In third grade, for Royce anyway, courtship hadn't really been an issue.
Even before the change, the young were had never been all that good at being social. As a child, he had kept to himself, not pushing himself to join the other packs of children. The other kids always looked like they were enjoying themselves, like they knew exactly what they were doing and what they wanted. Problem there was that Royce didn't know how to do any of that. Enjoyment was short in coming and he never knew what he was doing and knew even less of what he wanted. Things that had carried long after childhood ended. Tragically annoying for a guy who was ready to move past his old troubles and onto new treasures.
So yeah, he asked her if she wanted to hold hands. He wasn't in third grade anymore. He wasn't that little kid, longing from the outside to be part of the in-crowd, and he knew exactly what he wanted. Maybe he was still working on the whole part about what he was doing though. Dating a human was dangerous. It was frowned upon by most packs because of the number of risks involved for both parties. Human and beast. But he was still doing it.
Only in New Hope.
Charlie might have been wondering how she managed to get so lucky to find him but if he had known her thoughts, Royce would have insisted it was the other way around. It was her that was bringing him out of this dark world. Her that smiled and chased the shadows away. She had reached out to him first. Charlie was kindness personified. Her voice was the music that tamed the beast.
Too bad he couldn't put all that into words. Damnit.
"So tell me, am I ever going to be invited to your place without the promise of food?" He teased her, turning his head down and grinning.
