Who: Hannah Abbott and OPEN to ALL
What: Free Drinks in Memory of Harry
When: Saturday, November 1, 2003 8:00 pm
Where: The Leaky Cauldron
Rating: Depends on who all joins and what language they use

After the shock of the Prophet's morning news sunk in, Tom had spent all morning retelling the story of Harry's first trip to Diagon Alley a little over twelve years ago. To have been a fly on the wall of the Leaky that day one would have heard all kinds of tales of interactions with Harry Potter over the years. Some were true, many were not. Many spoke as if they had lost their best friend, their own kin, the savior of their world.

Hannah had gotten word earlier that morning that her shift would be extended by at least two hours. In a way she was glad, not only would she make a few extra tips but she would be able to push back what was likely to be an uncomfortable encounter later in the evening. For now though, she watched as the hour Tom had set for the memorial approached. She didn't think the old bar keep had thought about the marketing genius behind the idea, but Hannah noted it. Many had shown up early for a spot of food and would stay well past the end of the hour to continue drinking.

At about a quarter til eight, Hannah was in the back room completing the spellwork necessary to ensure that the glasses were continually filled and continually washed in order to keep up with the demand that was certain to take up her time for the next hour or so.

Alicia sat in a corner booth, a line of shot glasses in front of her, all but the last one emptied and turned over. If it weren't for the line, she wouldn't be able to remember just how much she'd had to drink. While she was often able to keep up with Angie, the drink was hitting her harder now than ever before, likely because she hadn't eaten anything all day.

She felt sick, but honestly didn't know if it was because of the alcohol, or because of the pervasive feeling of wrongness that simply hadn't gone away since she'd seen the news about Harry.

She took a deep breath, then downed the last shot glass. There, time to order more.

Hannah had been running around like a crazy person, but she wasn't complaining. For the first time all day she had actually felt normal. It about five til nine and the last round of drinks was going out just as quickly as Hannah was sending the empty rounds to the back. When she got to one of the corner booths, Hannah recognized Alicia Spinnet, former Gryffindor Quidditch player and regular drinking buddy of Angelina Johnson. The woman looked as if she didn't need another drink. Several people had looked that way tonight, but Hannah figured that having been an actual teammate of Harry's that the witch before he was probably taking things harder than most of the other patrons in the pub.

Assessing the situation, Hannah decided that she would try to talk the other witch up for the next five minutes until the time frame on the free drinks was over. Then she could use the wizarding ordinance that strongly recommended cutting off patrons that were too sloshed. "Alicia, how are you holding up?" she engaged.

"Rather horribly," she answered honestly, but gave Hannah a discouraged look to cut the blow of her words. "I'm sort of torn. Do I have more to drink? Do I have something to eat and risk it all coming right back up? Or do I go home to my empty flat?"

She sighed. "Bugger that, I need a firewhiskey."

Hannah's day had not been the best either. She'd spent the morning cleaning and re-cleaning her flat to simply keep herself busy. Not only was she trying to process the loss of Harry, she hadn't been able to communicate with her two best friends through it all.

"How about you cut the middle and try a bottle of fizzy water, on the house?" Hannah offered an option that would help settle Alicia's stomach and try to get her away from more alcohol. Normally, she would have point blank cut Alicia off but when people were emotional, they didn't often react in rational ways. Seeing as she'd never had to do that with Alicia before , Hannah didn't want to find out her reaction under such tragic conditions.

She nodded. "All right, I'll try it. But if it doesn't help, I'm sticking with the firewhiskey."

She absently moved around the empty, upturned glasses on the table before her. "Did you want to have a seat? Maybe get off your feet a moment?" She could also use the company, but she didn't want to say so out loud.

Hannah used an unspoken summoning spell used by the Leaky employees to cause a fizzy water to fly over the crowd to her location. Once she had the drink in her hand, Hannah waved her wand and sent the shot glasses toward the kitchen where they would be washed post haste to ensure they were keeping up with the demand for the night.

She looked at the clock on the wall, two minutes til nine. "Sure I can have a seat," she knew Tom wouldn't mind her bailing out a few minutes early considering she had worked two hours longer than she was supposed to on a day when others had used Potter's death as a reason to call out of work.

Suddenly, the fact that Harry had died hit Hannah like a brick. She had kept herself so busy all day that she'd not really taken the time to process it at all. A tear began to fall slowly down her cheek. "Have you talked about it today?"

