On Thursday the Black July anti-Tamil riots begin in Sri Lanka, killing between 400 and 3,000. Black July is generally regarded as the beginning of the Sri Lankan Civil War. . Over the next seven days the riots spread to other parts of the country. Mobs of mainly Sinhalese attack Tamil targets, burning, looting and killing. 8,000 homes and 5,000 shops are destroyed and 150,000 people are made homeless. The economic cost of the riots was $300 million.
