a confrontation
Who: Ginny and Zacharias. Ernie later on.
What: Going toe-to-toe
When: November 2nd, around 9:00 AM
Where: Zacharias's flat
Rating: Worksafe

Early the next morning, Ginny again found herself going through the motions of a normal, daily routine. She ended up clean and dressed and sitting at the kitchen table, where mum had indeed cooked up a storm, just like both she and Percy thought she would. Manic cooking was how she had dealt with her grief after Fred's death; no surprise, then, that Ginny ended up eating more than could possibly be considered reasonable for breakfast.

She couldn't wait any longer though. Not when The Prophet announced that Smith had been released due to lack of sufficient evidence. She drained off her cup of tea, finished off the last bite of pancake that she could possibly manage, and then... ended up helping mum around the house for a bit. She couldn't leave her alone so easily, not when she clearly needed hugs and consoling too.

Finally she managed to break away, muttering some excuse about needing to see Luna for a bit. She ended up in Smith's Muggle neighborhood a short while later (no, they had never been close and she had never had reason to visit him before, but the benefit of living in a small community was that everyone knew where everybody lived, lack of privacy be damned).

Wand in hand, she knocked on his door. Promised herself she would be patient. She would act rational. She wouldn't do anything anyone could regret.

Not at all.

At the first knock he rolled over, pulling his pillow over his head. The howler from his father before nine this morning was bad enough. Surely, owl post should have been banned in densely populated muggle areas. Stupid owls able to track him down even when he doubted his parents didn't know where he lived. However, the message was clear. His second day of headline news apparently was not something they were proud of.

Zacharias had hoped that the knocking would just stop and the person would leave him alone. Except it didn't stop. Scowl firm on his face he threw his covers off and padded across his flat to have words with the person at the door.

Fully awake, he wasn't the most pleasant person to deal with, still half asleep and annoyed at his parents, well, it wouldn't be him at his best. Zacharias pulled open the door, not bothering to look through the peep hole, "What do you want?" The words were out before he even had a chance to see the young woman standing on the other side.

Her fist shot out and connected solidly with his nose.

She promised herself she would be patient and rational. Wouldn't do anything anyone would have reason to regret, but the second she saw that pompous arse's stupid, upturned nose and arrogant expression, her mind seemed to wipe itself of any and all reason.

"Morning, Zacharias." When he staggered back, she took the opportunity to step into the flat. "I thought you and I might have a little chat about the, oh, what did you call it?" She readied her wand, gripped so tightly in her hand, her knuckles turned white. "That's right. The end of the fairy tale."

If he hadn't been awake before he certainly was now. "What the fuck?" His left hand flew right to his nose to check for damage. Even if it was broken, he wouldn't be able to tell himself, right now it just hurt. "Are you seriously that deranged?"

Stumbling backward into his flat, he reached blindly for his wand - never leaving it too far from his person. Or in this case the door. Zacharias scrambled for his wand. Once his fingers were wrapped around it, he shot the first hex that game to mind which was a disarming spell followed by one to push her backwards back through the door. "Get out of my flat."

Oh, please.

The disarming spell she knocked aside, though the second spell did push her against the door frame. She hadn't been in the DA for nothing and she certainly hadn't held her own against Bellatrix Lestrange only to be disarmed by some fourth year spell.

"You're calling me deranged?" She braced herself against the frame and tossed off a nasty hex. If it hit him, great. If not, well, he really didn't need the ugly furniture in his flat, did he? "Tell me about the end of the fairy tale, Smith. Who set you up? Who are you helping?"

He deflected her hex, his coffee table wasn't so lucky. They were making a lot of noise and early as it was, it probably wouldn't be long until one of his neighbors called the muggle police. And as much as he didn't care, he really didn't need a charge of magic in front of muggles on his record. When it became clear that she wasn't going to leave, he reached for her, forcefully tugging her into his flat, throwing her toward the ruined table. At least this way he could close the door behind her and not air everything to the world as it were.

"Yes! You're fucking insane." His voice was a harsh, intense whisper, not needing to add to the noise, but by no means calming. "I have neighbors! Ones who don't have a clue that we exist!" Zacharias wanted to hex her good. He might not have stayed to fight, but he wasn't useless with a wand. After all he had earned good marks in both Charms and DADA in the NEWT level.

