Luckily, my parents were old hippies, so they we're very accepting and supportive. I got no grief whatsoever and it wasn't uncommon to get nice books on the subject as birthday/christmas gifts.
Friends- when I was younger I didn't have many because I was pegged as the "weirdo" and was the laughing stock of the school. The one friend I had was fine with it, however, much to my horror and dismay, she'd been telling people I was a "Satanist". (I'm from a very small town, so you can imagine the stigma attached and associated to me.)
Now that I'm older (I'm thirty years old), the friends I have are more open-minded and accepting than those you generally encounter in a high school setting. I haven't had any problems or issues with it, just had to explain a few things on occasion to a couple people who either didn't get it or wasn't sure what it was about.
