Who: Nina Khol (narrative or OPEN)
What: Work work work. Three cases become four.
When: Tuesday Morning
Where: Agency HQ, Security Office
Arriving early Tuesday morning, Nina Kohl was less than thrilled to be at work. The files on her desk were getting more and more troubling. There were the usual misunderstandings and petty crimes to deal with, mostly delegated out to regional agents. There were some things that weren't so petty or usual though, and they were finding their way to the top. A string of bank robberies and four murders in the past two weeks. Two veteran Camelot members, one new recruit, and... a spy. That was the word from CORE anyway. Nina had trouble thinking of Joey as a spy. She remembered her as the sweet quiet woman from the records department. She was part of the Agency, and until they proved otherwise she at least was going to treat that case as the murder of one of their own.
She'd been on the scene of that one, and it was one of the more unsettling things she'd ever seen. Nina had a strong stomach. In fact, she'd been accused on a few occasions of being rather ghoulish, with her interest in all things homicide, combined with some of the darker and more melodramatic fiction that Jo had dabbled in. There were some things even she didn't want to see though. Unlike the pictures posted by Saxondale, the photos in the file were professional, sterile, taken by a detective on the scene. Looking at the file yet again though, she was still struck by the strong urge to close it and push it to the far edge of her desk, possibly with something very heavy set on top. It was one of the perils of their overactive imagination, sometimes it made objective analysis harder than it should have been.
The cases didn't have much in common, other than the fact that they'd made it to the desks of the director and deputy director. In the first they had suspects, but very little information and little to do. They had to argue not only with local authorities but Camelot as well, everyone with their own agenda. In the second they had more than a suspect, they had a full public confession. The problem there was finding Saxondale. That and keeping the local police from freaking out and launching their own hunt for a dangerous new serial killer. The third was a complete mystery. American bank robberies with a reincarnate connection. None of the cases seemed all that promising at the moment.
She was dreading following up on the next dead end when another file was delivered to her desk. The U.S. Cambridge, Massachusetts. A professor, former public official, long-time reincarnate, and high-level Camelot member executed in his office. She was going to need some more coffee.