"What more do you want? He's dead. Okay? Harry Potter, the boy who lived apparently doesn't live forever. Don't go hexing me just because you didn't get to shag like rabbits and have ugly fat ginger kids with poor vision."

"What the hell's wrong with you, you fucking sod?"

Something inside of her snapped. Disregarding the wand, she tackled Smith to the floor, aiming her knees for his groin and her hands for any part of his idiot face. She had grown up with six brothers; she wasn't afraid to take a hit if it meant she could get a few good ones in.

"Who talks like that? Who in their right mind talks like that to people?" She would claw his eyes out, she would draw gashes in his face. Whatever, maybe she was deranged. She didn't care. "You were found with his body! How are you involved?"

While Zacharias Smith had been in a few drunken brawls in his days this was different for a number of reasons. The most obvious being he was far too sober and more importantly this was a girl. Although she sure as hell was no lady. The wind was momentarily knocked out of him as he hit the ground with Ginny on top of him.

"Who in their right mind attacks people in their own home, you crazy bitch?" He shouted back at her, no longer feeling the need to keep his voice down. The door was closed now and there were no wands involved. He put his hands on her shoulder to keep her at a distance, using his legs for leverage to block the attack to his groin and to attempt to flip over so he was on top.

Maybe she would calm down if he could pin her. Or that could just set her off a bit more. Either way, he would have the upper hand, even if just for a moment. "That's right, I found his body. Is that what you want to hear? You want to hear about how I was covered in his blood like that would change anything?"

Somewhere, in the back of her mind, it registered that Smith said he had found the body. Found it. Before she could follow that thought to any logical conclusion, she was forced to start digging her heels into the floor to keep Smith from flipping her over.

"How were you involved?" Her eyes burned, wet and hot. "How? Tell me!"

Maybe she could choke him. Maybe she could claw his eyes out. She wasn't thinking clearly. Her hands scrabbled for anything and everything, whatever she could reach.

"You were covered in his blood?" Damp trails spilled down her cheeks. "So then how? How were you involved? Who involved you?"

Zacharias winced as she dug her fingernails dug into his skin, breaking it. But the pain was good. It gave him something other to focus on than the memory of Potter's blood all over him. It added another layer that wasn't just him being an arse and not talking about it by pissing people off.

"It doesn't change a damn thing!" He repeated and he knew it didn't because he knew he wouldn't have any closure if he had the full story of how Cedric died. It wouldn't bring him back. And at least with Potter, the truth would eventually will out - Cedric was never really given the courtesy.

Ginny might have been strong and determined, but he easily had a few pounds on her. He really didn't like being pinned down in his flat without sex being an obvious outcome. This time when he tried to flip them, he put his whole body into it, kicking one of her feet out in the process to disrupt her grip. "He's dead! Dead. Gone forever." He moved to slam her shoulders into the ground. "So get over yourself."

Her head banged against the floor and she was momentarily dazed. In a different circumstance, she might have gone limp, given herself a moment to calm down, and tried to recollect her reason. But Smith wasn't the right circumstance, and if anything, being flipped onto the floor by him just reignited her fighting spirit.

She lashed out, aiming for his face with her fist or her nails. Whatever connected first. "Answer my fucking question! Why won't you answer my question? How were you involved?"

Her wand was still tightly gripped in one hand. Eager to be out from under him, she blasted him with a hex would either fling him against the wall or the ceiling. Wherever the stupid bastard ended up.

"Who paid you off? Who were you helping? You couldn't hex your way out of a paper sack, so who set you up?"

At that close range and without his own wand to do a damn thing about, Zacharias Smith went flying backward. He skid over the remains of his coffee table, hitting the sofa hard enough that the world went splotchy for a moment. It hurt, but it was good. If he couldn't fuck, the feel of the fight might just tide him over.

"In what fucked up version of reality would I actually agree to murder for someone else? Or taking the fall?" His financial situation wasn't what it once was, but he would never be that desperate. Hell, he would sooner marry some idiot than kill a person for cash. The whole thing was an insult to his character and that bothered him just as much as everything else wrapped up in this disaster.

Zacharias pushed himself to reach for his wand. The adrenaline made his hands a little shaky, but he could hex his way out of a paper sack. And he was going to prove it too. Taking a steadying breath in he flicked his wand and silently cast oppugno to send the loose objects - largely the table remains - flying at her.

