friend and made her way to the cashier's counter.

Happy that Hannah had found her dress, Bianca followed her to the cashier while she paid. "I think the only part of it I'm really looking forward to is the costume. Oh and seeing some friends too..." The rest of it, the grandness, the crowds - it wasn't her scene. She'd much rather just stay home add perhaps bake some orange-and-cranberry scones.

Once the purchase was rung up, Bianca smiled at Hannah. "So should we go back to the Leaky?" Their shopping excursion was done, after all.

Hannah hoped that the gala would be a grand event. She knew they could all use a wonderful carefree night after the dreams of the night before. As the clerk went to the back to bag the dress, Hannah noticed the clock on the wall. "We definitely need to get back. My shift will be starting in a little over an hour."

Once the employee returned with the dress, Hannah gave a nod of thanks and turned to head back toward the Leaky.
