Who: Greg and Dita What: A secret stash discovered When: Saturday Evening Where: Dita's House
Greg hadn't been so sure about spending Christmas with Dita's family, but it had gone pretty well. They seemed to like him, and they were all friendly (her grandmother possibly a little too friendly). It was nice to be around a bunch of people who were all comfortable with each other. It was a good distraction too, from all the chaos that had descended on the reincarnate community.
An even better distraction had been trying to fix up her parent's RV. It was nice that the transmission had decided to misbehave just before they got there. Fixing it game him something to do besides hang around the kitchen feeling useless and awkward. More than that though, it had given Kaylee something to work on, and she'd calmed down for the first time since they'd heard about Asher's, and Simon's, murder.
He hadn't known Asher all that well, but better than the rest of the reincarnated crew had, except maybe Max. He'd been a nice guy, and Greg felt bad about not spending more time with him, but it was all too weird, with the history between their headmates. Asher was so much like Simon. They were better matched than most reincarnates he'd met. It was hard to think of any way he could have made himself a target for CORE. If it was all just random though, well, that was even more troubling. He'd gone ahead and joined Camelot, and Dita helped with their training and did god knew what else. Who was to say that they wouldn't be the next targets?
Saturday they'd returned to Dita's house, somewhere he was feeling more and more comfortable, but neither of them had said anything about him going home yet. Maybe tomorrow. He wasn't in any hurry. Besides there was still stuff for him to do here. Over the holiday Dita had ended up with a new ceiling light for her guest bedroom, and fortunately she had a very handy boyfriend eager to help out. He'd offered to install it while she went off to check on Jake and Aaron.
It was when he went looking for the circuit breaker that things changed. He'd thought it would probably be in the garage, but there were wiring to the closet so he checked there first. There was a panel and the back of the nearly empty closet, but it wasn't what he expected. Opening it up he found a collection of guns, knives, books, and schematics. He wasn't sure what everything even was, but it was clear enough what he'd found: a soldier's secret stash. To need something like this, Dita had to be up to more than she'd ever let on. This was serious. This was real. How long had she been hiding this?