Bloody hell.

She had just gotten onto her feet when the pieces of table flew at her. With no time to throw up a shield spell, she ended up deflecting a table leg with her arm.

Which hurt like fucking hell.

"So, what? What?" She picked up the stupid table leg and hurled the fucking thing at his head, using nothing but the force of her own throwing arm. "You just happened to walk in on his dead body? How convenient, Smith."

But what if it were true?

It couldn't be. It couldn't. That would mean that everything had been entirely senseless and pointless and... no. No!

"Who the hell's going to believe that, huh?" She sent a nasty hex flying towards his face. Bloody up his already bloody nose a little bit more.

He couldn't help but smirk as the table hit her. It didn't make up for ruining it and not in the fun way, but it did feel good to know that it could be useful.

"Well, I was actually hoping to have a bit of go in the back with a wonderfully dressed young woman." Zacharias wiped the blood from his face, pushing back onto his feet now. Might as well stand and take it like a man. "But then I was like, well damn, what doesn't get you going like a bit of blood?"

It was sarcasm at it's worst. Any hopes of having sex had been entirely crushed in an instant. The irony of it was the physical altercation with the never-going-to-be-Mrs Potter was actually getting his blood going. Apparently, Zacharias Smith could be not only a coward, but a little bit twisted.

"You fucking- you miserable-" She flicked her wand with more force than necessary, casting one of her most treasured destruction spells.

Reducto.

The windows exploded in a shower of twinkling glass and splintered frame. Hopefully no Muggle was on the street to get caught in the downpour, but she'd worry about that later. For now... for now...

She tackled Smith, slamming his head into the floor, fists going for his face again. She would break his nose, she would break it so no healer in the world could fix it, she would-

"You want a bit of blood, Smith?" She smacked him hard. Satisfying. "How do you want it then? How?"

After waking up from a much better sleep after a terrible nightmare, Ern still felt a bit off. He had already decided what he needed to have done later in that day. It was supposed to be a low-key day but he had a hard time staying still. The flat was far too quiet. Hannah and Justin were out of the question for now, and he didn't want to bother Jasper any more than he already did. He then remembered Zacharias' situation... Maybe he should stop by to check in on him? He knew that they did have their differences, but Ern felt a measure of pity for him, and he did live with the git for seven years and knew him for longer. After apparating over Ern felt at least somewhat conflicted with his feelings of responsibility and the knowledge that Zacharias would likely not take his visit very well...

He stood outside of the building where Zacharias lived for a good minute, feeling somewhat conflicted as to whether he should even bother or whether he should continue to correspond with him over the journals. It was then he noticed a window shatter. "Merlin," he said drawing his breath in surprise. It looked like it was Zacharias' flat. In a matter of moments he had apparated himself to the front door of his former classmate's flat, and listened to several thuds and a very angry sounding... Witch?

Wand at the ready he quickly and silently went for the door, and saw a figure on top of what had to be Smith. "Mobilicorpus." He pointed his wand at the figure in an effort to extract her.

As Ginny had tackled him back toward the ground, bodily holding him down he let go just a little. For just a moment all that other crap was just pushed away, pulling him right into the moment. Bucking up toward her, apparently, this was exactly how he wanted it.

Then all too soon it was over. And white hat Ernest bloody Macmillan was at his door ruining everything. Just when it was getting good too.

"What the hell Macmillan?" he shouted, pressing his eyes closed. Zacharias slumped back toward the floor, a bit deflated, but whole body still pulsing with that want, that need.

"Is this how you want it? Like this?" She heard herself say the words over and over again, while trying to smack him senseless, smack him unconscious, while trying to unhinge him, undo him in some way.

Any way.

Her hands scrabbled to other place, his hair, his stupid shirt, anything, and then suddenly she was pulled bodily off him, left floating ridiculously in the air.

"Macmillan?" She turned her head, saw a shocked Ernie standing in the door. "Ernie? Ern..." Her breath left her suddenly. "Why... what are you...?" Her expression darkened. "This isn't for you, Ernie. Go away."

"Merlin--Ginny?" Ernie exclaimed in surprise, almost dropping Ginny when he finally realized who she was. "What are you doing here?" His voice betraying his sense of utter shock. His eyes briefly surveyed the wreckage of Zacharias' flat: the broken furniture and window, the blood everywhere, before returning to Smith and Ginny and surveying their damage.

