His lips spread in a kind of indifferent smile, and his dark shoulders hopped up and down in a light shrug. She had spoken to him, which was enough of an invitation for him to walk a little closer to her. The water was lapping up onto the shore, cooling his feet as he left little imprints in the wet sand.
She was a stranger, and even though he wasn't totally black, his darker-toned skin could sometimes intimidate people, so he didn't get too close. "Not really disappointed. Surprised anyone else is here."
Not that he should be. Tourist season was beginning to go into full swing, which meant that all the beaches on Empyrean would soon be pretty packed, but there were little enclaves here and there that weren't on the regular tourist path. Still, the locals knew about them, and usually began frequenting them during the summer to avoid the heavy tourist crowds.
He took a moment to look over Olivia, without gawking or staring too much at once. She looked to be around his age, but he was pretty sure he had not seen her before. This also wasn't uncommon for him, since he wasn't frequently on Empyrean, and Gatestown was populated enough that not everyone on the islands knew each other.
"Are you a tourist or a native?" He did notice that she didn't have the wave tattoo, which meant she hadn't tried to swim the Follies.
