Comfort and solace
Who: Dean and Ginny
What: Dean drops in on Ginny to see who she's dealing with the news
When: November 1st, around 1 pm
Where: The Burrow
Rating: Worksafe

Dean was never the sort of person to hold grudges. Years ago, back in school he and Ginny had dated and it seemed to him that in the blink of an eye after they broke up, she was with Harry. He could have been more hurt about that than he had been, but he was fond of them both and knew where their hearts - as well as his own - lay. So he remained close to them and over the years watched their on-again off-again relationship. Honestly he just wished they'd get it together and settle down. Now of course, they wouldn't get that chance, and the thought of that was, well, depressing. Dean was a bit of a romantic at heart, and that this had turned out this way were terrible.

He told Seamus and Justin where he was going and when he'd be back and headed over to the Burrow. He hadn't been there very often, but he knew the location well enough. Steeling himself for what would probably be a difficult conversation, he announced his presence so she knew he was there. He refused to show or feel pity, but he was damned prepared to be as supportive as he could be.

Ginny hadn't been totally lying when she told Percy and Hermione that she was going to lie down for a while. She did, in fact, lie down. She scribbled in her diary for a bit (old and stupid habits tended to linger far longer than they had any right to). She considered what, exactly, her next move ought to be.

Certainly she couldn't confront Smith that day. Not when a steady stream of visitors would continue to drop by the Burrow. No possible way that would work out. Patience wasn't her best virtue, but she was prepared to wait a day.

And anyway, a few minutes later, Dean came into her bedroom and she felt herself deflate a bit. Dean was solid. Dependable. Not the type to confront a murder suspect while half-raving mad.

"Hey." Luckily she had been sitting on the edge of her bed. Best not to appear totally pathetic. "You want something to eat or... something?"

Dean had no idea what Ginny's line of thought had taken her. He honestly simply felt that she could use a friend or two to talk to. Dean had left Seamus and Justin back at his flat, lunch started but not complete just yet. he had time to come back and just finished up before Lavender arrived, he was certain of that, but right now, his focus was on Ginny.

"Hey yourself, and no don't trouble yourself. I've got some lunch ready to cook at home." He hadn't intended to cook at all, but he'd been roused into it by the prospect of guests. "What about you? Should I pop down and get you anything? Glass of water? Something more solid? or stronger?"

Ginny managed to bark out something that sounded like a laugh. Almost. "You suggesting a drink then? It's not even the dinner hour."

The thought of drinking something with a bit of a kick was not entirely unpleasant. There was some halfway decent firewhiskey downstairs. Hell, it wasn't like she had any pressing social engagements to attend and if she ended up a little bit tipsy, people would overlook it on this day.

"Merlin, why the hell not?" She looked up at him. "We've some firewhiskey downstairs. Decent stuff. Bring it up and two glasses, why don't you?"

Dean gave her an impish smile. "I have it on good authority that it's after the dinner hour somewhere in the world," he replied. "I won't let you fall into the habit of it but a drink wouldn't really go awry at the moment, I think."

He headed back downstairs and as she'd asked, brought up the bottle and two glasses. He didn't intend to have much himself - he still had to be able to Apparate back home in time for their late lunch.

"Has anyone else come by yet? I don't expect I'll be your only visitor." He poured each of them a glass, and slid hers toward her.

She studied the content of the glass for a second, then knocked it back in one shot.

"Oh." Her eyes stung, watered, and she rasped, "Yeah, that's good." She set the glass down, looked back at Dean. "I really shouldn't get into the habit of this, but you know what? I think I might need a pub crawl real soon."

As for the other question...

"Yeah, there's been people in and out. I've avoided most of them, you know, I wasn't..." She ran a hand through her hair. "I wasn't his wife, you know? What are people going to say to me?"

Dean sipped at his own whiskey, going a great deal slower than Ginny was. "No you probably shouldn't but I think one night to let yourself not have to be overwhelmed by it all is perfectly fine."

He frowned at what she said next though. "What difference does that make? Even if you two didn't have something going off and on, you were close. Extremely close. The rest of his friends are getting condolences and visits. Why wouldn't you? People will say the same to you they would to anyone close to Harry."

"I don't know."

She considered pouring herself another glass of firewhiskey, but decided against it. She'd be no good to mum drunk, and the house would fill up with people before they knew it.

"It's just..." She stared into her empty glass. "It doesn't feel real. It feels pointless. Why bother winning?" She frowned. "No, don't answer that. But it's.... why bother? Why bother if, in the end, you get offed anyway? I don't know."

Maybe she did need another firewhiskey.

Dean's frown deepened and he couldn't help answering. "You know why bother. If he hadn't, where would we all be right now? But still...it's bloody horseshit, it is. Losing him now. There's no reason Harry should've made it through everything he did for this to happen now. But we can't think why bother - that's demeaning everything he's done for everyone."

He drank more and then shook his head. "Not that that makes dealing with his loss any better, I'm sure. Words can only do so much. Time helps, but even that doesn't seem enough." He was starting to ramble a bit now and simply said, "Like a bit of something to eat to soak up any of that? I don't expect you've eaten much if anything."

"I had some toast. I think I might have had some tea." She ran a hand through her hair. "I don't know. Maybe I could use a sandwich or something. I'm sure mum's made loads by now."

She didn't know much apparently, but that was fine. She had an excuse, at least for one day.

"I don't even know what to say. What am I supposed to say?" Another hand through her hair, then she looked up at him. "Hey. How's Seamus? Set the house on fire yet?"

Dean's frown disappeared into a small smile, ostensibly at the thought of Molly Weasley making mountains of sandwiches. "I'll bet she has. I can bring one up if you like?"

Dean chewed the inside of his lip at Ginny's question. "You don't have to say anything," he replied. "And for Seamus...he's doing fine. I've managed to keep him out of the kitchen on a permanent basis so no fires. And he wouldn't want to destroy all my art either so he's been keeping his pyrotechnics under control. He wanted me to ask after you too, you know."

"Oh?" The smallest of smiles flitted across her face at the thought of Seamus being banned from the kitchen on the grounds of being a pyromaniac. "Well, tell him I'm doing... tell him..."

No sense in lying to any of them.

"Tell him I'm me. Just me." She shrugged. "I'll take of one those sandwiches if you're offering. There might even be crisps down there."

"I will," Dean replied, standing. "Give me a minute, yeah? I'll be right back." Dean headed back down again, and took a few minutes to collect a sandwiches and a plate of crisps. Of course, he was obliged to chat with whatever Weasleys were hanging about and so he took a bit longer to return than he wanted.

"Your mum wanted to send up a whole turkey, I expect, and an entire sack of potatoes. I managed to talk her down to just the one sandwich and crisps." Dean offered her a smile and set the plate down in front of her.

"Thanks."

She stared at the food for a minute, realized she had absolutely no appetite, and honestly, when it came down to it, why was she attempting to be up and about at all?

Bugger that. The world could wait.

"Hey, Dean?" She looked up at him. "Thanks for coming. Really, I do appreciate it. And now?" She glanced at her pillow, then back at him. "I really think I need to make the world go away for a while. Just for a while, okay?"

Without waiting for a reply, she stretched out on her bed. "I'll be back to myself eventually, but I think I've called the right to hide for the moment."

Dean recognised a plea to be alone when he saw one and he wasn't about to deny Ginny's wishes. He stood, leaving over to rest a gentle hand on her arm. "I understand. If you need me though, you know where to find me. I'll be keeping an eye on you," he added.

She had already stretched out, dismissing him, and she he stood to go. "Get some rest, if you can," he added, and then headed out. He still had lunch to finish cooking.