He didn't quite understand Zacharias' irate greeting, but he never often fully understood the bloke. And even if that were possible, it could just be that he's lost enough blood that he has gone delirious. "Are you alright, Smith?" He asked his question as he moved in towards him.

Yes, he wanted to scream. Give me more. Instead it came out as an escaped whisper. He wanted it, maybe even wanted her. Zacharias Smith would take whatever she would give him. Even if it consumed or killed him, just to get out of his own head. Had it been anyone else at the door, he might have kept going for it, but of course it was him.

Virgin boy extraordinaire coming toward them both. Not the worst mood killer of the past couple of days, but certainly up there.

"Don't touch me," he said to Ernie, "Don't even touch me." Zacharias sat up, the world feeling a little bit woosey now.

Still she hung in air. Maybe she could have let herself down, certainly she could have continued fighting, but the shock of having someone walk in on the proceedings...

Her hands had been scrabbling, chasing at his hair, his shirt, at other places...

The shock of having someone- and not just anyone, but Ernie Macmillan, of all the possibilities- break it up at that moment. Her face reddened, in anger, embarrassment, or something else, she wasn't sure. And so she hung there, not bothering to break the spell.

"Go away, Ernie." She couldn't shake her own breathlessness. "You shouldn't be here. Go away."

Figuring that Ginny wasn't going to be cooperative (and was actually rather hostile) Ernie first dealt with her, lest he find himself at the receiving end of a hex. "You're alright Ginny?" He asked, aiming a disarming and binding spell at her before floating her down. "I'm sorry I have to do this, but I'd rather you not do something you'd regret."

He turned his attention back to Smith, who looked really bad, and apparently was speaking nonsensically and was very paranoid. It was fairly normal for things like that to happen after being attacked. "Zacharias, it's alright. I won't touch you, but you do need medical attention right away," he explained in a gentle and calm voice.

It was the tone more than anything that just caused him to lose it. Zacharias snapped. No way was he going to be treated like some helpless victim here. "Get the hell out of my home, Virgin Boy!" Zacharias pushed Ernie away from him, stumbling onto his feet. "Why are you even here?"

Zacharias threw his hands up before putting some space between them. "Merlin!" While he might look like an adult, he could still throw a bit of a tantrum with the best of them. "Just. Get. Out!" He kicked the sofa as he passed into the kitchen so he could wash his face.

The fight drained out of her right then. Between being disarmed and bound with her hands behind her back and then Smith petulantly kicking furniture and stomping off, there was nothing left to do or say.

She had come looking for a fight and she had gotten one. No more, no less.

"What now-?" She almost said 'Virgin Boy' but caught herself in time. "You going to turn me in, Ernie? Going to have me arrested for kicking his arse? The git deserved it." She frowned, envisioned slamming Smith's head into the floor with a satisfying crack. "You know he did. You know it."

Ern was a bit startled by Zacharias' behaviour, but it didn't seem completely beyond normal. Upon being called "Virgin Boy", he was about to revert back to their days at Hogwarts and retort with a flustered protest, but he had used a professional tone previously and was determined to be professional. And plus, Ginny was still there and she spoke.

"I can't leave you here," Ernie said, not answering her question. "Not like this to leave you to something you'd regret. Even if he does deserve it." He wasn't even going to get into the argument about whether he thought Zacharias done Harry in or not.

Ern dug around in his robes pockets until he found a small bag and took a bit of Floo Powder, and after briefly explaining the situation, asked for the DMLE dispatcher to get an officer to Zacharias' address. They agreed with him and said that someone would promptly be over. "Someone will be over in a minute," he informed Ginny and took to leaning against a wall that wasn't obstructed by broken things.

Ginny rolled her eyes and sat back against a broken chunk of table. In the kitchen, she could hear Smith stomping around and apparently kicking things. Good. He could trash the rest of the dumpy little flat on his own then.

A few minutes later, an LEO walked through the door. Her glance went from Ginny to Ernie, before she pulled Ernie aside to have a private word with him. When she returned, she looked at Ginny with what appeared to be a mix of compassion and pity.

Well, great.

"Okay, Ms. Weasley, I'm going to take you in for a few hours." She helped Ginny to her feet. "You clearly need to calm down."

