"Yes ma'am," David muttered, trying and probably failing to keep a straight face as she scolded him--though he would have hated himself if he had ever actually hurt anyone with his antics.
"You know, if there had ever been anything of mine, I would be glad to share it with you." He had no idea what that anything might have been, unless it was a river raft, or a marble collection, or--God forbid--a dead cat. "It would have been nice if some of that inherited fortune of Huck's had come with him, huh?"
He shrugged, cocking his head intently as she spoke of shuttles. "I wonder why nobody's come forward to claim something like that," he mused, though his mind was already darting ahead to subject of the new guy. "Have you collected him yet?" he teased. He wondered if she'd ever collected anyone but Thomas more than once. Not that it was any of his business. He just like collecting stories.