"Angie and Mel came over for a while," she said as she stared at the bottle of water. She tapped a fingernail against the glass, not really wanting to drink it, but knowing she probably should at least take a sip.

"I only had a couple of appointments so they were easy to cancel. That's the thing when your job involves providing a calm and relaxing atmosphere and intimate touching - you can't do it when you just want to scream out to the world."

"That's good," she reached up and wiped at the tear, "you should be with friends at a time like this." Hannah's job gave her many acquaintances. She had even had friends from her school years that she would spend time with on occasion. Still nothing could replace the comfort of being with your closest friends when bad news arrived. At least despite their fight, both of the guys had owled her no matter how brief their words had been.

Hannah would have grabbed herself a firewhiskey but she felt it would be counter productive to do so when she was trying to cut Alicia off. So instead, she sat there without a drink. "That's the good thing about this job. At times it keeps you so busy there is no time to think."

"I could do with some less thinking," Alicia admitted.

All right, it was time to try it. She lifted the bottle of fizzy water and brought it to her lips, feeling the stuff go down her throat. It tasted weird, but at least it didn't make her want to vomit. That was good.

She put the bottle down, waiting to see if it would help.

"I've been thinking all day, but I still can't make sense of it. And the more I think, the more scared I get, because if Harry can go, then anyone can."

Any time Hannah's thoughts had wandered today, it had been to Ron and Hermione. She couldn't imagine how hard today must have been for them. She had pondered whether or not she ought to send them a note but she knew that any words she would have to offer would not suffice.

"I've thought of that today as well," she really wished she had a drink. It would help her escape the guilt she was still harboring over last night's events between her and Justin. She knew he was mad at her, but he'd never ignored her before when things were off kilter and she was really worried.

Angie arrived at the Leaky like she said she would, not intending to stay very long. She did want to go check on Ginny after the fact, but she'd also mentioned to Roger that she'd be there. She wasn't sure how many people would be there, but was not surprised by the crowd that had gathered by the time she arrived.

She saw plenty of familiar faces about including Hannah and Alicia, but both were occupied. Angie was about to grab a drink and barge on in anyway but first she spotted another familiar face. Angie rather hoped Roger was in a better mood than she, and more like himself than she, because she could certainly use his particular brand of humor to get her smiling again. With a drink in hand, she approached him. "Hey stranger," she greeted him.

Roger was off duty for the rest of the night now. He'd told Ange that he would be showing up at the Leaky Cauldron. He figured he might as well. Roger didn't know Harry as well as some people. During school he only knew Harry from reputation alone.

It was only in the last few years, working together in the Auror Office that Roger got to see the man behind the legend. Roger got along with him, and he appreciated Harry's sense of determination and even the way he bent the rules. He worked with Harry, and they were partners on their last case. At the very least, Roger could have a drink to his memory.

Roger got there a little later than he expected, since he had to finish up some paperwork before leaving. He was getting stressed about the Zurlo case, but the load was easier since Warrington was on the case with him now. He was determined that he was going to relax tonight, so Roger had every intention of going right up to the bar once he entered the Leaky Cauldron.

He was stopped part way though by Angelina Johnson, and he couldn't stop but smile down at her. "Hey you," he said warmly. "I think you need to see me more, if I'm a stranger," he teased and gave her a wink. "The bar is calling my name, walk with me?"

Angie couldn't help smiling right back at Roger. The damned expression was so contagious. She accompanied him to the bar as requested, her drink halfway empty. In the time it took someone to actually come attend them Angie had finished hers. "Might as well get a refill while I'm here with you yeah?"

She tossed her hair back over her shoulder to keep it out of her face and tapped her fingernails against the glass. "Right well we haven't been seeing as much of each other lately have we? But it's the off-season for me now. I should have much more free time on my hands."

"Might as well," Roger said with approval, as he ordered himself a fire whiskey. It turned out that he needed something strong tonight. Everyone here tonight was probably having something strong tonight. Once the bar tender brought it, he lifted the glass to his lips for a solid drink.

"Not completely your fault," Roger said with a grin in a teasing tone, before he spoke seriously. "I've been busy with work. And I'm still going to be busy for the next while. But I guess that just makes my free time all the more important to enjoy," Roger said. "So try to save some of that free time for me."

