Lilith walked down a long dark hallway. The walls and the floor beneath her feet were stone, she thought they would probably be cold if she could feel them. She passed by a window hung with a tattered dark curtain; the scene outside was unfamiliar, dark with the moon high in the sky. At the end of the long hallway was a wooden door. She felt as if she were floating towards it, drawn to see what was on the other side.
The door swung open on it's own, and suddenly screams reached her ears. Lilith reached the doorway and stopped just inside, unable to move further. It was nearly dark, and everything was a blur. Four people in ripped and bloodstained clothes writhed on the floor. The room stank of sweat and the coppery scent of blood. A child's scream rose up above the cacophony, followed by the voice of a woman, screaming, "Tommy, no! Please don't hurt him, please!"
Figures cloaked in black circled the room, their wands drawn. She got a glimpse of a face, a man with hard features and a cruel sneer as he snarled, "Kill the Muggle scum!" Then four of the dark cloaked figures pulled back their wands and screamed in unison, "Avada Kedavra!" There was a flash of brilliant green light, and then Lilith shot up out of bed, clutching her blanket to her chest as she screamed.
Sweat dripped down her back as her voice quieted to a hoarse murmur. "NO. No. No no no no." She lurched out of bed and stumbled into the bathroom. She felt her stomach heave once, twice, and she forced it back. Leaning over the sink, she turned the water on cold and splashed it over her face. Though she was awake now, she could still smell the copper stink of blood in her nostrils and hear the pained screams of the victims as they writhed on the floor.
Splashing her face with water again, she lifted her head and stared into the mirror. Her eyes were wide and bloodshot, her skin even paler than usual. Her hands shook as she clutched the edges of the sink. Suddenly, from within the bedroom, she heard a family clawing at the window. She grabbed a towel from beside the sink and scrubbed it over her face as she stumbled into the bedroom on shaky legs. She reached the window and pulled it open to allow the owl to fly in. The owl released what it was carrying, the paper making a thump as it smacked the floor. The owl hooted once, blinked, and then turned and flew out her window and down Diagon Alley.
Her body still trembling, Lilith glanced down at the Prophet on the floor. The headline screamed up at her: "BODIES OF MUGGLEBORN'S FAMILY DISCOVERED: DARK MARK LEFT OVER HOME."
The newspaper blurred before her as she swayed on her feet. Lilith felt so faint. With one gasp for air, Lilith fell to her knees, clutched the paper in her hand, and sobbed.
