Ignoring each other had been working okay. Actually, it was driving Kim crazy, but at least things didn't get any worse. Then Rafe had done... whatever it is he'd done, giving her a flower, and she didn't know what to think. She'd asked Coral for some help and came away from it thinking that Coral was even crazier than usual. She also really really hoped that the she was right. I didn't seem possible that she'd been missing something that big for this long, but that was so much better than the alternative, that Rafe wasn't interested and never would be and she'd just screwed up their friendship in some unfixable way.
For awhile, she kept trying to sneak glances at Rafe, trying to see how he looked at her when she wasn't looking. She never managed it though. How did you look at someone without looking at them? Trying to watch him out of the corner of her eye, she'd eventually walked herself right into a doorframe. That was when she realized she was being completely delusional. That random hope had gone to her head and made her crazy. She gave up and locked herself in her room. Kim curled up in bed to watch some cheesy romantic movies, but nothing on the screen really got through to her. She just couldn't stop her mind from wandering.
She almost didn't hear the knock on her door, or thought she imagined it. After a moment though she got up, turned off the TV, and went to the door. She put her hand on the knob, but didn't open the door. She couldn't do this, whatever it was. She rested her head against the cool smooth wood of the door. "What do you want?"