Angie had another whiskey as well, greeted someone she knew in passing and turned back to Roger. "No not completely," she agreed. "The DMLE's been keeping you quite busy. Doesn't really seem like that's about to change yeah. Whenever the do decide to give you some time off we ought to have a pick-up game of one these days. I actually miss playing Quidditch with some of you lot."

It had just been an idle thought, but Angie found she actually liked it the more she thought about it. Quidditch and just flying in general took her mind off everything else. Maybe that's what she should be out doing right now.

"Merlin, I haven't played Quidditch in ages," Roger said with a slightly frustrated sigh. Any attempt at wanting to make some kind of Quidditch league DMLE got put on the back burner when things got busy. It was probably sometime in the summer that he played a pick up game last.

"You pick a day, and I'll make time for it. I'll try to anyway," Roger said with a grin. It would be something to look forward to at least. He needed something like that, something fun with people outside of work so he could get his mind off of it for a change. But it was still going to have to wait till after they got a strong lead on the Zurlo case.

"I thought not," she replied, "and that's a bloody shame. You were too good to not still play from time to time." She pointed at him. "And I'll deny that if you ever tell anyone I said it," she teased. Good. She could tease. That meant she wasn't in danger of drinking herself into a stupor tonight. That was good considering she was still planning to visit Ginny after this, which meant being able to apparate. Drunkenness was not conducive to apparation.

"I'll do that then. Probably in the next few weeks if we can manage it. Hopefully you'll get a break in your case soon and actually get a day off, yeah?"

"Now if only I got those compliments from you back in school," he said when she complimented him on his Quidditch ability. He laughed though when she added that teasing remark. "Of course you will," he said still chuckling as he took another drink.

"Good, a few weeks should give me plenty of time. Though at this point I'm just hoping for a strong lead so we can finish this case," Roger said the annoyance in his voice. But he didn't want to talk about work. "But I'm off duty now. I don't have to worry about that till I go in tomorrow," he said not wanting Angie to worry about his work either. "What are your plans the rest of the night?"

"Well back in school I obviously had to pretend you weren't as difficult an opponent as you were. You even captained well but," Angie shrugged, her smile a bit wicked, "I suppose not quite good enough." She was obviously still teasing.

"Good, then I'll try to make sure you can get a good match in. I'll move dates and times around if I have to; you're the one with the busy schedule. For me it's just events and sponsorships and training until next season." She arched an eyebrow at him. "I'm going to stop by Ginny's a bit, see how she's managing," she replied, a bit soberly. Too soberly. She needed another drink. "After that, who knows? What about you?"

"And obviously I had to pretend it was the combination of three lovely lady chasers that was distracting in a match," Roger said laughing at that tease. "I'm going to let that slide Miss Johnson, only because you captained well yourself," Roger said with a wink.

"Oh the life of a Professional Quidditch player," Roger said smiling when Angie went on about her free time. His smile faded though and he nodded when she explained she was going to see Ginny. "I think you need another drink before you do that," Roger suggested. That was going to be a hard visit. "I have no plans. Maybe do some laundry, sleep. Not that exciting."

"Pretend? Of course that's what was distracting you," she replied with an arch smile. "What else could it possibly have been?"

Angie agreed with Roger and got a refill on her drink. She knew that the upcoming conversation with Ginny would be unpleasant, but she wouldn't be much of a friend if she didn't check in on her. But she could think about that when the time came. For now she focused on this bit of pleasantry in her day. "Laundry? Roger, all work and no play! Who are you? I'm disappointed."

"Oh so you're admitting that your charm was used to win Quidditch matches?" Roger said teasing back at that arch smile. It was really a hidden compliment that Angie and the girls were probably some of the best chasers Gryffindor could have had.

Roger laughed when Angie questioned him on doing laundry. "I have work early in the morning. And it would be kind of inappropriate for me to try to pick up a girl tonight," he admitted. This gathering was to honour Harry after all. Even Roger had his limits.

"Actually I was trying to insinuate that it had to have been our stunning charms that distracted an otherwise excellent player. My compliment a little to backhanded and obscure?" She actually managed a laugh herself and was instantly grateful to Roger for it.

"Mmm, I suppose," Angie conceded, "though all bets would be off if it were an Irish wake, you know." Angie hadn't had much opportunity - probably for the best - to be a part of an Irish wake, but from Seamus's tales, a celebration of life with plenty of food and drink seemed a lot better than a dreary funeral service.

