Max had barely had time to take in his new surroundings when he heard someone approaching. Being a calm, collected person, he waited patiently to find out what was going on; running away would serve no purpose at all...where would he go?
Even Max's cool demeanor was shaken when the owner of the footsteps came into view, It's an elf...and fairies! Okay, I'm drugged. That explains everything...the fountain, the mansion, the magical wee folk....
The Elf introduced himself and explained what, supposedly, was happening here. The elf, Legolas, seemed harmless and had not asked him any questions about being an alien, so there was no reason to be rude, "Hello, Legolas, I'm Max Evans. Now, you seem like a very nice guy and I don't mean to be rude, but I need to speak to whoever is in charge", a twinge of guilt went through him looking at the poor guy in the elf costume, "I'm a minor and an American citizen. I have rights and my father is a lawyer. I want to call my father, please". Max had not once raised his voice, This is FBI or CIA for certain. Sheriff Valenti couldn't afford this and he'd never stoop low enough to drugging me. Max rubbed at his eyes, trying to make the fairies go away.
He wondered how they had gotten the drug into him. It couldn't have been the shake or the Tabasco sauce. there was no way Liz would have cooperated with them and no way they could have known what he would drink. He looked at Legolas again. There was really no way he could have been drugged...no way at all. But...elves? There was no such thing as...well...some people didn't believe in aliens either.
With a thoughtful look, Max stepped forward, "I'm sorry if I seem...confused. I have reason to be distrustful of people..", he lowered his eyes and shoved his hands in his pockets, "...nothing you need to worry about, Mr. Legolas". Leaning back against the fountain, Max managed a smile for the elf, "Could you repeat what you were telling me about this place and why I'm here, please? I'm afraid I didn't get it all the first time...I was a bit distracted...", he shrugged, "...sorry!".
