Hi guys -- you lost me (Lis) to illness and school starting, but we're going to finish up Check in the next few days and tie it up properly.

Tomorrow (Friday) a post will go up describing an explosion in the building near the creche at nine fifteen am. It will affect the elevator electrics, and knock out the power -- essentially, locking in everyone already in the building and locking out those still outside. Power will be down, although blackberries will still work. This IC post will be a group log, with various time-stamped comment-trails to describe what's happening. You can branch out in subthreads; if you wish to log separate areas of the building with characters, please do!

WHAT WILL HAPPEN:
9.15 AM: Bomb goes off. It's loud, it stops the elevator and it nixes the power to level five. Everything stops working.

9.30 AM: People are gathered together enough in the panic for orders to go out -- techs MUST try and get shit working again, others buckle down and buck up, we'll soon be out of here, etc. HR watches for panic, confiding that there was mention about outside attack being possible.

Ongoing 'how do we fix this' discussion. Some will be locked out/in various depts etc.

11.00 AM: Elevators start back up -- only it's not the techs, it's another noise. Whoops, there are incoming (NPC) Black-ops types.

11.10 AM: Split into groups. Some to work on getting people out/finding an escape route, others to confront and deflect the troops, others to hide, etc.

All that happens -- Black ops engaged by resistance forces, moles getting confronted in various sectors... essentially, a free-for-all reaction to events + 'who is going to be a Big Damn Hero'.

12.30PM: Techs will blow open the elevator doors -- getting past the Black Ops to the elevators involves going via air vents, maybe blowing your way through the floor, climbing out and around through the windows, or circumventing the Black Ops via distraction, etc. Need to get out, and to stop Black Ops from following.

12.30 - 1.30 PM: Escapes.

1.45PM: Everyone surviving out, and the building is on fire. Ka-boom.

2.00PM: On-the-ground reactions, game end.


I will do my damndest to be around this weekend, on AIM as well as behind email -- if you need me, you can generally get my attention via email. Illness has sort of hit me hard these last couple of weeks. Let's let this game go out with a bang, however, and there will be things for all of your characters to do within the end-game.

Standard rules apply -- this is our last set of mini-missions, people! If you are late to the party and wish to have a mission not on this list, comment with a city and a mini-blurb and which character you wish to send on it, and it will be added to the list.

1. Washington DC -- neat take out of a senatorial adviser who is ‘advising’ a too-progressive line of policy. Need to get close enough to be certain it is the correct adviser, and to assassinate and leave behind a false trail that he has left under his own strength. (WIDOWER & 1 AGENT + advice from 1 CLEANER)

2. Washington DC -- intel to be gathered on Black agents in the area. Tap all known informants and sources for information. Clean up after yourselves. (BOYSCOUT + CHAMELEON & GOLIATH)

3. Moscow -- Drug cartel has taken an American woman into their clutches -- her family have not heard from her in a very long time, she last sent a postcard and telephoned from Moscow. They fear she has been reduced to prostitution to pay for her drugs since they cut her off. They want her brought back. (KESTREL + SPEAKEASY)

4. Paris -- An agent from a rival firm has gone rogue and is taking out known associates from that firm -- also known associates of the Agency. Either she needs to be recruited and this stopped, or she needs taking out. This will likely be problematic. (SORRY + DIPLOMAT & BATHORY)

5. Sydney -- A piece of jewelry is on show in a travelling exhibition that is under high guard. That jewelry’s origins are contested in typical WWII plunder fashion. The client wishes the jewelry to be returned to them but also to have no possible future problems in holding onto it. You will need to extract the piece of jewelry and create a diversion as to where it potentially went (see: Christies, other auction houses, potential buyers) so that the client remains safe. FAST LANE, SAWBONES + 1 AGENT + 1 FINANCIER.

Right! As per the plot-post, five individuals are going to get ~affected by the Black shenanigans. The way this will work: in comments, you may sign up one character of yours to be affected -- be it family and friends approached and darkly hinted at, whether the house is broken into, whether your dog is killed and nailed to a wall -- all fun fun ways of Black playing shit-stirrer with the Agency. This is shock-and-awe tactics, no one is getting killed, Black is just trying to send people running for the hills. You will have a week to write narrative/logs involving the scenario and by the 23rd, we will assume all these mini-attacks have happened.