"Try not to break the rest of your flat, Smith," Ginny called toward the kitchen, before letting the officer lead her out.

Ern gave the LEO a bit of a brief on what was going on and handed over Ginny's wand. But it appeared that the LEO had news too. Ern felt his jaw drop and the bottom of his stomach plummet. "Isaiah Smith?" he asked again to verify, and the LEO somberly nodded. "Merlin," he whispered as he headed back into the flat.

He looked at Ginny for a moment with a thought if you only knew crossing his mind as she left with the LEO.

"Zacharias?" Ernie called into the flat as he headed back towards the kitchen. "I just wanted to talk to you for a moment," he said as he entered. "You should take a seat for this though."

Zacharias glanced out into the destroyed living room to see Ginny Weasley being led away from his flat. He didn't know how he felt at that moment. Everything was just a big jumble, the world slowly coming back into a harsh focus. "I thought I told you to leave." It was the immediate response as he took a breath and turned again to look at Ernie who was still in his flat.

"I don't want to file some nancy boy report you love and live by." Even in his tantrum he had heard what Ginny said. He did deserve. "So you can just go off, go save someone else, and what have you. I'm fine." He wasn't fine. He also was really trying to ignore the fact that Ernie had something to tell him that he probably didn't want to hear.

Were this another moment there might have been a joking insult, but all those fell short. Even if he didn't want to recognize it, Ernie wasn't going to let it go.

"Just say it," he said after a moment. "Whatever it is. Say it and get it over with." He didn't want to play nice, he didn't want any sort of lead up. Zacharias had no patience for that. He crossed his arms over his chest, subconsciously protecting himself for whatever he was about to be told.

Ernie was going tell Zacharias to sit down again but decided against it. He sighed, resigned to the fact that Smith was a stubborn git. But a stubborn git who will have to hear bad news.

"Zacharias, I'm really sorry but I've just been informed that your father, Isaiah Smith has passed away," he said, his voice clear and even. He swallowed, feeling a lump in his own throat. "He had been found this morning and the cause of death is murder."

The precursor of sorry nearly had him tune the rest of it out. Even if he had heard every single word, his brain refused to process any of it. It was just some big cosmic joke - only Macmillan wasn't particularly funny or really prone to jokes. "No," he said shaking his head. "I just had an howler from him this morning. Dead people don't send post."

He shook his head, starting across the kitchen not sure where he was going, but he couldn't stand still anymore. It was too much to be true. Seeing Potter's body was bad enough, but his dad? Murdered? The man was an arse and a horrible father, but Zacharias had never wanted him dead. Not really. So it was wrong. Ernie was wrong. It wouldn't be the first time. "That's not right, it was probably someone else. I mean what proof is there?"

Ernie sighed again, it was normal for people to deny things like that. "He could've sent it before," he offered weakly, again feeling awful that Zacharias' last communication from his father was a howler.

"I'm not mistaken--I've just gotten the news from Officer Young, the lady who had just come in for Miss Weasley." Ernie watched Smith with a mix of pity and sadness. Body. Merlin, he didn't even -- Body. Far too many bodies. But there was something useful in there. "St. Mungo's," he repeated it back, not needing the confirmation. His mind was already made up. Zacharias needed to go to St. Mungo's.

"Alright, yeah, I'll go. Prove that you're wrong." He didn't care about his own injuries, they were inconsequential. His face might have been a mess, but he needed to see. It wasn't real until then. Zacharias pulled out his wand and walked over to the open apparation point by the door. His flat was a mess, Ernie Macmillan was still in his kitchen and he wasn't in the best of state to apparate, but he didn't care. He needed to know and with a pop he was off.

"Smith," Ernie had barely gotten the word out of his mouth when the man was gone. "Oh Merlin," he said with a sigh, shaking his head. What a day. He had almost wished that he did't leave his flat, but he knew it was probably for the better.

He muttered the repairing spell to quickly patch up the window after taking a glance around to note if there were any muggles down below or in the area. He couldn't help but feel pity at that very moment for Zacharias. For a moment Ern debated with himself as to whether he'd follow him to St. Mungo's. He knew that Zacharias tended to act with (at his very best) contempt towards himself. But at the same time he needed someone. Anyone.

Resigned to that line of thought, Ern apparated to St. Mungo's to meet Zacharias at the morgue.
