Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Keara and Nate
Where: 11th St. Auto
When: 8/21, afternoon
What: Keara's having engine problems.
Rating: tbd.

Well this was just a load a crap. Keara was just leaving her brother's house when the car had started to make a funny whirring sound. A block later and the whirring sound had turned into smoke coming out the vents and two emergency lights blinking. Keara was quick to stop the car and call in a tow truck, but it was a Sunday and her usual shop was closed. If she didn't get it up and started again, she'd be stuck here when she had work in the morning.

The tow truck driver had a suggestion though of an auto body shop that was still open and towed her and the car there. Keara gave her thanks and a tip before hopping out of the truck and walking to the front, smoothing out the black shirt she wore over a pair of shredded faded jean shorts. 'Hello? Anyone around?" She called out, looking into the building as she did.

Being the one without a family to keep going on Sundays, Nate was often working the days that others didn't want to. He didn't tend to mind. Deirdre slept late most days and so as long as he brought dinner home they were pretty easily settled with whatever they needed. Sunday afternoon and evening was often slow though, and so he was in the back room playing a computer game when he heard the voice from the front.

It wasn't someone he recognised, which was a problem in a way. He couldn't speak, and while there was a pad on the table nearby in case, sometimes that was awkward. He grabbed it though after waving and scrawled a note, asking what was wrong, since she could at least start him on what needed to be checked.

Keara wasn't sure anyone was here for a moment when no one called back out to her. It would've just been her luck as she could already see the tow truck driving off through the window. "Well hell." She muttered to herself But then she heard footsteps and turned to face the man that walked out. Mmmm That was a very pretty man.

Keara licked her lips a little as she lost focus for a moment. It was enough for him to come over with a pad in hand and began to write. It was a curious way to communicate and Keara's first thought was that he was deaf. As an officer, she had learned enough sign to speak very basically with someone hard of hearing. She wasn't going to wax poetically for sure, but she could sign -Are you deaf? Should I write?- At the very least.

Nate was often shocked when someone knew how to sign, so a slight eyebrow raise did meet the signs. He wasn't displeased, it simply made his life easier for the few minutes he was with a customer. "No, I can hear. Just can't speak." He signed in response, offering a faint smile before pointing at her car. He needed to know what was going on so he could help her, after all.

Considering that it had been towed in - he had been able to hear that - it was clearly more than a roadside fix. The burned smell suggested the oil, the engine, or perhaps some sort of electrical short - but again he would not hint that he noticed. It was a faint smell and he should not have been able to detect it - and would not have as a human.

Catching the signs and understanding, Keara offered him an easy smile. "Good... I'm better at understanding sign than I am using it. I'm more likely to say something insulting rather than what I mean to say."

Running a hand through her blue hair a bit nervously she motioned to the vehicle. "So yeah,my car's blowing up and I don't know why, but I need it to get home and to work tomorrow." She gave a sheepish smile. "Can you save her?"

Nate nodded. It was common enough, and he would be sure to sign more slowly than he did at home. That wasn't hard honestly unless he got caught up in what he was saying. He noticed as he got closer that she smelled good- a difference from the faint burning emanating from the car. It was almost distracting, though he knew to be careful since the last time he had been distracted by a girl, he had been turned into a vampire.

"I'll take a look." Because without examining he didn't know if he could fix it. He popped the hood open and winced as the remnants of smoke escaped, waving one hand to dispel it. Nothing had actually caught on fire, so at least that was a positive revelation.

The place wasn't too bad for a random choice. Usually, Keara took her car to the dearler's mechanic, but that was more due to a lack of desire to try new places than it being a great place. Maybe she'd switch over here. At least then there'd be some very nice eye candy.

Though she was curious as to why he didn't speak. Witch's curse? Mutation? Religious vows? Probably wasn't the best idea to just ask a stranger so she sat down and watched as he began to look over her car. "The damn thing started to smoke when I was in 16th and Pine for no reason. It's not super old yet either." She called out. "I had the oil changed three weeks ago at the regular tune up too."

Nate listened to her as she spoke. It wasn't really easy to reply when he was under the hood of the car, so he just kept examining until he was able to identify the issue. He rose and offered a smile as he signed, "Oil overflow." He pointed at the small leak, which would be an easy enough fix, and he grabbed his pad.

A few notations were made as to how much it would cost and the various fixes he would apply, which he handed to her with a shrug. It wasn't much, but it would take a little bit. He would have to work later than he planned to get it done for her by the next day.

Keara watched the signed words and took a moment to remember what it meant. "overflow? Well hell." She grumbled and sighed at that. "Just my luck right?" Keara offered him a smile to prove that she wasn't upset with him but the situation.

