Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO:Artemis and Aden
WHAT: Chatting
WHEN: Late afternoon, 8/21
WHERE Cosi 12th and Walnut
RATING: low probably.

Getting food was important to make sure she kept her energy up, and there were a number of small cafes near her school, which made life easier when she had to stop in and pick up materials. Even though it was Sunday there were always students around, but no classes thankfully. She had gathered up the things she needed and headed out, and now she was sitting with tea, a bowl of lentil soup, and a turkey sandwich. It was raining outside and so having something warm to eat and drink was nice, even though it was warm outside.

Her fingers absently tracked over the screen of her computer, moving things around and occasionally taking a bit of her food. It was easy to get lost in her schoolwork, since it was something she was passionate about, though she did look up once in awhile - being born and raised in the city gave an innate caution and wariness of people, since she did not want to lose any of her things or have any problems and so awareness helped a lot.

Aden needed a quick bite to eat. The day had been a long one already, and he had an hour or so before he had to be back to anywhere important. So quickly he moved into the nearest cafe, and ordered himself a coffee and a decent lunch, before stepping away and taking a look around the cafe.

Spotting someone somewhat familiar, he furrowed his brows and slowly made his way towards her, "Excuse me, your last name isn't Brown is it?" He knew approaching someone in the open like this in the city was a good way to get pepper sprayed, so he made sure to have both hands up a bit, and out in the open for her to see, "I only ask because you remind me of someone."

Artemis was focused on her design when Aden approached, and so she startled slightly before looking up at him. There were a few places he could recognise her features from, honestly, and she honestly wasn't certain which would have clued him in to who she was. At least her last name.

"That depends. Are you a cop, a doctor, or a football fan?" Because each would elicit different reactions from her. Well, less so with the first two, but her brother and dad both being famous players in the city would mean she may deny the relation and claim it was simply something a lot of people saw. The other two she would assume he knew one of her sisters and go from there.

Aden blinked and laughed, "Right, I'm sorry. I'm Detective Aden Walker, and you look like a woman I've met a few times in the force," He reached into his inner pocket and pulled out his badge, setting it on the table for her to look at, "Badge number 2553. You can look it up if you want, just was curious. I hadn't seen her in awhile and you look remarkably similar to her. And if you don't, I'll go ahead and assume I'm racist, and properly go drink myself into submission out of guilt."

He grinned, and turned around when the server brought him his coffee, thanking her before taking a drink and looking back to Artemis.

A smile curved her lips and she motioned to the empty seat across from her. "You mean Helen, then." Because she did have a sister on the force, though she was pretty sure Helen wasn't currently a detective, just a regular officer. "You can join me if you want to." She was rarely opposed to company unless it was someone looking for a way to meet her brother or her dad.

"If you'd said football fan I might have just let you think you were racist. Using me or my sisters to meet my dad or brother gets lame pretty fast." But she was friendly enough otherwise. "I'm Artemis, but most people call me Missy. Nice to meet you, Aden. Or...officer Walker?"

"God don't call me officer Walker. Technically detective anyway, but it's formal, and makes me sound like a respectable human being. I'd hate for that to ever be the case," he grinned and snatched up his badge again before sitting down, looking at her, "And yes, Helen. Probably should have led with the name I guess. It's a pleasure to meet you Missy."

He took a drink of his coffee, and nodded, "She told me about your father, and brother. I'm a big fan of football, but I also hate acting like a fan. I imagine it'd get annoying, so I don't like to add to that."

A grin parted his lips then, "But yea, just call me Aden. I think your sister mentioned you a few times before too. A student, right?"

"No, you wouldn't want to be thought of as respectable, of course. Though I imagine there are a lot of people that are wary around police nowadays." A faint shrug. She paid attention to politics and the news, even though it made her uneasy most of the time. The thought of dying for any reason was terrifying to her, especially since she was often sick.

"Yeah, they both are really good. I'm pretty lucky because it meant I didn't have to worry much about money for school. I am a student, yes. Looking for an MFA in fashion design." Which would probably turn him off from talking about it, much like it did her siblings and some of her friends.

She took a sip of her tea and closed her laptop. She didn't want to seem rude with someone that worked with her sister. "So, tell me something about you then. You probably heard a bit about all of us, so you've got a knowledge advantage."

"Why would I? I'm a cop, which generally means if I'm respectable, people don't buy it," He chuckled then shrugged thinking about it, "Yea, news hasn't helped. Though I don't wear a uniform, and badge is usually hidden. I'm a detective, so I don't get as much of a bad wrap. Still, it's something to deal with, though I can't say I disagree with the news all the time."

Another sip of his coffee, and he leaned back raising a brow, "Wait, they have degrees for fashion? No wonder mine is so atrocious. I might need to get you to help me out with that, you know, being the expert and all." A grin showed off his teeth, before shrugging again, "Okay, something about myself."

He tapped his fingers on the table, and raised a brow, "Let's see... uh... I'm a risk taker. I'm thinking of trying one of those Swedish Fish oreos."

"I imagine the majority are good people, or at least started that way. Just because some horrible people slip in... I mean, that happens in every field, right? Teachers, priests, lawyers." A pause and a thoughtful look. "Okay, maybe not lawyers. They're supposed to be bad people, right?" Because sometimes you had to be to do a job like that, she guessed.

"There are. I'm a designer, meaning that I create ideas ans occasionally make them. Like this." She motioned at the sundress she was wearing. It was simple, but obviously carefully done as well with a bit of embroidery at the edges. "It's not hard though to find things. You go with what looks good, you know?"