Bianca wasn't really sure she wanted to be here. No scratch that, she was definitely sure she didn't want to be here. But she had a ton of baked good, and needed to not be alone. Jasper's company earlier in the day had been enjoyable, and it actually had her smiling even hours later. It was that actually that got her a bit ore in the mood to go to the leaky, though she still didn't intend to stay long.

Upon arriving the first thing she did was look for Hannah. Peeking out from behind a stack of neatly lined up boxes, Bianca headed for the bar. "Hi Hannah," she greeted her friend. "So, er, here's what I brought along," she added.

Hannah had gathered that Bianca wasn't too keen on the idea of coming by the Leaky this evening. Therefore, she had kept watch through the crowd for her friend's arrival. When she saw her, Hannah made sure to head back to the bar where she could intercept Bianca.

"Glad you made it," Hannah took some of the boxes and placed them behind the counter while using her wand to open others up to see what was inside. "So, what all did you bring?" She was glad to have something to focus on for a few minutes other than the constant replacement of empty glasses with freshly filled ones.

Bianca was grateful Hannah had come right over to her. She set down the rest of the boxes and opened some herself. Inside was an assortment of tea cakes, tarts, biscuits, and miniature pies. They were all expertly decorated, some of them even hinting at the flavors based on the decorations. The carrot cakes for instance were decorated with little orange carrots in icing.

"I think I brought a little of everything. The biscuits are um, chocolate chip, lemon creme, and cinnamon sugar. The cakes are carrot, chocolate, earl grey tea cake with cream cheese icing, and lemon cake with raspberry filling. And there are fruit tarts and pies too."

When she finished listing them all, Bianca realised just how much variety she had made. And she still had some left at home!

Hannah summoned a few trays from the back and began to take the items out of the boxes and sort them by type. She would then place the traces at various spots around the pub so patrons could take them at will. "Did you bring cards for me to put on the trays?" she asked. Perhaps something good could come of this tragedy.

"They all look beautiful," Hannah exclaimed tucking two boxes under the counter. She would take one upstairs and one to Ernie's later tonight. "I didn't think there was enough time in one day to bake all of this."

"Well," Bianca replied hesitantly, "I didn't really sleep very much last night. I was just all anxious and nervous and all sorts of things and I didn't know why. When I found out-" she shook her head, not wanting to mention it. "Anyway I started baking not two hours after I came home from the gala and just...kept going until I'd exhausted everything."

But she hadn't exhausted herself yet. Maybe tonight she could sleep well. At least she wasn't still having nightmare-visions. She dug around in her bag and produced a number of cute and quaint business cards. They weren't for The Sweet Shoppe, actually; they were her own, all in blue and quite retro-looking. "Yes, I brought these."

Hannah tilted her head to the side as she heard Bianca talk about staying up even after returning from the gala. She had her own reasons for not having slept well last night but couldn't fathom why Bianca would have been anxious. "When did you find out?" Hannah inquired. "If Ernie hadn't owled me this morning I'd likely not found out until this afternoon." She wondered if someone had told Bianca before the Prophet hit the stands that morning.

She reached out and took the cards. "These look nice," she noted the individual flare Bianca had brought to the promotion pieces. She split the cards into small piles and place them on each of the trays she would be sending out into the room.

Bianca closed her eyes, remembering the front page of the paper that morning. "I saw it in the Prophet." She gave a nervous little sound that sounded like a quiet hysterical laugh. "Broke a teacup when I saw it. I thought someone was playing a terrible joke. I wasn't until I opened my journal and saw everyone commenting that I knew it was real. So I went back to baking to stop thinking about it."

She pushed her hair out of her eyes. Despite not really feeling weary, she looked it. "I had this terrible feeling for a bit now but I never thought that this was what it was heralding. I just wish I'd paid better attention, though that might not have done any good anyhow." She smiled weakly at Hannah's compliment. "Thank you. I designed them myself."

Hannah listened as Bianca told how her morning had gone. She thought back to the deck of cards still sitting on the end table upstairs beside her bag of runes. She and Lavender had a feeling as well and had done the only thing they knew to do about it. The result had left them worried and anxious. Now, they had a tangible reason behind those feelings.

"I think we're all going to be on edge a little until the Ministry determines why Harry was killed and who did it," she charmed a few of the trays so that they flew above the heads of the patrons and landed at specific locations in different parts of the pub.