When you comment, you will need to name which character you are signing up and a mini-precis of what is going to occur -- much like the mini-mission briefs we give you. If you could tell us which characters are going to be involved (you could write with someone else and have another character caught up in things) and where it'll take place and a short 'this will be the form of attack' -- e.g 'Sam' 'at his home' 'unknown gunman takes pot-shots as he goes home'. This means, Blackolytes, if there's anything you think your character could contribute to as part of an attack, email the mod-account and let us know -- and we will try and tie character-victims and character-aggressors together while preserving anonymity!

Hi guys! As you know, we are now definitely into September which is our last month here at Checkmate (a moment, for mourning) and that means a lot will be happening in a short space of time. However, all of us are dealing with schedule changes and a lack of time -- ( as evidenced by my disappearing into the ether of moving and school and so on for the last week or so, sorry guys -- Lis) and it would be vastly helpful for everyone if you all knew what was happening and when!

If you have a personal plot arc that you need to weave in, please email the mod account with the information about that plot arc, if you think it fits with this week or whether you want it part of next week or so on, and we will endeavor to make it happen. We hope that we can make this resolution-month the best ever and have Checkmate go out on a bang (...literally -- Lis)

FIRST WEEK:

11th Sept: Report incoming from outside contact in Triad operation; no longer feasible to maintain friendly contact with the Agency. Shutting down. ACCOUNTANTS: you will notice that the money supply going into the Agency accounts is much, much less than it ought to have been; i.e. that Agency contacts are not paying their bills. This ought to be referred to HR to be tracked (MINI-MISSION) FINANCIERS: you will notice you have fewer funds to play with // some accounts that you used to be able to get into to steal funds from are closed off from you, i.e, people are becoming wise to Agency-meddling in their personal funds. React at will. VESPER PLOT -- Yuliya begins running from Agency-friendly enemies.

12th Sept: CHRIS PLOT -- data fed back of the name of the man who killed his brother.

14th Sept: Black approaches will go out -- please email the mod account if you would like your character to be approached and mod-mail will negotiate what is offered to approachees. Simultaneously, approaches from rival firms. CHRIS PLOT -- will receive communication from Black that identifies the bank account that the money for the hit came out of, along with phone records traced back to a company-provided cell phone (now defunct) 'proving' pretty solidly the Agency 'took care' of Chris's brother. VESPER PLOT -- Cleaner dispatched to look into Yuliya's house-burning and ensure it wasn't Black-work.

15th Sept: PERSONAL ATTACKS ON INDIVIDUALS: sign-up will be posted to OOC for three characters to have either themselves or their loved ones targeted. This will be a warning rather than outright deaths.

16th Sept: Outside contact will email the Agency asking for protection; people connected to the Agency are dying. SVANA PLOT: A track-back of who precisely has been threatened/murdered/pressured into ending Agency negotiations will pinpoint it to the data taken from Svana in her home attack (seen in this log and passed on by her ex-husband to Black.

17th Sept: Mini-missions will go up -- signing up for these will involve some risk of character-death, be warned! Mods will contact individuals signing up for individual missions to clarify the bounds of each mission, but if you have any doubts about wanting to kill someone off, now is the time to worry about it.

Sooooooo I know I suddenly turned even more embarrassingly AWOL than usual, but RL became really shitty-crazy for a few weeks there, and I've also been without internet or a working laptop power cable. Getting in the mood for RP, it has been difficult. 8(

Still, though, I'm feeling really lousy about having missed so many crucial weeks. I'm clawing my way back via using friends' places for their wireless (or campus, once school starts tomorrow), so I'll be going through and commentbombing old posts -- feel free to respond or ignore at your leisure! & I know there are a ton of people I need to touch base with re: our characters; please please please feel free to hit me up on AIM about them if you like. Will has officially vanished.

The money that he'd gotten from his fathers is gone, and so is the contents of a small lockbox he had in his room at he and Tobey's place (a gun, several passports, other various currencies, etc). His handheld was taken apart and the parts were scattered. All communications to his email/voicemail/PM-box (or whatever!)/etc are going unanswered. He's not in any of his usual places, and Agent-training would suggest that he's burned his location and taken off. No notes were left, and nothing was said to his friends or family before he left.