A wrinkle of her nose at the next statement and she made a face. "Don't do it. My brother was crazy enough to bring them home and left one out of the pack. It was bad. I think he meant to gross one of us out."

"Oh yea, they all start with the desire to help and whatever. Some are heroic types and want to go in guns blazing. Some are knot heads with a mean streak, though to be fair they get weeded out a lot because of that. A few bad apples get through though, and then even some more simply become that way through being beat down, spit on, and things they've seen. It's not an excuse, but just the way it is unfortunately."

He took a sip from his coffee, "Or others end up taking the real bad jobs, and to keep giving a shit take it out on their own bodies in some fashion or other. So, you know, life as a cop..."

He noted her dress, looking it over some and then shook his head, "well it looks nice on you, not entirely certain I know what makes it any different than other dresses. Don't have the eye for detail. I put suits on that fit, and hope they don't get too dirty by the end of the day."

Laughter and he nodded, "Right, okay, I'll stick with the classics then. So what brings you here?" Gesturing for her computer, "I'm not interrupting anything important am I? Like Skype call with the boyfriend or something?"

Artemis smiled. "So were you one of the ones that wanted to be a hero then? Knight saving damsels and all that?" Because it seemed like something that could be fact, though she imagined that it wasn't something that could drive you forever. The world was a difficult place most of the time and so she couldn't imagine optimism could last in certain jobs. Law enforcement and medicine both seemed to have a lot of stress, from what she'd seen, though her sisters managed well. They had a lot of support though - the family was close.

A nod and she tugged on a bit of her hair thoughtfully. "I guess you need a strong support system to avoid that. It can't be a pleasant life, especially here. The city is pretty rough usually." That she knew from her life there - it was hard to ignore things when you saw them every day.

"It's okay. My dad and brother are the same, and my sisters think there are other things I should focus on." But fashion was hers, like football was her brother's or helping others was for both of her sisters, in different ways. She wanted to make the world prettier, one person at a time.

"No, no boyfriend. I don't really have time for that, and even if I did, most of the guys around aren't interested." She shrugged one shoulder and tapped the computer. "I was just tossing together one of my ideas. Nothing really concrete, but then classes haven't officially started so it doesn't have to be yet."

Aden laughed and shrugged a bit, "I wanted to help people, so I suppose there was some part of it that was about being a hero, though I didn't want to drive fast cars, and chase down criminals while jumping off bridges bringing down the worst of the worst. Nothing Bruckheimery, that is," Aden grinned and watched her, "Though saving the occasional damsel does have its rewards, and I enjoy that."

"You do need a strong support system though," He took a long sip, "So there is that." He thanked the waitress when she brought his sandwich to him, and took a bite from it. Chewing before he then raised up a brow again, "I'm not trying to make fun of the fashion thing, just had no idea that was a legitimate degree or a real thing. But I know there's a lot of money in it, so good on you. And I'm certain you're much better at it than I ever could hope to be."

He grinned and then raised a brow, "Yea, boyfriends take a lot of time. They're like puppies, take most of the time out of the day. It's why I don't have one."

Artemis grinned. "So, you're like the knightly type?" A teasing look flickered across her face. She doubted he would see it that way but helping people was an important goal. It wasn't really her calling, though she supposed in some ways she would be able to if she reached a level of success. There were always charities, and she could do a donation program where purchases gave to developing countries or the poor here too.

She noted that he acknowledged her statement without addressing much more, which was logical enough. She didn't know him and he didn't know her, so that was more private, she knew. "It's something I've always loved. When I was little I wasn't out as much as my siblings so sketching and sewing became something that kept me busy."

A soft laugh and she shook her head at him. "No boyfriend. Girlfriend?" She tilted her head to examine him, thoughtful for a moment. He was pleasing to the eye, so she wouldn't be surprised honestly. "Or wife? Husband? You look older than I am, I think..."

"Knightly Type. I like it, it's like Diet Knight or Knight-Lite. Something like that, I like it," He laughed and then took another drink. Setting it back down, he watched her with his brow furrowing a bit, thinking on what she was saying, "If it's what you love then you should be studying it. Fantastic, fascinating, and all of that. And it's good you didn't follow your siblings, be your own woman, it's better that way."

Another long drink, another bite, and then a smirk, "No girlfriend either. Not gay, like women too much to even try it, but no not married. being a cop makes relationships a bit difficult. Sometimes a girl hates that my hours can be sporadic, another hates worrying about me, others just hate me. It can be any number of reasons really."

He raised a brow, taking his own moment to examine her, though he already had to be honest, "I am older though. 29. How old are you? 20? 21?"

"Knight-lite. Protecting damsels from dark rooms since...whenever?" She offered him a grin before taking another sip of her tea. She couldn't often stop herself from joking. It made life easier to go through it with a smile, and she had had a hard enough time with things that she didn't see any sense in being unhappy. Life was meant to be lived and enjoyed.

"Wow. Sounds like you've had some rough girls then. I mean, hate dating can't be very pleasant." She raised a brow at him. "You seem interesting enough. Maybe find like, a nurse or something that has similar crazy hours?" Because it would make sense. Couldn't be angry about crazy hours when you had them as well.

"I'm 22 now, so yeah, a bit younger." It didn't matter much to her. She could make friends with people of any age. It came from her time in hospitals, as well as time with extended family and her father's former teammates.