Looking over the suggested price, she gave a quick nod. "Sure, go for it. Though how long before it'll get done?" She wondered if she should get comfortable or call an uber home. She hated those things but it was better than having to walk.

Nate looked at the car again. He could finish it in a few hours assuming he had the parts and could get everything put right again. He scribbled down that it would likely take around three hours, not sure if she would want to stay or get some other way home. He couldn't offer to take her and fix the car at the same time, after all.

"There are busses and cabs nearby too," Nate offered, not sure what she would find easiest. He guessed it really depended on how far she lived from the shop.

Three hours wasn't all that bad to be honest. There was always a kindle in the backpack she had in her car and some headphones if she wanted. Plus, there was going to be a hot man with a nice ass bending over her car and fixing it. It sounded like a damn good show to be honest.

"Three hours isn't all that bad. If it's alright. I'll just stick around a bit." Maybe she'd go out and grab a snack, but right now she shifted into the chair where it gave the best view and relaxed.

Nate nodded and got to work on the car, figuring it wasn't a big deal at all. He was much more focused on it than anything else, and he worked more quickly now than he had when he was mortal. He was able to get done in a little less than the three hours he had said it would be, but not much.

He smiled at her, wiping his hands on a rag to get some of the oil off. He would need to wash up, but that would be when he got home. For now he would just wash his hands when she left and start cleaning up to close.

It was actually a damn nice view, and Kaisa ended up spending more time watching him than reading whatever was on her kindle. As he worked, she also decided to psyche herself up to maybe try to flirt her way into a date with the man. It'd been a long time since she'd had the chance to go out with someone and even if she was sure nothing would get past a few dates, she'd like to try.

"Thanks, looks like it's going to run great. You really fix cars good." Yep... already foot in mouth. Maybe she should just crawl under the table here and now.

"So you work here often?" Instead, she was apparently going to still open her mouth and make an idiot of herself.

Nate raised a brow at her statement, but replied, "Been working on cars for years. My dad taught me." Because he didn't acknowledge that he was adopted typically. He had been brought up in the Levine family, and no other family really mattered to him.

The second comment though brought something of a smirk to his lips and he shrugged. "Every day, pretty much." Because while he did take time off sometimes, he didn't see much need to have a set day off. The more days he worked the more money he made, and that would be good when he needed it for papers later.

"That's cool. My dad taught me to shoot a gun. I wish he would've taught me how to fix a car though." Yeah, that didn't sound creepy either. Keara fought the urge to smack her forehead with her hand. " He was a cop."

The smirk made her blush a little but Keara smiled at him."Sounds like you work hard. Must be hard to work all day and then have to go home and make dinner.' Yeah! that was smooth. See, she could do this.

Nate nodded slightly at that. He didn't know many cops, but Dee has a friend that was one. It wasn't a huge deal to him either way. He rarely interacted with the police one way or the other. It wasn't necessary for him.

"I do take out with Dee mostly." Because they had a lot of animals to feed, and he worked long hours. Take out was just easier.

Well he didn't seem freaked out about the cop thing, so that was good. Keara fought the urge to fidget and instead ran a hand through her blue hair and smiled. Maybe this wasn't going nearly as terrible as she thought.

And then the girl's name came out and she almost flinched. "Oh? Dee is your girlfriend?" Well there went that whole hope. Of course a good looking and seemingly mostly normal guy was already taken.

Nate shook his head slightly. "Sister." Also translator, best friend, blood donor, and a number of other things. Clearly this woman was interested, but he could not even think of things like that right now. He was still adjusting to being a vampire, and the last girl he had shown an interest in had been the cause of that. He would shut this down, that would be for the best.

"It's just about time for me to close up. You need anything else?" He had fixed the car. That was his job in all this.

Sister, that was good. Hopefully that meant that there was no girlfriend around. Of course, that didn't exactly mean that he was interested either. Especially when he apparently was closing up.

Deciding to just go for it, she thumbed to the door. "I was wondering if maybe I could take you out for coffee as a thanks for getting my car working again."

He was being cautious lately, what with his new situation, and so he was not really looking to go anywhere with someone at this point. He shook his head slightly, "I have to get home so we can get dinner." Because he was the one that had and handled the money. Plus he probably should help Dee walk the dogs too.

Keara's face fell a little, but she gave a small nod and smile to him. "Yeah, no worries. I'm sorry to keep you so late. But thank you for helping me out.' She did reach out to grab a pen and wrote her name and number on the back of one of his cards and hand it over to him.

"The offer for coffee is always open though, even if it's completely friendly." Friends were better than nothing.