Okay, kinda sorta not really hiatus. I'm driving my sweet ass down to Seattle tomorrow, and the trip will take me about two days. And then... I'll be in Seattle. Once there I'll probably be onlineish but activity will be spotty, and then after a week I'll meander my way back, sleeping on the floors of relatives' houses. I'll be back around the 8th/9th of September. I'm going completely by myself, so here's to me not getting abducted or disappearing into the Canadian wilderness.

So when I said Liz was my last, I lied. Because I have this guy here. >.>

Meet Mark Anderson! He's a Canadian who lived in Europe for a lot of his childhood, thanks to his father being a diplomat. He was educated in England for awhile before his father retired, and then the whole family went back to Canada. Blah blah blah adolescence and college, once he graduated he immediately applied to work for the diplomatic service, and was promptly sent back to Europe, where he worked in Berlin for awhile. His career working for the Canadian government was cut short when an Agency agent seduced him, used him to spy on the embassy he was working at, and then left him in a whole lot of shit. After being fired and banned for life, he tracked down the Agency, if not the agent, and was offered a place in the European branch when he found them! So he did his preliminary training in Europe starting six years ago, before transferring to the American branch four years ago. He was an agent for awhile, until a mission in Central America went south and he had to be rescued by his girlfriend (whooo just happens to be Annisa). After that event, he voluntarily retired from Agent life, switching to handlers where he is much happier! Except for the fact that the agent he was just working on a long term mission with died - for those to whom this is relevant, he was Torch's handler.

Personality wise - if you ask him, he's a bit boring. He's pretty quiet and unassuming, and really good at his job because he is a stickler for rules and has insane attention to detail. He's a bit of a micromanager, which anyone who has worked with him would definitely know. If you ask him, he certainly knows how to have fun, but this usually involves a beer and watching some sort of sport on television. Typically soccer or cricket, left over days from his education in England. He also has something of a tendency to fall for women who are his exact opposite - see Annisa, and the agent he fell for in Berlin. He has a tendency to be utterly enchanted by adventurous and outgoing women, it's something of a weakness for him.

So! Friends, people he's worked with, any sort of plot, do let me know~

Hello, hello! Rae here with my final character, Victor Faraday (callsign: Cobra). He's a Technician that specializes in poisons! So if you need any kind of poison/toxin/venom, he's the man to go to. He's also the man to go to when you've just discovered you've been poisoned and desperately need help with an antidote. He's been at the Agency for around 11 years now, and is BFF4LYFE with August and Isaac.

Let's see, what else? He's charming, confident, and a little on the self-absorbed side, but it's only really noticeable if you're close to him. He also happens to be a notorious womanizer -- he has the swagger of a champion and everything! ;D But he bores very easily, so he has a tendency to drop girls pretty fast. On the plus side, he is an amazing boyfriend during the short time he's dating someone! He's very ambitious, but perpetually unsatisfied. He could run the whole agency itself, and he'd still want more. But in the meantime, he is kind of irritated that he hasn't been promoted! Victor is also especially fond of the finer things in life: wine, fine art, theater, jazz music, etc. There's always jazz coming from the labs when he's working, just as a general FYI. Aaaand friendship is extremely important to him, so once you're his friend, you're his BRO (or lady) FOR LIFE.

Mini-missions

Rather than have the handler/agent fuss again over sign-ups -- if you play an agent or a handler, comment OOC here to grab a spot -- this is pretty much a free-for-all. The post of handler/agent pair-ups has been re-updated, so consider that as an IC email sent to your characters, informing them of their new working relationships!

there will be upcoming IC plot surrounding pre-mission stuff, so please keep mention of assignments/talk of missions out of IC discussion until that has gone up, please!


Middle-East - Ostensible mediation of an arms deal between two opposing factions. Very likely to break out into some sort of violence -- which needs to be contained, and blamed on the faction unfavored by the agency whilst the agent tidies up and prevents it from becoming too outrageous. [AGENTS: DIPLOMAT, WIDOWER BACKUP CLEANER: 1]

London - Financial crisis has taken out an Agency-favored business. Need to consult with Agency contact to pump some money back in from somewhere, but also deal with the head of the business who has reneged on Agency deals before -- he's heavily bodyguarded, though, with ex-SAS. [AGENTS: 2 FINANCIER: 2]

Moscow - A political criminal of Russian citizenship has caused major problems for an Agency contact in DC -- but because of Russia's non-extradition treaty regarding her own citizens, there's no possibility of calling them accountable. Hunt 'em down and take them out -- pure revenge contract, but needs to be careful as said political criminal has a nasty background in covert work themselves. [AGENTS: SEVER]

New York - Two different Agency contacts have requested protection/possible need for assassination when meeting with a possibly gone-bad partner -- except that the partner IS the other Agency contact. Balance is needed; neither can know the other is under Agency protection or that the outcome of the meeting (and whether either survives) is prevalent on how it goes/whether their interests line up with the Agency's. Need for constant supervision and the agents most talented in protection, quick thinking and reactions in-field. Agents will bodyguard both contacts, but will have to pretend to be generic covert-operations types in order to not raise suspicions with the other party. [AGENTS: FLATFOOT, SAINT, BACK-UP CLEANER: 1]

Minsk - Target is politician suspected of treacherous double-dealings with a foreign power. While allegations aren't necessarily true, a rival requires they become a reality. Eliminate current assistant by any possible means, pose as temporary replacement, and obtain evidence of disloyalty. Do not kill unless necessary. [AGENTS: BLACKJACK]

Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - A crooked casino mogul is running for public office in Sin City on a squeaky clean image, but a former flame (and sometime call girl) has been threatening to ruin his campaign with some inconvenient truths caught on video tape.  Locate the blackmailer, without her knowledge if possible, and destroy all evidence of the trysts. [AGENTS: BOYSCOUT]

[OOC: From now on, missions will be flying short but fast -- there'll be fewer of them, but they'll be coming out more often! So another batch will appear in a few days, likely when the other agents are still in the field. Rather than the mass-exoduses we've experienced before, the agents will essentially start rotating. Like the circle of life. The path unwinding. It moves us all.]

Sophia here, with my final character! This is Dembeza Butshingi, commonly known as Dem, and he's been a lawyer at the Agency for 33 years (with another 2 years before that as a grunt, so he's been here a long time.) Basic rundown:

  • Born in South Africa ("Xhosa", his callsign, is also his ethnicity) but emigrated to the US as a kid; worked for Lehman Brothers before he joined the Agency

  • specializes in contract and banking laws (Financiers, let's plot!)

  • follows his own moral code, a lot of which goes against US laws, and is almost always willing to help you bend laws for personal gain so long as it doesn't go against what he believes is right; he is also the guy to ask if you want something that isn't strictly Agency-sanctioned (nothing that will make him lose his job, but things that are perhaps frowned upon XD)

  • has been married 3 times and divorced twice (his third wife was an Agent who was killed on a mission); he's really big on family but ironically has ended up an old bachelor so he tends to treat his Agency friends/coworkers as his "family"

  • a man's man - he works just fine with women but he's definitely the kind of guy who thinks a woman should stay home and take care of the kids first (and of course his department is all female, so...XD)

    Hi everyone, I'm Rhythm, a new player! :)

    This is Bailey Li, callsign "DIVA". She's a 32 year old Australian who spent most of her early life in Hong Kong. She's a trained accountant, an ex-competitive rifle shooter and possesses a great affection for drinks and club beats. She has a great interest in minding her own business and a bigger one for people not minding hers! In fact, if you've been around her long enough, you might be one of those who have started cataloging (if not receiving) her fantastic array of stares and glares.

    How did she get the job? Well, following a recommendation from an ex, she applied for the job under desperate circumstances (hey, being an accountant isn't fun at all, sorry). She got it and he got punched in the face, ding ding ding. Bailey's been with the Agency for about seven years now, spending extra rotations with the analysts and agents as a grunt. Previously an analyst (HK), she fought tooth and nail to get to her current position as a handler (and damn if there weren't so many talented douches to beat). A year and a half into it and she's still enjoying it, if not wanting to punch more people or get drunk more often.
